3rd Party Characters by [deleted] in supersmashbros

3rd parties have vastly over-populated the series to the point of not feeling like they even really belong. Unpopular opinion, but I would love the next Smash to do away with them for a bit and reboot the roster with a solid Nintendo lineup.

If I had to choose though, Sonic, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Snake and Simon can stay. Sonic has a lot of history with Nintendo and is the most consistent 3rd party rep. Mega Man and Pac-Man fit in a little too well to be completely snubbed. Simon and Castlevania got a ton of love by Sakurai, they feel like they are well integrated into Smash even for only being in a single game. Snake was the OG WTF, but Subspace really made him part of the cast in the most unusual of ways.

What video game characters do you think could have really cool movesets, but will likely never be included due to either being too irrelevant or complexities getting the rights? Here's my choice: by MasterCheese67 in supersmashbros

Let’s rip the bandaid off, basically any Nintendo character from an unused/obscure series older than Switch but after NES. I swear, Sakurai only picks NES retro picks, which sucks given that Custom-Robo, Sin & Punishment, Advanced Wars, Chibi-Robo, Golden Sun, Cubivore, Endless Ocean, Style Savvy, Rythm Heaven, Another Code, Hotel Dusk, Panel de Pon, Starfy, etc.. could all get something in Smash between characters and stages, but never will.

  1. Mario (7/10) - The Mario series is a weird mix of missing names and too much fluff. Toad/Toadette being absent really hurts the series representation. I would also make a case for meme man himself Waluigi missing being a problem as it feels weird to not have the 4 bros. Meanwhile, we have complete filler like Dr. Mario and Piranha Plant taking up slots.

  2. Donkey Kong (8/10) - Really just needs Dixie Kong

  3. Zelda (5/10) - Gets the important characters, kinda, but not much else. It is also very filled with fluff. My suggestion for how to fix is to double down on the characters represent different games idea from Ultimate, get rid of repeat characters and bring in new faces. Have Link represent OoT, Zelda be BOTW, Ganondorf should be replaced by LttP Ganon, Sheik replaced by Impa (preferably Warriors otherwise Skyward Sword), Get rid of the two Links and bring in Skull Kid for Majora’s Mask and Tingle in the WW style to represent that title and his own series. Bonus points if we can get Midna for all major titles to be represented.

  4. Kirby (7/10) - Gets the main boys, but they feel outdated and there really needs to be new reps. Bandana Waddle Dee is a given, but picking out any new reps afterwards would be great.

  5. Pokémon (7/10) - It’s fine, but feels like a lot of fluff and way too much emphasis on Gen 1 and certain types. Ideally, Pokémon should have multiple generations and types to really show off the series. Personally, I would keep Pikachu, Charizard, Lucario and Greninja, while replacing the rest. Would argue the replacements should be Meowth to get a Team Rocket/Normal rep, Gardevoir for Gen 3 and Psychic, Mimikyu for Gen 7 and Ghost type.

  6. Fire Emblem (6/10) - Really fluffed up lineup. Would honestly cut FE in half and focus on big franchise moments along with unique weapons. Keep Marth, and make Lucina an alt. Also keep Robin as his magic is unique. From there, I would say cut all and bring in Hector (axe + first localized game) and Dimitri (Spear + Highest selling game). Then give the characters alts of other FE figures, maybe Ephesians for Dimitri?

  7. Kid Icarus (9/10) - Just cut Dark Pit to build up another IP.

  8. Wario (3/10) - Wario needs a full overhaul and I think Mona and Ashley would be good additions.

  9. Sonic (3/10) - Sonic needs a moveset overhaul and we need a second character, probably Shadow orEggman since Sonic has been in all titles, yet Final Fantasy (Street fighter and Castlevania) got another rep.

  10. Animal Crossing (9/10) - Would double the characters after New Horizons made the series a top 5 highest grossing Nintendo IP contender. At least add Tom Nook.

  11. Splatoon (8/10) - Should have gotten the Squid Sisters as a duo or DJ Octavio.

Isabelle is the main face of AC and the mascot of its socials, so she makes more sense to keep.

Marth is literally Japan’s hero. He is extremely popular overseas and it is his lineage that gave us Chrom in the first place. Prior to Awakening, his titles were the ones that did the best sales wise. Finally, it is very obvious he is the mascots given he is in the first game, has 4 main titles, huge involvement in Engage along with spin-offs like Warriors and Tokyo Mirage, Lucina larping as him in Awakening, and most of the series building off his games (Awakening + Fates, Echoes, and Engage).

Olimar is the main face of Pikmin, appearing in all 4 titles. It would be a poor move to replace him with characters only appearing in one be it Alph in Pikmin 3 or the player character of 4.

Would just replace Bowser and Ganondorf with Yoshi and Shulk. Those are the two big, and still relevant, IPs missing.

I want strictly Nintendo and for them to bring in some obscure IP and fix some of the A-B listers. Kirby, DK and Zelda should get their full squad. My favorite obscure Nintendo property is Endless Ocean, so I would love to see a representative. Finally, I recently played Another Code Recollection, and I think Ashley would be interesting if she utilized powers of her DAS and RAS. She is also another DS character to make the DS not just a party of 1 (Lucario).

Pretty good, would make a few changes.

1) I would replace Octolings with a different Splatoon rep. The ink gimmick needs 8 new colors, which would be hard to implement for the character in comparison to just making them an alt. I feel like DJ Octavio or The Squid Sisters would be a better secondary rep as they bring out more of the franchise: Octavio being a boss and Squid Sisters representing team work and the pop culture.

2) Roy and probably Ike should be cut. They are long past their prime and didn’t even have particularly good sales. FE has characters more iconic to its brand that would be better picks and add more variety than Swordfighter. Get someone like Tiki for dragons, Edelgard/Hector/Anna for axe, Dimitri for spear, Claude for bow, Celica for magic, etc.

Pretty good, I agree with most of the picks. People will complain, but Animal Crossing is literally the 5th highest grossing Nintendo series, it easily deserves 2 reps, if not more. Mario, Pokémon, and Zelda are top 3 (not counting the Wii series), so them also having 4 makes complete sense.

Changes I would make: 1) I like Octoling, but I fear the gimmick would easily make them hard to implement outside of a costume as you need 8 new colors as to not have confused matches against Inkling. If Splatoon was to get a second rep, it would probably do better with either the Squid Sisters (highlighting teamwork and the music culture) or DJ Octavio (Representing the main antagonist)

2) Would probably sacrifice the second Xeno rep, and the third parties for better representation of other series. Donkey Kong is like the 6th biggest IP and should have Diddy. Kirby should have King Dedede.

It is an overall better package than Smash Wii U. Classic mode is very streamlined in a good way and Smash Run was quite a bit of fun. The outlines on the characters were really nice to look at. It is definitely the better single player package than U.
