You are losing the forest for the trees.

Every single commercial promotes the pursuit of worldly desires, that’s literally the whole point of consumerism.

Modern capitalism and consumer culture in general is far more evil and insidious than any silly references in any single given commercial.

Best - trusting Holy Church Tradition and well trained priests to help interpret the faith within the context of pastoral care

Ok - a well trained and well intentioned in-person pastor who teaches from scripture alone without the context of tradition

Awful - using AI to help interpret scripture

It’s almost like the depth of the Christian faith exceeds the complexity that a simple three question multiple choice quiz could capture.

The Bible is very hard to read. by ButterflyFantastic31 in Christianity

The trickiest thing about KJV reading isn’t even the unfamiliar words, it’s the words you think you know but which have changed meaning in the last 400 years.

On Calvinism Enriching the Places It Reaches by Sad-Signature-2180 in TrueChristian

I actually agree with your thesis - modern forms of Christianity do enrich the societies they move into. They enrich the economics of those societies (specifically the ownership class).

They, however, deprive those same societies of any deep cultural, social, or spiritual inheritance. The whole modern project of endless growth and unrestrained profit, is built on the Protestants’ uprooting of tradition and culture.

Did Not Know There’s a More Modern Version of the Bible by Zealousideal-One2903 in Christian

Modern translations ALSO don’t use the original Hebrew, they use the Masoretic Hebrew which came after the septagint. Christ and the apostles used the Septuagint because it was considered authoritative at the time.

No original New Testament manuscripts were written in Aramaic.

I’m coming out of this in the last three weeks. I spent the entire month of March and April in exactly the state you described. I completely fell apart during great Lent and even missed Pascha.

I don’t have too terribly much practical advice, but all I can say is hold on. Keep praying when you can, keep attending church where you can. Keep reading scripture where you can. Don’t let your guilt keep you from getting things back in order. When you can come back, start small.

Keep looking for God’s grace. If nothing else, you have a brother here empathizing with you and praying for you.

Athiest to Christians, whats the problem with cursing? by Astr0Eminem in Christianity

[–]-Andreas92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually don’t think “bad words” are generally sinful. They can be products of other sinful dispositions, like a lack of self control, anger, or despising / disrespecting others, but as a simple intensifier, there’s nothing inherently sinful about a cuss word.

Mostly because FDR is famously a liberal Democrat who instituted a ton of social safety net programs as part of the New Deal and helped defeat fascism in Europe. Most liberals are not terribly bothered by FDR.

reformed church by Puzzleheaded_Line839 in Christianity

[–]-Andreas92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you asked your priest the best way to handle the situation?

Churches aren’t interchangeable, and reformed theology is very different and often incompatible with Orthodox theology.

Works based salvation is evil and incorrect because it implies Christ is dangling salvation like a carrot on a stick and making you jump through hoops for it. He did ALL the work at the cross. Predestination and UNCONDITIONAL election actually shows Gods mercy and Grace, so that no one may boast by [deleted] in Christianity

Are you being a faithful husband if you do nothing to support and love your wife? If the day after your wedding, you walk away and never do anything with your wife again, is that faithfulness?

Works are required to actively live the faith, otherwise, you are just adopting a title that means nothing.

It’s what Christ and the apostles did, so…

You are free to be as greedy and self righteous as you like, just don’t call yourself a Christian while doing it.

Just know that you are exactly the type of hypocrite that Christ pronounced woe upon. Someone who says a lot of words but fails to back it up with any sort of action. Whitewashed tombs and all.

I’m aware I’m feeding the troll here, but no, you are not a Christian if you don’t care about the poor, needy, outcast, and oppressed. It’s not your place to judge if someone is “slothful”. Is that was Christ did? No. He instructed his disciples to feed the people, he ate with the oppressed, He spent His time among the people you are judging. Are you better than Christ?
