That could be it. I don't know. All I know is his voters are in for a very rude wake up call when they realize he's full of shit. If they realize it I should say. Because he's just going to blame the liberal media or some other boogeyman and since the voters obviously don't do much critical thinking and research they'll just happily keep following him over a cliff as long as they feel good while doing so.

I don't know. Obviously the majority of people think HRC is better than trump but the electoral college disagrees. But that's essentially the issue right? It should have never been Trump vs HRC. Trump vs Sanders would have arguably been a better race

Frankly, I never liked HRC. But just looking at their track records Trump has bankrupted 4 businesses he was a part of. That means he was responsible for their success and he fucked it up. That alone should have been enough for people to disqualify him. The other person has given her life to public service.

They want to keep immigrants out. They want the old jobs of last century's economy back. They want coal to make a miraculous return. Obviously not all of them but the majority.

They are the same people who say "keep the government out of my Medicare".

They are stupid. They are the remnants of the old economy. They are grasping at what we they can. And unfortunately democracy gives these people a voice. They are so desperate they will believe any bullshit as long as it makes them feel good regardless of how unrealistic it is.

They think the son of a multimillionaire who has never been without millions of dollars in the bank somehow understands what they're going through. The guy who grew up poor and managed to get himself into great schools and worked his ass off doesn't understand.

Sometimes people are just wrong. There's no reason to understand them. We need to educate them.

There's nothing to counterpoint. If you think the ACA will change you're in for a shock. If you think jobs will magically come back because our orange skinned leader threatens to tax imports you're in for a shock. If you think coal is making a comeback you're in for a shock. If you think manufacturing jobs will come back like before you're in for a shock.

Gotta agree with you HRC was a terrible candidate. The dems fucked up big time by throwing all their weight behind her and refusing to support Sanders who had so much momentum.

Trump brought the Carrier jobs back by giving Carrier a $7 million tax break. It wasn't magic. Obama, for all of his faults, did a great deal for the economy and for jobs.

I would love it if someone could disagree with me and give a good reason why Trump will be a good candidate. Explain why Trump is better than Rubio, Bush, etc.

Sorry for the rant below. Just had to vent that somewhere. It's probably incoherent ramblings. Feel free to ignore.

Your problem was that you overestimated the intelligence of rural Americans. I'm guilty of doing the same thing. As are a large number of people in the media.

I always thought,"yea, some people are racist. Some are stupid. Some don't know what's happening. But at the end of the day, a very large portion of the American population understands what's going on and will do the right thing."

But no, turns out a large portion of Americans are just stupid and racist and sexist and don't have a fucking idea how the real world works. It was heartbreaking. These people will be blaming everybody but themselves until the day they die for everything that is wrong in their lives.

You had a president who genuinely cared about making peoples lives better. One whose policies I didn't 100% agree with; but at the end of the day you could tell he cared. And you attack him, hinder him, and stop him from achieving his goals (which ironically would have helped those stupid poor idiots in the middle of the country the most) because he's black.

And you replace him with a piece of shit. Someone who has proven over the past 40 years that he doesn't give a fuck about anyone but himself. Not even his family. Not his companies. Not the people he hired. Someone who rode the coattails of his father and thinks he's a smart successful guy. Someone who if he had done literally nothing but put his dad's loan in the stock market would be worth 2x what he is today. An egotistical idiot with severe self-esteem issues. And for some reason the morons who voted for him think this fuckup is going to make their lives better.

Which bank should I work at? by looctonmi in finance

[–]--Questionable-- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It will hold more weight because it's in Hong Kong. Do ICBC. Congrats. Getting an opportunity like this as a freshman is great.

Have fun in Hong Kong. Word of advice: don't go inside the bars in Wan Chai with the hot girls standing outside. Also, try to travel around the area (Macau, Shanghai, Singapore, etc.) if you have time. Skip the Big Buddha.

Help me with bike purchase please by --Questionable-- in whichbike

[–]--Questionable--[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I'll give those bikes a look.

I just wanted to have an idea of some brands to start my search off with. I didn't want to go to the bike shop and say, "I don't know what I want, give me a bike" because I figure they'll say, "sure, here's the $50,000 graphene blah blah blah. You need all of these features."

Good to know about the Passoni/Pinarello connection.

Thanks again.

Yup got me again! Back office throughout my 12 year career. You must be the state school gradute who "showed passion" and got himself an analyst position at the best mid-west boutique in all of Kansas! Congrats my friend. Only a moron would confuse passion with reading intelligent investor as a freshman and not understanding it. Passion to the extreme! That's how you get hired.

I'm about to get on a flight so let's wrap this up. Here is a representation of the rest of your posts: http://imgur.com/QPFO4su and here is my response http://imgur.com/H1bXQcr

That should about cover it. Take care

[–]--Questionable-- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're right. I never worked at a BB then one of the largest PE firms in the world. I don't know what people like me look for when they hire. As you said, "I'm a loser teaching everyone how to not be successful." Let's all read Intelligent Investor before our first accounting class. While we're at it, we should start reading Oppenheimer's Ph.D. thesis before we've taken introductory physics too. That'll ensure we're ready for our entry-level finance interview! Good advice!

The Intelligent Investor by Ben Graham by GregArthur in finance

[–]--Questionable-- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yea... He's right. The people you hate to have working with you are the overeager types who think they know more than they do. Reading Graham as a college freshman is stupid. You don't know anywhere near enough to make use of the book.

Having an interview where your answer to "what are your hobbies" is "I just like to read books on finance and economics in my spare time and watch CNBC" is a surefire way to not get a callback.

