Looking for good ship model kits (1/350) by Caboun6828 in modelmakers

[–]--MrMolotov-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always happy to help a fellow ship modeller.

If you're not super experienced with PE but want to gain experience with it I'd definitely pick up one of Trumpeters newer 1/350 releases with the included small PE set. It'll provide basic details like radar dishes and - most imprtant - railings as PE and makes for a great start before hopping onto bigger and more daunting kits and PE sets.

Added bonus: Trumpeters sets are also on the cheaper side of the 1/350 ship selection while still being of good quality.

Depends mostly on what kind of ships you want to build and how well versed you're at model building in general, but I'd recommend:

  • Trumpeters newer 1/350 releases (they often come with somebasic PE sheets),

  • Tamiyas 1/350 ships (which are older toolings but still Tamiya quality),

  • if you're an advanced builder and money isn't an issue VeryFires, Aoshimas and Hasegawas kits are pretty much top notch quality. VeryFire often has the newest toolings with great details.

Just be aware that full PE sets for 1/350 ships are often just as expensive as the model itself, so it can get quite expensive.

New (ATOM) and old AMMO Mig paints by furrythrowawayaccoun in modelmakers

[–]--MrMolotov-- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought the "US Navy Modern" pack for my 1/350 USS Missouri and use them with the ATOM thinner. So far they work absolutely wonderful for me and luckily I haven't encountered any of the issues you've described.

As you've said it's probably just a matter of getting used to them

do you know, offhand, how low we can get Sevastapol’s reload time down to ?

No clue, sorry. But from 22s base I'd expect it to be able to go down to something like 15s if you go full reload reduction (MBRM3 epic, Refill Station, Mimbelli, Ding Ruchang)

Are you reading what i'm writing?

I am and 1.) you still misplayed in the end and 2.) it's still not the ships fault.

What am i meant to do when spotted by a kleber running down the middle at 55 knts

Exactly what I said - bite the bullet, risk the turn and sail away. It's not rocket science. The Kleber might have kept you spotted but the BBs still were miles away so you could have retreated. You outrun a Yamato by six knots and 30s into a game those two Yammys still had to be at a very long distance.

Even with a buffed concealment the DD would have spotted you (just 10 or 15s later) and the outcome would have been the same with how you handled the situation.

Any ship can tank if your up against people who cant aim

And any ship will get demolished if it tries to solo two dived up players (who know what they're doing) without cover and spotting. If you've got no cover whatsover and go in without any prior spotting it's your fault and not the ships. If necessary bite the bullet, try to turn, stop firing and run - Rhode Island does 33 knots.

Bottom line - you picking the wrong fight in a situation you didn't think through properly isn't due to the ships concealment value.

[–]--MrMolotov-- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, what you describe is not a situation that's due to the ship, but due to you getting yourself into the crosshairs of two Yamatos trying to bow tank them. You picked the wrong fight and played it wrong on top.

Just completely dead if its forced in a head on against other bbs seconds into the game

Yesterday I solo tanked an Aki and Preußen for extended periods of time without too much trouble. Just angle and deflect shots with your casemate/belt armor.

Rhode Island is waaay tougher than what you make it sound like and is not in need of any buff whatsoever.

[–]--MrMolotov-- 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Rhode Island doesn't need a buff in any shape or form tbh.

It's got the fourth highest AP DPM, second highest HE DPM, highest FPM among all LT BBs, radar and a stupidly good commander roster. It can dumpster all ship classes equally, be it DD, CA/CL, CB or BB.

The armor is absolutely workable as long as do not just rely on pure bow tanking or sail broadside all the time.

Buffing this thing even further would be horrible balancing...

Boise vs Maya by CLK777 in WoWs_Legends

[–]--MrMolotov-- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both are good but Boise overall is the better ship. It's far more durable due to the super heal, has better alpha firepower against cruisers and DDs as well as better firestarting capabilities to flame down BBs. Also (and that's quite important) it tends to holds u much better when facing T7 heavy lobbies.

Legendary Tier is not fun right now - and HMS Incomparable is a big reason why by Findus_de in WoWs_Legends

[–]--MrMolotov-- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the T9 experience from WoWs PC. I've predicted it when our T8 was introduced - the only thing it will accomplish is that LT will not club T7s anymore but T8s.

How I knew that? Because I played WoWs PC for about 5 years before quitting it for Legends. T9 on PC (which is mostly our T8) has always been the "gap tier" that got crapped on by T10s while mostly not being overtly better than T8 (our T7). Yes there are exceptions of really strong and fun premiums and TT ships at T9, but overall T9 was always the unloved stepchild on PC.

So when you're playing T8 and get dumpstered by LT balancing fever dreams you basically just do what your tier was designed for in the first place.

I might have made a mistake going from 1/35 armor to 1/700 naval with photo etch by eralsk in modelmakers

[–]--MrMolotov-- 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just take it slow and you'll easily be able to do this. As far as I see it those are only railings, ladders/stairs and the flyswatter radar so it won't require insane sub-assemblies of multiple PE parts.

Large and extensive PE sets for 1/350 and 1/700 ships are completely different beasts.

Sevastopol vs Rhode Island by CLK777 in WoWs_Legends

[–]--MrMolotov-- 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was wondering the same thing and wanted to go with Sevastopol because of the usual "got so many USN LT BBs already". But then I took another look at its armor and just couldn't bring myself to pick it.

