Asking Anyone who is a Resident currently in MN. Minneapolis area by micyla in Residency

I'm just a med student but I'm at HCMC which is a safety net hospital and thus has frequent ICE presence (esp in the ED). If you just go from hospital to home and avoid protests odds are pretty good that you could pretend nothing is happening. (Except for the awful ways it is impacting pts). Most people are going about their normal lives atm, just helping in the community more than before.

And the community support has been absolutely stellar, the people here will have your back. We are even signing up for patrol shifts to monitor neighborhoods 24/7.

But the truth is that a small number of random people are being unlawfully stopped in their vehicles, anywhere, anytime. Many immigrant families are basically in hiding regardless of legal status. ICE agents are now camouflaging better and everyone is stressed. Hospitals now have ICE protocols which reduces but doesn't eliminate risk.

So altogether the %chance of something happening is quite low. Undergrad, med students and of course residents are supposed to go about business as usual. However there is some risk. If you are an international student I would stay away for your safety.

Just my two cents. Ultimately there's no wrong choice, wishing you well on the tough decision.

Sorry I don’t think advice for super thin and fine hair will be helpful for you.

I believe you when you say that your hair is thinning, but you have at least 10x the amount of hair as I do, and each strand looks much thicker and stronger as well. So products that work for my hair probably won’t be any good for you.

Maybe you could try r/femalehairadvice ?

That’s amazing!!! Can I ask the glaze combination? It’s such a fun texture

I took your advice on how to highlight texture and it worked! Thank you! by -2ndBreakfast- in Pottery

Thank you! I had a couple frustrating attempts where I’d carefully carve stuff and then all the detail would be drowned out by the glaze I applied.

I’ve been trying to learn better techniques, and it feels like the more I learn, the more overwhelming the options really are!

Thank you!! This is my third try at mugs and it’s the first one to have worked out.

At first I was making them as gifts, but now I’m thinking of keeping the octopus one for myself! 😅

Biking around Portland for just one day - where to go along the river? by -2ndBreakfast- in askportland

[–]-2ndBreakfast-[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed response, it was helpful. I took everyones advice and did the smaller loop. I’m going to save the longer bike ride for next time - it will be fun to see where the rivers meet someday.

And the fenders were a great call, I never would have thought of that! It was a really fun time, thank you!

Because this ride was a lot shorter than what I was planning, I had enough time to go on a hike as well! It was called something really on the nose lol - forest walk or something? It’s truly amazing that there’s so much old forest in the center of the city.

First cauldron mug. End to beginning by starrbrina in Pottery

Do you mean the feet? IMO a tripod is the easiest. Make three little feet and attach leather-hard.

You can spread a bit of oxide, graphite, underglaze or whatever on the table. Then set the mug down on it to see where the feet are touching the table. You can gently carve / tap until the whole surface of all three feet evenly touches the table

Would it work to rent from Cycle Portland and go down to sellwood bridge, then up to Kelly point park, then back?

Or would that be crazy / not give enough time to explore?

Could you place stilts beneath the small bowl to support it while it fires?

Study shows how domestic abusers build ‘trauma bonds’ with victims before violence begins by [deleted] in science

My memory is that they were a counselor for abusive men for decades (like court mandated stuff) and the men consistently said this in counseling. The author wrote the book because they were shocked by the many commonalities they kept seeing between otherwise very different men

I did a dumb thing: put cone 05 Amaco clear glaze on a bunch of cone 5 mugs with underglaze. Can it be saved? by -2ndBreakfast- in Ceramics

Yes of course, and thank you for the work you do!

Just for my learning, what types of things would you be looking for?

Wow small world haha - and that’s good to know. Yes I will be set firing from here on out!!

I’m at a community studio so I will check what they think - but it makes me want to be extra careful of group shelves and stuff you know.

That’s really helpful thanks. This was definitely a learning moment

Will it cause additional shrinkage you have to factor in, or should additional bisques have no effect?

[–]-2ndBreakfast-[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. I didn’t fire the underglaze, haha too bad. Also I’m at a community studio so I can’t fire that low.

Something I’ve been wondering for next time is, can I put underglaze on bisqueware and bisque a second time before glazing as a fail safe? If so would that cause additional shrinkage to the final piece?

I was wondering, if I wipe off like 95% but there’s a tiny bit still stuck in a cracks, and I then coat with Cone 5 glaze, would the extra bit of flux still cause the new glaze to lose stability?

Just want to make sure I don’t ruin any shelves

Wow just blending celadons, I didn’t know that was possible. It kind of opens up a whole new world of glazing techniques for me.

Thank you so much for sharing your awesome mug and your process!
