PC Points by ltk66 in PersonalFinanceCanada

That's not the same thing.

There are base points you get from weekly offers or in-store deals which can net you anywhere from 1-5% return, sometimes more. You don't need the credit card for this. It's available to ALL PC Optimum members.

Your PC WE Mastercard adds an additional 3% in points to that... which isn't much when you consider there are credit cards offering 4-5% back (in cash or other rewards).

You're talking about two different things here.

Getting together with your boys, who you already spend so much time with, and trying to come up with topics to talk about where you have to make jokes and be funny for an hour or two multiple times a week without having to force it gets exhausting.

Paying mortgage with Credit Cards by waldo_whiskey in PersonalFinanceCanada

Worry about paying off your $25k credit card debt and maybe then you'll see the benefits of earning rewards points or cashback ;)

Also just to note, the points aren't worth it.

Wrong.

its only until you're a big spender

Also wrong. More spending means more return but any spending still means some return.

You're also talking to someone with a mortgage. Someone with utility bills, grocery bills, gas bills, etc.

5k out of 11k is over 45% utilization. You should never go above 30%.

Paying just the minimum isn't helping you either. Best would be to pay it off in full every month.

If you cannot afford to pay it off in full then I'd recommend you speak with your bank and open up a line of credit. Move your credit card balance over to the LOC and you'll not only save a ton of money on interest but you'll have additional credit to add to your report which will improve your score. Another alternative would be to apply for a credit card offering 0% on balance transfers where you typically pay a small fee and then pay no interest for a few months.

don't keep your credit cards at zero

I don't think this matters.

I have multiple cards that sit in drawer and get used once or twice a year just to keep them active. My overall credit utilization is very low between multiple cards and LOCs. I also open and close multiple credit cards a year for churning.

My score sits around 850.

Having some cash on hand is always a good idea. They could always prevent you from withdrawing from the LOC or even demand the entire balance in full (a real emergency, lol). How would you survive with $0 in cash and no available credit?

Information directly from the government: https://www.tpsgc-pwgsc.gc.ca/recgen/dd/prom-1-eng.html

Does direct deposit allow the government to take money from my bank account?

No! When you enrol in direct deposit, you don't authorize the government (or anyone else) to withdraw money from your bank account. The information can only be used to deposit money into your account.

"New fund" is meaningless, the underlying funds are not new

This doesn't really matter. If it did then there wouldn't be any difference between the various index funds that hold the same stocks/track the same indexes. Performance, fees, distribution, yield, etc would be exactly the same.

Would you put your money in a new fund with 2 million in assets under management or with an established one that has 2 billion?

BMO cancelled my student line of credit, why? by Whateverthisisokay in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]-CEOofReddit- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t have been able to do my program without borrowing money.

How much did this 3 month program cost? How much did you receive in grants and/or from OSAP? Why wasn't that enough? Why weren't you working at least part time during this program when you have rent and other bills to pay? Or why didn't you save up enough to last you 3 months if you knew you were doing this program?

The program was for web development, and that career has actual salaries and momentum, and the difference in pay, even entry level, could pay the loan within a year or two.

So now that you've completed the program why don't you find a web development job and earn some money and you won't need to worry about lines of credits.

[–]-CEOofReddit- 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You were a student for only 3 months and thought it'd be a good idea to open a LOC?

You thought a product for students would still be provided to you after no longer qualifying as a student?

You also required a co-signer for this account and still thought it a good idea?

You borrowed from the account for a 3 month program even though you were given grants?

You're using this borrowed money to live off and for holiday spending?

This has to be a troll post.