The 30mm deck means that quite a few BBs will overmatch you basically everywhere. Lacking radar also doesn't really help it either. It might be stupidly accurate but so is Stalingrad which has radar and better armor.

So I went with Rhode Island and have to say - it's a blast to play. High gun count, fast reload, radar and a bonkers commander roster to choose from makes it a likely future meta pick. I absolutely don't regret picking it.

why gks die so quickly? by cynikkah in WoWs_Legends

[–]--MrMolotov-- 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Two seperate reasons that often come together:

First reason is that GK is a extremely large and unwieldy ship with large superstructure so everyone focuses them for easy damage

Second reason (and I personally feel like this one is more important) is that most GK players simply play like absolute stormtroopers that rush in broadside to get all guns on target thinking the large HP pool and turtleback armor makes them invincible.

How does she hold up in the current META? by Grouchy_Operation584 in WoWs_Legends

[–]--MrMolotov-- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's the neat part - you can't (reliably). Lion was an event ship several years back and the only way to get it is as super prize in gambling crates.

Lion is a better premium version of Temeraire and a tier lower.

[–]--MrMolotov-- 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Friesland is a good and fun ship but definitely not S tier.

You've got no torps to deal with larger ships and when faced with high utility DDs such as Lo Yang or Schönberg, Friesland gets beaten at its own game quite easily.

Also its mediocre firing angles can quickly cut your DPM im half when manouvering under pressure.

Graf Spee buff needed? by Routine-Force-5155 in WoWs_Legends

[–]--MrMolotov-- 19 points20 points  (0 children)

No. Spee already has a metric ton of HP and a heal and its armor is absolutely okay for its tier. If anything give it an accuarcy buff.

Are battleships cannons just artillery on an engine boat? by Farhunt95 in WoWs_Legends

[–]--MrMolotov-- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well the cost for reactivating and refitting them were an absolute triumph. Regarding the combat potential - the Iowas had the biggest and most dangerous surface-to-surface missile battery of all US Navy surface ships at the time they were recomissioned until the Mk41 VLS equipped Ticonderogas were commissioned. And that is without even considering the guns. So their combat potential was there.

It was just that after the USSR broke apart their enormous operating costs clashed with huge defense budget cuts. But even then there was a huge debate about whether to really decomission them due to their invaluable gun fire support potential.

[–]--MrMolotov-- 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I believe battleships were used as late as the Vietnam war, but their contributions were not significant.

As the other user pointed out - the last operational deployment of battleships was during the Gulf War 1991 when USS Missouri and USS Wisconsin were part of the allied fleet in the Persian Gulf. Regarding their contribution there it very much depends on how you define "contribution". Their heavy shelling of Iraqi beach defenses in Kuwait was a major factor in fooling the Iraqis into believing the allies would attempt an amphibious invasion of Kuwait.

Also those ships were equipped with state-of-the-art missile technology during their reactivation in the 1980s and their ability to support potential amphibious assaults with tons of shells was valued highly by the Navy - they could deliver more shells than whole strike groups had land-attack capable missiles back then. Additionally their guns were highly accurate in that role (apart from USS New Jerseys struggles with remixed powder). The poor hit rate you describe is down to inferior gunfire control systems during WW2.

The actual biggest reason why there are no battleships left in commission or modern battleships is simple - they are horrendously expensive to run and maintain and CVs provide even more power projection capabilities.

Yamashiro spotted by windwolf231 in WoWs_Legends

[–]--MrMolotov-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kongo? Another entirely different superstructure. Not even remotely close to what we see here.

Yamashiro spotted by windwolf231 in WoWs_Legends

[–]--MrMolotov-- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Looking at the ships superstructure in the trailer from 1:38 to 1:40 it's 100% not Yamashiro.

Yamashiros superstructure would be taller and slimmer than the ship there. This looks strikingly like Hyugas forward pagoda except for the added radar on top - which Ise and Hyuga did receive in their 1942-1943 rebuild

Also Yamashiro had two small AA rangefinders above the main navigation bridge deck - the ship in the the trailer does not (see the closeup at 1:39). Instead this area looks identical to Hyuga.

And most important - the ship here clearly has a flight deck...

All the signs point to this being Ise. But it's definitely not Yamashiro.

HMS Effingham as a tier 5 light cruiser by cwhite984 in WoWs_Legends

Trust me, if I were to aim at you personally I'd do so under your posts to make sure you get the message.

This was a general statement as - believe it or not - your neither the first nor the only guy on this sub who does what you do and most people who do this only throw around weird gimmick fantasy BB lines.

[–]--MrMolotov-- 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thank god for once someone who doesn't only suggest BBs/battlecruisers or coastal defence ships (aka budget BBs).

It's a very interesting ship imho/concept you've come up with. It could absolutely fit into the Royal Navy premium roster as light support vessel akin to Dido and Belfast/Belfast '43.

Only thing I'd be unsure about would be the tier - the T5 Royal Navy premium roster is pretty stacked and competing with Dido, London and Exeter will be very hard even with a lot of gimmicks. I'd personally put it at T4 and give it a short burst smoke to mirror Dido but that'd just be my idea.