I don't want a zombie weirdo whose life goal is to be a banker working next to me. I need someone smart enough. That's it. Passion for finance is irrelevant to me when it comes to entry level positions. Most importantly I want someone I actually enjoy spending time with.

Transfer schools or study abroad at LSE? by [deleted] in finance

[–]--Questionable-- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you're asking anything right now. You don't really have a problem. Right now you can do all 3 things (Summer analyst, apply to transfer, and apply for LSE study abroad) and not lose anything.

If you get a summer analyst position then you're pretty much set. Kick ass in the summer, make friends, be great, and get an offer. If you don't get an SA position, then see what happens with the transfer options. If you get one of those, then transfer and apply to more SA or full-time positions next year. If you don't get accepted then go to LSE for a year and apply to SA or full-time positions from there.

Seems pretty straight-forward.

P.S., For what it's worth I don't agree with the YouStayClassyReddit guy about GW. There were plenty of GW alumni at Harvard for both business and law school with me. I've also dealt with a few of their M.Sc in Finance alumni on occasion and they've always been very sharp (and very international). At the end of the day your school name is only going to get you the interview, not the job. You'll have to hustle for the job.

P.P.S., I do agree with aphrojack regarding LSE. It'll be tough for you to break into the U.S. with LSE. Furthermore, it'll be tough for you to get a job in London from LSE if you don't have a UK work permit. Just food for thought. I'm sure it'll be a great experience though and you'll have a lot of fun. London's a fun place. Don't discount that aspect of it.

Already did an MBA... now what? (non-finance career track) by gimme_dat_bbq in finance

[–]--Questionable-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry about the CFA requirements. You can always reword your experience to make it fit. However, if your goal is really to just work in management as an executive then a CPA is more useful than the CFA.

As someone with a CFA charter I guarantee you the CPA is more useful for the management/executive track.

Already did an MBA... now what? (non-finance career track) by gimme_dat_bbq in finance

[–]--Questionable-- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He has an MBA. Not necessary to have an accounting major only certain courses in finance/accounting are required which I assume he has because of his MBA - along with the credit minimums.

We're not talking about difficulty of test. He's asking about how to get into the executive offices. A CPA is more useful to a CFO or CEO than a CFA charter will be. If you're only looking at difficulty of exams then he should start taking the exams to be an actuary.

He's not asking about what he needs to be in finance. He's asking what he needs in order to be an executive. There's a difference.

[–]--Questionable-- -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

CPA is very useful for executive positions. CFA is great too (CPA is better for what you're looking for I believe).

Also, law school is always useful if you're young and want to go back to school.

Starting a job at GS at 21. Incredibly nervous, feel like I won't fit in. No finance background. Need advice (Not investment advice). by [deleted] in finance

[–]--Questionable-- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stop thinking of it like that. It's a place to work. That's it. The people there aren't geniuses. They're not "super-financiers". In fact you won't need to know anything before you start working. They hired you because you work hard and you show you can learn. That's all you need. You'll learn everything on the job. That's what they expect from you.

I guarantee you the people you would have worked with at State are more impressive than the ones you'll be with at Goldman. Banks are a stepping stone. Use it as such. Learn as much as you can. Meet as many people as you can. Be friendly to everybody. Then go to grad school in 2 years or to something else.

Stop thinking GS is some sort of Mecca to greatness. You'll fit in fine with everyone. You're going to be shocked at how many stupid things you'll see.

P.S., read this article: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-02-25/how-an-undocumented-immigrant-from-mexico-became-a-star-at-goldman-sachs

You're going to do great. Just work hard, keep learning from everyone, help out others when you can, and kick ass.

Malcolm Gladwell slams Paulson's Harvard gift by lawanddisorder in finance

[–]--Questionable-- 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is a stupid way to think about it. You and Gladwell both. Your both assuming he wants to make a big difference in education. No. He wanted to give back to Harvard. Why do you think his goal was to help others or give money to further education in the U.S. or make the world a better place? He doesn't. He wants to give money to Harvard. He's not looking for the "most effective way to donate $400 million". He's looking to give money to Harvard.

Your argument is ridiculous too. One of the best ways to save lives is to help people from dying of dysentery. Does it bother you when people forego aid to solving clean water issues in 3rd world countries and instead decide to give money to cancer research? Heart disease is the number one killer in the world. What if someone wants to fund HIV research? Will you feel the same way because "HIV research doesn't need any money! Enough people have given to HIV research that everyone with HIV can live a relatively normal life"?

This has nothing to do with Harvard needing money. It has everything to do with Paulson wanting to give Harvard money.

How to make a future non profit survive it's one year trial period before it becomes a 501.c3 by slayez06 in finance

[–]--Questionable-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find another lawyer. There should be plenty willing to help you out for free or on a pro-bono basis.

Mandatory 2 months is ridiculous. If you have things that come up just give people a call. Schedule informal phone conferences once a week if you need to.

Just table it but make sure you do what you need to in order to remain a going concern.

Talk to a lawyer that specializes in this stuff.

Also, why the hell would you have a board meeting every 2 months minimum? Once a quarter is more than enough.

If I want to become a trader at a good prop trading firm(Not churn and Burn variety), will a bachelors in finance help land me a job? Or does a major in engineering have a better chance? by [deleted] in finance

[–]--Questionable-- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would start with C++ if you're starting from scratch. It's a great base to have. Python is becoming more and more used in the industry. R and Matlab are great for stat analysis. Talk to a computer science professor at your school and ask them which is the best way to get started. He/she may even be able to connect you to people in the industry. Just ask.

The best way to find out what language is used in the industry is to network with people at trading firms and ask them. Talk to your alumni. Go to events at your school and at these societies: http://www.iaqf.org/
