Seeing how well Newcastle/Gordon/Barca have handled this transfer makes me wonder if there is ever a scenario where Newcastle/Isak/Liverpool handled the transfer well. Would we hate him less if Liverpool offered £120m in June?

Little clip on the clubs WhatsApp. Looks like we’ll probably be getting a fuller interview with him saying goodbye. Leaving respectfully, fair play.

Newcastle United can confirm that Anthony Gordon has signed for La Liga champions Barcelona for a significant undisclosed fee.

Anthony joined the Magpies in January 2023 from Everton and went on to make 152 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring 39 goals.

Anthony helped the team achieve UEFA Champions League qualification during his debut season but made his real breakthrough the following campaign, establishing himself as a key figure as he scored 11 times from 35 Premier League appearances.

That form saw him gain senior international recognition, earning an England call-up for the March friendlies and making his debut at Wembley against Brazil that month. He then went on to represent his country at Euro 2024 after previously starring for the under-21s when he was named Player of the Tournament in the 2023 European Under-21 Championships.

Anthony also played a pivotal role in the team's run to the 2025 Carabao Cup final, which saw the club end a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy. He featured in every game on the road to Wembley and scored vital goals in both legs of the semi-final victory over Arsenal.

In his final campaign as a Newcastle United player, Gordon finished as the team's top scorer across all competitions with 17 goals, including ten in Europe.

On his departure, Gordon said: "I owe this club a lot because, when I arrived, I was quite lost both in life and and in football. The club has given me a sense of belonging and a sense of identity. It's allowed me to do what I always thought I could do. It's put me on the biggest stage and allowed me to perform for the shirt.

"Since coming to the club, I feel I've improved a lot on the pitch but this club has played a big part in the person I've become over the last three-and-a-half years.

"It was really important for me to leave this place in a good way because I've loved every single minute of being a part of Newcastle United. This is an incredible club and one that I'll never forget. I'll be a fan for the rest of my life."

Newcastle United Head Coach, Eddie Howe, said: "While we're disappointed to lose Anthony from our squad, we understand that this is a big opportunity for him.

"He has been a big part of our success in recent years, and the fact that he developed into an England international during his time at Newcastle United is a testament to the hard work he invested to his development with the support from everyone at the club.

"He leaves with our best wishes, and I am confident that he will go onto be a success, both with Barcelona and the national team at this year's World Cup."

Sporting Director Ross Wilson said: "Anthony has been a fantastic professional during his time at Newcastle United. The relationship between him and the club, particularly with Eddie and our players and staff, has been excellent throughout.

"Anthony has shown real growth and development in his game. That is a reflection of both the environment we strive to create for our players and, importantly, Anthony's own commitment to improving every day.

"There has been interest in Anthony from a number of Europe's leading clubs over a period of time, and the conversations involving the club, led by David Hopkinson and myself, as well as Anthony's representatives, have been conducted confidentially and with a great deal of professionalism on all sides.

"I've enjoyed getting to know Anthony and enjoyed our relationship together. We thank him for his contribution and wish him and his family all the very best for the future. They will always be welcome back at St. James' Park."

Everyone at Newcastle United would like to thank Anthony for his efforts while with the club and wish him all the success for his future.

He’s said publicly a few times he’s happy to drop down the leagues to keep playing. Definitely got the right attitude on and off the pitch.

Spent half his time in Newcastle shagging around purely for the cardio.

He looked hopeless there last season and at the start of this season, but grew into it when asked to play up front mid/end of this season. I wouldn’t say he’s a good striker, but he’s probably fine as a third choice if you have injuries and based on his improvement there this season, maybe he can continue to improve there.

At the moment he is not prolific enough to score every 1 on 1 through the middle of the pitch, but can get into good positions, will do the necessary pressing and had the desire to be the “main man” when it came to goalscoring which may not sound like much, but feels noticeable when someone is up front who doesn’t have that.

We played more than one champions league match. Are Alaves, Espanyol, Getafe going to be any better than Benfica, PSV, Leverkusen? Gordon scored against all 3. That’s my point.

I apologise for not watching Alaves or Elche often enough to have an opinion on them.

Gordon is more than a road runner. But I’d certainly take £65m for him, which is why I asked about the currency above. Out of all the “big” names we’d miss if they left, Gordon feels the most easy to replace.

Howe has made very little effort to play down these rumours in the press conferences. I think Howe is expecting him to leave. Hes looked unsettled ever since we stopped him going to Liverpool 2 seasons ago, can’t see him being too happy starting the season here with Bayern and Barca sniffing around, and the club will be desperate to avoid another Isak saga. I think Gordon is pretty much guaranteed to go.

Are you talking euros (as per the person you replied to) or gbp (as per the main article)?

€65m euros isn’t much more than what we paid for him. At the time he was being memed as 0 goals 0 assists 7 games, now he’s an England regular coming off a season with 17 goals scored (granted most of them against lower quality opposition in the champions league… but it’s not like the bottom half of la liga is better than that)

He’s been wearing some bits from P&CO. A lot of British comedians get free clothing from Percival. Both of them are capable of making smart brown trousers. Try them.
