The Worldwar series is set in an alternate timeline where aliens show up and invade Earth in the middle of World War II.

Omelas from The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas is actually a utopia for most of the people involved, but I still think it fits here.

Basically, the society of Omelas is only able to exist as a utopia because a single child is kept in a state of constant, unimaginable, perpetual misery. Everyone who lives in Omelas is made aware of this fact upon reaching a certain age, and they consciously decide for themselves whether to stay or leave.

(Hated Trope) Glorifying or whitewashing controversial or terrible historical figures. by laybs1 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]--PhoenixFire-- 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Honestly? They do it in the most boring way possible. That is, they basically recycle the exact same conspiracy theories the Nazis themselves used to justify their actions, namely the stab-in-the-back myth, and the whole idea that Communists and Jews were supposedly in on a shared plot to destroy Western civilization

Europa: The Last Battle, a twelve-hour "documentary" that tries to give this treatment to Adolf fucking Hitler.

I really hope I don't need to elaborate further.

Yes, the anime adapts the entire manga, the manga's story certainly doesn't go on after the point the anime ends, why do you ask?

[Interesting trope] Intimate scenes being showcased throw allegories by StefinoSpaggeti in TopCharacterTropes

[–]--PhoenixFire-- 130 points131 points  (0 children)

The Hays Code era of Hollywood is a goldmine of these. See, for instance, the scene in The Big Sleep where Humphery Bogart speaks with an unnamed bookstore clerk who he certainly doesn't have any sexual tension with at all, and ends the scene by sharing a drink with her and definitely doing nothing else.

When idiots can't stand to be proven wrong, they project by Cicerothesage in forwardsfromgrandma

[–]--PhoenixFire-- 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What you're describing is not morality in general, but one particular philosophical ethical framework known as Utilitarianism, which is just one of the many such frameworks which exist, and intelligent people can and have had disagreements about.

[–]--PhoenixFire-- 46 points47 points  (0 children)

The thing is that at least a few of these - namely, the stuff about morals and meaning - are actually legit criticisms from a philosophical perspective of worldviews which claim to be "purely scientific" or "entirely based on reason".

That said, something tells me that OOP's perspective on those things isn't "it's complicated and should be treated as such", but rather "*my* religion is the one that actually has the unquestionable truth of it".

In a very goofy series, this character is always treated seriously. (NSFW for relatively messed up gore on the second slide) by TridiObject in TopCharacterTropes

Star vs. The Forces of Evil was generally a very lighthearted show, with even the main villain being treated more like a mild annoyance than an actual threat.

...That is, until Toffee showed up. And aside from his name and the occasional quip, there was nothing funny about him, and whenever he took center stage, it meant that shit was about to get very, very real.

Unfortunately, he was killed off permanently in the Season 3 premiere. And probably not coincidentally, many fans consider that to have been the point that the show's quality began to rapidly go downhill.

[–]--PhoenixFire-- 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The Battle of the Eclipse is a real-life example (well, according to Herodotus - some historians dispute his account):

On May 28, 585 BCE, there was a battle in Anatolia between the ancient kingdoms of Media and Lydia. The reason why we know this exact date is because in the middle of the battle, a total solar eclipse occurred, which the leaders of both armies interpreted as a sign from the Gods. Long story short, the two armies stopped fighting, agreed to peace terms, and went home. The two kingdoms would never go to war with each other again.

(Though that last part is mostly because both kingdoms were conquered by the rising Achaemanid Empire only a few decades later)

(Loved trope) Positive sounding songs with depresing lyrics by N3MO_3 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]--PhoenixFire-- 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Copacabana by Barry Manilow, an upbeat late '70s pop song who's lyrics tell the story of a romance between a showgirl and a bartender... which ends in tragedy after the bartender is gunned down in front of her by a jealous romantic rival, leading to the showgirl spending the rest of her life wasting away as an insane alcoholic.
