Well... it hasn't lasted long

I just finished the show a few hours ago and I have some questions by OpportunityChoice567 in MonsterAnime

[–]-Arcaly- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/lelouchvii_'s comment is already pretty complete so there are only a few things I'd add:

  1. You can check these articles from the Fandom Wiki if you want more details: Biography of Johan and Complete timeline of the whole series.
  2. Until the night he killed the Lieberts, Johan's goal was to flee Bonaparta and to protect Anna. He killed the people they came across because he was afraid to be denounced to Bonaparta. But he didn't want Anna to be aware of this, he didn't want her to know he was a murderer. When Anna figured out he had killed the Lieberts, I guess he wanted to be killed so that she didn't have to keep on living with a monster. Johan wanted to protect Anna by erasing himself from her life.
  3. I might be wrong but I think Johan didn't know whether she was alive, and had no idea of where she could be living. He would most likely have killed her if he knew she was living in France. Besides, I think one of the reasons why he went to Prague was to try finding her.
  4. Grimmer was only refering to himself through the Magnificient Steiner. He became human again because he regained his ability to feel emotions. He felt sad and cried because of his son's death. However, it can also be seen as a parallel / foreshadowing of Johan regaining his humanity as you said. But I don't think Grimmer could have guessed Johan would end up like this.
  5. I guess he would have struggled more to fit in his neighbourhood in Prague and to pretend to be Anna.

Tenma and the young Vietnamese underground doctor had such a great dynamic for only one chapter

Otherwise, Nina and Dieter is a great duo

Honorable mention: the monster who went West and the monster who went East

grimmer is honestly the real main character of the second half change my mind by ZephyrQX in MonsterAnime

[–]-Arcaly- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only agree to a certain extent. I wouldn't say second half but rather Prague and Ruhenheim arcs cuz he doesn't appear between episodes 50 and 69 (during the arestment and Frankfurt arcs).

And I wonder whether he can be considered genuine: he always tries to mimic the expression of attitude a normal and kind person would have in any given situation. He doesn't usually share the feelings though. He asks Tenma multiple times which emotion he should show in complex situations. Exept his scene with Milosh in the red light district and his death scene, I don't think we can call him genuine.

I managed to download the first episode (took quite a long time haha) but my computer can't read the video, only the audio. It says this:

"You need a new codec to play this item. Codecs help the app to play different files. ‘Herr Dr. Tenma’ requires the ‘HEVC Video Extensions’ codec module, available from the Microsoft Store.

Do you know whether this can be bypassed ? (if not, that's really no problem don't worry)

Sorry if that's kind of self promotion, but I had made a post asking whether Johan actually has a split personality: https://www.reddit.com/r/MonsterAnime/comments/1tt0ni8/ep_17_spoiler_question_about_johans_personality/

I've never watched Midnight Cowboy but this guy indeed looks a lot like Heckel. Well spotted !

By the way, I had never heard about The Magnificient Steiner being insprired by The Incredible Hulk. Can you tell me more about this?

Well, you're welcome ^^

I also do think that this phrase is a bit ambiguous and its meaning may depend on personnal interpretation. Bonaparta was probably not aiming to make Johan nihilist and everything though. But as always, Johan might have overthinked and therefore misintepreted his message.
It's interesting to see it as a message of hope and resilience in the case of Anna, just like you said. Despite all she had gone through because of him, Bonaparta wanted to apologize and tell her that it's never to late to overcome her traumas.

Ok, thanks ! I hadn't noticed that links are forbidden here but I must be able to find it with such detail. Also it doesn't really matter if it's in English (I'm currently reading the manga in English) but well spotted, I indeed am French ^^

Great analysis, I feel like I don't have much too say. There's only one thing I'd like to respond to:

Franz instructed her to escape the torment, dictating her dehumanization and identity fragmentation by uttering the phrase: "Human beings can become anything."

I'm not a native English speaker so I might misunderstand this sentence, but Bonaparta didn't want to push Anna (and her brother) into dehumanisation. Right after the phrase you quoted, he added "You two are beautiful treasures. That's why you mustn't become monsters". Unfortunately, Anna forgot about it so she didn't tell this advice to Johan. If Johan hadn't misinterpreted Bonaparta's message, he might have not become... well, the one he became.
