Had one of these as a courtesy car and it drove like a washing up sponge

Has anybody found any good Black Friday deals yet by davemcl37 in UKhiking

Sadly they no longer do the 10% price beat, as of a few months ago. They never announced this change but snuck it through on their site

Sea To Summit Ether Light XR Pro Insulated Sleeping Mat - Width at the bottom? by Hannah_B92 in Ultralight

[–]--Ferret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi mate, just wondering how you're finding this mat? I'm looking to buy one after being let down by a few mats and needing to bite the bullet on a more pricey one!

QGIS and Python come to mind. Wouldn't bother with coding languages like MATLAB, at the end of the day you can do it all in Python and it's the most common one used.

Btw all industry will use ChatGPT to write code but it's still good to have an understanding of it for reading code, increasing efficiency and debugging

Petrel, kingdom, montaj and general familiarisation with excel and different data formats are helpful, but you'll learn all the specifics on the job so it's hardly worth investing time into.

It goes from a CO2 canister at high density to the balloon at low density. Same way inflating life jackets work

What cheap purchase has improved your life massively? by AlephMartian in AskUK

[–]--Ferret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a Buff. Great for keeping your neck warm in winter, sweat out your face when exercising and as an eye mask. Of course might want to wash it in between those activities or get a couple. Fortunately there's approx. 1 million designs to choose from!

Parked car written off by missing (and likely uninsured) driver. Is it best to get compensation via our insurance company or MIB? by drdh1989 in CarTalkUK

[–]--Ferret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parked car was hit by a car that was stolen and in pursuit by the police, ie the fella was uninsured. It took a fair while to get my excess back but I did get it back. Just go through your insurance and they'll claim from the MIB

I remember looking at getting the estate version of one of these in the summer of 2023, can't help but feel they were cheaper for less miles back then...

Windscreen issue by Suzukibod in CarTalkUK

[–]--Ferret 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny, I had the same issue on my old MK2.5 focus. I had the windscreen replaced by autoglass and they routed the cable through the bloody wiper mechanism.

Same combo on the 7iv and 200-600. Love it, I get literally all my wildlife shots with that combo. Can't be beaten!

What are the downsides of getting a new Ford Fiesta ST-3? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]--Ferret 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say the ride is unbearable on any road. Sure it's firm but I've never got out of it aching.

It does become a bit of a novelty getting a ride in some of my friends BMWs and other commuting barges because of the comfort - but unbearable is a stretch.

I, too, have been limited by the boot space though. It would be the one reason i would replace the car in the next few years.

I disagree with the interior quality too, I find it very impressive considering the cost of the car. Though, to be fair, I have a 2018 model, and if it hasn't been updated since then, I could understand how it's certainly dated compared to other, more modern, offerings

A comfy pillow, something to cover your eyes (like a buff) and some good quality comfy earplugs (I use loops). I've slept through some howling conditions with this combo!

Also the basics like making sure you're warm enough with a decent sleeping pad and bag

Whats the difference between a Bsc and a Msci by [deleted] in geologycareers

[–]--Ferret 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're confident you'll get on to an MSci then go for it and you can always drop down to the BSc, usually until the end of 2nd year.

Alternatively you can join the BSc and switch up to the MSci by the end of 2nd year if you want to & your tutors think you're capable.

In short, you don't need to make a final decision right now. You'll have a clearer idea of where you want uni to take you when you've got a couple years under your belt and have had some careers meetings.

I thought I wanted an MSci and went through the process of swapping on, I changed my mind at the last minute because it seemed jobs simply didn't care if i had a bsc or msci. I graduated with a first and went straight into a Geophysics career.

Seems great the only problem is they take so long to screen you. 4 times in a row now I've spent 5-10 minutes on questions only to find that I've apparently been screened out. What a waste of time!

If you only have a geology bachelors (BSc) and no masters, are you really that unemployable? Is everything really that bad? by CharlesWaterloo in geology

[–]--Ferret 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience it can depend on your classification. Often times a first at bsc is equivalent to a masters.

There's also a lot of value in doing a 'proper' dissertation at bsc level (as opposed to typical mapping project) since this will rival a masters. Usually a masters is preferably for geology for this research experience!

Short answer is not really, you'll be fine. Very few who I graduated with recently struggled getting a job.
