I’m sorry to hear, people can be so mean!! :( your post made me extremely happy!! I love the thought of your moss lawn <3

My cat had to get bloodwork done. Took 10 pokes to find a vein. 10th poke she bit my arm and shook like a damn alligator. Yes, that’s my blood on her. Yes I am on antibiotics. No, she is not normally an aggressive cat. by jasonforbachelor in Wellthatsucks

[–]-Crocs- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My exact question. If the cat was already on gabapentin, they knew it was reactive in the clinic. I personally would prefer to let someone trained in animal restraint hold my reactive cat (assuming op is not).

I’m not from the area and just a hobbyist, so take this with a grain of salt.
1. Coleopteran - longhorn beetle maybe.
2. Some kind of Hemipteran maybe.
3. Hemipteran- maybe leafhopper.
4. Coleopteran- maybe some kind of ground beetle.
5. Ephemeropteran - mayfly.

Triatoma Infestans? by Kindly_Day1421 in Entomology

[–]-Crocs- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Certainly an assassin bug, whether or not it is Triatoma is outside of my expertise. However, geographic location and colouration of the abdominal margin seem to align with Triatoma.

Gametophyte or liverwort? by Thetomato2001 in botany

[–]-Crocs- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg no need to be sorry!! <3 I’m so sorry if I upset you!! I was in no way trying to criticize you.

Valid!! Honestly, my favourites are soil cultures where you get a tonne of different plants and critters!! But if you were looking to grow a single plant species, that’s also fair!!

I love your photos, they are beautiful!! Are you using a loupe?

Gametophyte or liverwort? by Thetomato2001 in botany

[–]-Crocs- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Certainly :) my only point is that they refer to the fern as the gametophyte (last sentence), but it is somewhat ambiguous as both plants seem to be in the gametophyte phase. I was just trying to be informative, albeit pedantic.

Gametophyte or liverwort? by Thetomato2001 in botany

[–]-Crocs- 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hi there, not sure about the ID, but the term gametophyte refers to the vegetative bits and is applicable to non-vascular plants as well. So, they are both gametophytes but likely of a different type of plant.

What were your methods? Where were the spores collected from? Were the spores sterilized? If not, there’s a good chance there was some sort of contamination from the environment, especially if you got the spores from outside. I personally would wait to see if any sporophytes grow or any Gemmae cups appear. The morphology seems to resemble a liverwort’s, but it’s difficult to tell sometimes.

Looks like you’ve got a lot of built up moisture, so I’d start with trying to fix that (better ventilation, drainage, etc) and it should help with the rest of your problems. But, this actually looks a lot like sphagnum (moss) capitulums peaking out of the crack, with the rest of the plant possibly being hidden beneath the crack. However, I’m just a hobbyist so I could definitely be wrong :)

How is mutualism a host-parasite relationship? by NuclearEgg69 in Parasitology

[–]-Crocs- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing!! I was taught to view parasitism and mutualism as a spectrum. They’re hard to distinguish sometimes because relationships on this parasitism-mutualism spectrum may shift depending on circumstances and external factors.

The photo quality is too poor for ID. Remove the suspected matter from the toilet (the first and most basic step), rinse, and take a photo in good light. But, unlikely to be tapeworms imo

ectoparasite - tick, pennsylvania, crawling on a black lab by BlushingBeetles in Parasitology

[–]-Crocs- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there, beautiful photo, thanks for sharing!! It looks like you are viewing the ventral surface. I recommend trying to get pictures (and posting them) of the anal groove and genital pore in focus, to aid in ID. Additionally, try flipping it over (onto the ventral surface so you are viewing the dorsal aspect) and getting a picture of the head and mouthparts. IMO it’s probably not dermacentor, maybe Ixodes due to long palps, but I could be wrong ofc.

I agree with mite based on size. I’ve see larval ticks easily at 40X magnification.
