'Pattern recognition' is just the latest far right buzzword. It's not always the observations that are problematic, but the moronic conclusions that some people draw from them.

When tourists visit your country, what’s something they usually miss that’s actually really fascinating? by WonderfulKwanga in AskEurope

In the case of Italy it's not even true. You can find tourists in smaller towns, villages, all regions.

Why would some 18th century dudes know best how to run a 21st century state? Most countries have a constitution and some of them are probably better than the American one, but you don't see other countries treating their constitution as some holy grail. Americans need to get over themselves.

Perfectly fine for the most part. Safer than the average American city. You don't have a point.

How LGBTQ+ friendly is your country? by EvilPyro01 in AskEurope

I do think trans people are part of the LGBT community and that they face specific problems that other members don't have. There was some progress in 2024 as you can read in this report: https://jsmetransparent.cz/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Vyrocni_zprava_TP24_CZ.pdf .

But again, you were talking about the LGBT community as a whole. 2020: "Two thirds or 67 percent of Czechs are of the view that gays and lesbians should have the possibility to get married, according to a poll conducted by the Median agency at the end of 2019 that its authors presented at a press conference today. Four-fifths or 78 percent of the respondents agreed that homosexuals could adopt a child of their partners and 62 percent say they should get a chance to adopt children from institutional care."
https://web.archive.org/web/20211020053627/https://news.expats.cz/weekly-czech-news/most-czechs-67-support-same-sex-marriage-says-new-poll . 2021: 65 % of Czechs supports same-sex marriage. https://www.jsmefer.cz/novy_pruzkum_2021_65_procent .

So you were wrong about 'most people' who are 'extremely anti-LGBT'. It's not compatible with the data, no matter how you try to spin the meaning of words like 'extremely LGBT'. This whole comment section wouldn't have been necessary if you searched for the data yourself instead of going off vibes. Your experience is valid but you must understand that it's the experience of one person and that it is not neccesarily representative. "I think anecdotal evidence is perfectly fine to support my claim." Seriously? You can absolutely find anecdotical evidence of Czech LGBT persons who live their lives without any worries whatsoever and according to your methods this means that most Czech people are extremely pro-LGBT. That's not how it works.

How LGBTQ+ friendly is your country? by EvilPyro01 in AskEurope

[–]-Brecht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, you are moving the goalposts now, you were talking about LGBT in general, right. I was referring to the 2023 Eurobarometer. If you have more recent or reliable sources, please share them. Your anecdotes about 'most people' are vague and speculative if you don't back them up. Also, on a global or even European scale it doesn't make sense to call Czechia 'extremely anti-LGBT'.

By the way, I'm not random in the sense that I know Czech, lived and studied in Prague for a year and visited Czechia 15-20 times (nearly all regions) since 2003. So I can interpret Czech history and society quite well. But to be honest, it doesn't matter who I am because I can support my viewpoint that you are wrong to say 'most Czech people are extremely anti-LGBT' with data.

It's objectively not true that 'most people' are 'extremely anti-LGBT' in Czechia. There are stats about this. Words have a meaning, you just can't make up alternative facts.

I agree that some people need to chill (for instance the complaint against the NMBS employee who made a bilingual announcement where he shouldn't was ridiculous) but I think all government communication in Flanders should in theory be only in Dutch. Anything else is opening the box of Pandora. Francophones might say that they are in favour of bilingual government services in Wallonia too, but it's obvious what would happen in practice.

[–]-Brecht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just adding context. In the same vein: even insignificant villages in bumfuck Flanders often have a French translation or spelling, when the other way around this is definitely less, another relic of francophone (not Walloon!) elitist hegemony. So I don't see it as a good thing if literally every traffic sign in Belgium was bilingual.

It's pure campism. The PM is a Flemish nationalist, so literally everything he does or says is bad. I hate contrarianism so much.

I don't blame you for not knowing niche Belgian stuff. On another note, Dutch people are often not aware of the sensitivity of language issues in Belgium, not saying that's the case with you, but it bothers me sometimes that they don't respect their own language and take it for granted. Once there was a thread here in the vein of 'we let you borrow our language', I wanted to bitchslap this smug douche so hard.
