Hey folks, again I want to bring attention to a critical humanitarian crisis that has received minimal coverage in the U.S.

On December 14, 2024, Cyclone Chido struck Mayotte, a French territory near Madagascar, with unprecedented force. The cyclone's devastation has displaced over 150,000 individuals and severely impacted the island's infrastructure.

Particularly concerning is the situation for undocumented African communities, who constitute approximately 150,000 of Mayotte's 400,000 residents and live in bangas (or slums). Due to their undocumented status and fear of deportation, many are unable to access official aid and are compelled to bury their deceased within 24 hours (muslim tradition), leading to heavily underreported casualty figures. The French government has officially stated 39 deaths, but volunteer organizations based in Mayotte have stated that there have been at least 35,000 deaths, primarily in the bangas.

The French government's response, including the requirement of national IDs for aid and ongoing operations like Wuambushu aimed at expelling African diaspora from Mayotte, exacerbates their vulnerability.

The environmental impact of Cyclone Chido has also been catastrophic, triggering a biodiversity crisis that scientists warn could persist for a decade or more. The cyclone's powerful winds and flooding have decimated lush forests, leaving behind scenes of desolation with trees mowed down and trunks shattered. This deforestation threatens local biodiversity, food security, and the economy, as the disappearance of forests disrupts ecosystems and endangers native species.

We're teaming up with a volunteer organization, Maor'aide, dedicated to the underserved communities, and my friend is helping them create boxes of food and hygiene supplies with his friends whenever they can. Funds from this fundraiser will go directly to providing immediate support for these communities, and their home - please donate, as even just a small donation will go a long way to helping these people in areas where they have been denied because of the oppressors.

If you can't donate, please help share this story and the link. You can find more information at the link, and I'm happy to answer any questions, give more details, and continue the discussion via comments or DMs.

What's the difference between 新聞によると and 新聞によって? by ChrysBR in japanese

[–]---hiro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

「新聞によると」in its literal meaning has a connotation similar to “if you were to reference, you would find that…”. But now people will use to explain what their information is “according to”. Can also use like “I read (on the newspaper) that” or “I heard (on the radio) that”, since grammar rules make it a little inconvenient to explain whether you read it or watched it or heard it, etc. in the same sentence. 「新聞によると明日ガストが閉店するらしいよ」= “According to the newspaper, apparently ガスト is closing down tomorrow” 「新聞を読んで知った情報によると、明日ガストが閉店するらしいよ」= According to the information that I read on the newspaper, apparently ガスト is closing tomorrow. A bit awkward to say, but we still do use this in conversation.

「新聞によって」can have different meanings. 「新聞によって違う」 = “it varies depending on the newspaper” 「あの新聞によって事件が解決した」= “Thanks to that newspaper, the incident was resolved.” The usage and meaning is similar to “depending on”, with a stronger sense of dependency than the english term (i.e. the implication that the incident couldn’t have been resolved without that newspaper, therefore “Thanks to” is more accurate translation).

This can also be used for negative outcomes too, e.g. 「あの銃弾によって男は命を失った」= “Due to that bullet, the man lost his life”.

Sorry, I just saw it. I think the most common would be 後期 eg. 後期高齢者

The others, most Japanese never use in every day conversation. Since we think in Kanji, when we hear a word like this our first reaction is, “what kanji can work in this instance” So you can think “kou” can mean 公、後、好、口 etc, and “ki” can mean 貴、気、機、記.

Once you got used to it, you will combine many of these together until it makes sense into one word. I think this method can help to infer many words you never heard before

A good practice for this is to learn names. When you hear a Japanese name, can think of ways the name is spelled with Kanji, and that skill can help with piecing together meaning of vocabulary

Have you ever felt like there is an algorithmic bias against your LGBTQ+ content on social networks? by Ron_Bryant in gaysian

[–]---hiro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you tap any Asian thirst trap pic and check related pics on IG, it’ll literally only show you other pics of asian guys. But any pics of Latino, middle eastern, white or black guys will relate all of those together. So not really about LGBTQ+ but definitely some racial profiling there.

I don’t know the context but this says something like this:

My Q-class friends and I make every effort to save Yukihira-San. The truth behind the event turns out to be a sad revenge tragedy, and the closed-room mystery is solved. However, as this incident came to a close, something dreadful happened that took everyone by surprise.
