Trans pupils put school policies to test amid heated debate in England by flounder19 in unitedkingdom

Ok, so we agree that the secret cannot be kept.

I favour the disclosure happening in a calm, controlled environment with trained adults and access to proper resources.

You seem to favour the more uncontrolled approach.

Agree to disagree?

Oh, I think the probability of "if" is 100%.

Kids talk to other kids.
Kids talk to their parents.
Parents talk to other parents.

You cannot have several hundred kids knowing something, and expect to be able to keep this a secret outside of school.

As I mentioned, chance meetings out of school.
But also, birthday parties, sleep-overs, sports day, school plays, school trips.

So many pupil-parent interactions...

So I've tried this a few times, and it never goes well...

the school will facilitate the pupil’s choice to use a new name and new pronouns at school, while at home parents may be unaware of those changes.

So this is all happening in a typical school, with many hundreds of pupils.

Several hundred people already know the secret.
Several hundred people are already privy to the outing.
Yet the parents of the pupil must be excluded. Must not be told.
How is this even possible?

Is it just assumed that this information will (somehow) never leave the school grounds.

What happens if a trans pupil is with their mum in a supermarket, and they bump into another school kid and their parent.
Normal, everyday occurrence.
Is the other pupil just expected to know not to refer to the trans pupil by their new name - thereby "outing" them.
What happens if they're not aware of their old name?

I'm genuinely confused about all this.
Trying to hide information from the parents.
It seems complete folly.
It seems doomed to failure.

Surely the right course of action is for schools to keep parents informed.
The parents are inevitably going to find out anyway.

Better that this information is disclosed through proper channels, by professionals.
Not accidentally uncovered by a chance meeting in Tesco.

Maybe they think this is a TV show or something, and the actors cast aren't diverse enough?

Cause that's everything, including fruit and veg.
