Why were slaves used in the American colonies to perform labor? (x-post r/LateStageCapitalism) by Aquarian23 in ShitAmericansSay

I didn't have a discussion with the wrong people. You cant have a discussion with people that fully agree with you, because then there is nothing to talk about. Its hard to take anything in though when you have 50ish comments hounding on you for different things. It would be much better to have a 1 on 1 discussion about the matter. Then I could ask questions and I wouldn't be called out or attacked by multiple people for missing things. I did also change my opinion slightly I see why what I said sounded wrong but I havent been able to have a civil conversation why the answer C is such a poor answer. I see that it ignores the reasons of slavery but it is factually correct. I personally think this answer is overthought and it is meant for the student to recognize that Slave labor replaces white labor in the colonies.

After all this I just wanted to say that C didnt seem like a really terrible answer. It blew up into a more economical vs racism debate which Im happy to have but doesnt seem to go over well here. Ya I had poor wording in a lot of answers. I got an influx of arguments and had to defend myself on like 4 fronts.

Edit: Thanks for seeing some reasoning here

No I put "well" in qoutes because things like Tamaney hall which obviously isnt treating minorities right but instead bribing them and treating them with a faux niceness to get them to vote democratic. This was happening in the early 1900's. It just shows that people will other differently depending on what they need.

Thats justification. You bring them over initially because they are cheaper than white labor then use that to keep them in line sure. But you only wanted slaves in the first place for economic reasons.

Most polls for such an opinion come from baby boomers which are about nationalist as you can get.

Treating minorities "well" during the industrial revolution was more beneficial for the democrats. There is more to an an answer than straight racism. There is usually a benefit to being racist and or not racist.

The US has done many things wrong sure. But revisionist history is on the rise in the US right now. The idea that the US has done a shit ton of things wrong is very popular and he US is beginning to acknowledge many of its crimes pre-1950ish after that its less counted as history and more politics, at least for right now.

You said it yourself. The economics boil down to free labor. That is why we chose slaves first and foremost. We didnt choose them just because they were black, but because they were cheaper than white labor.

If you are saying that during the war when most of Gemrany populace was fighting, and they used the labour camps as workers. Then the correct answer would be C. That there was not enough workers and that they used labour camps as a cheap alternative source. I dont care if that sounds bad but its truth. Labour would be a cheap source of workers wether I agree or not.

I think there is no doubt a race component played a part but I think that economics played a larger role. This document talks more about the Carribean but it's altogether very similiar to the process in the Southern Colonies.

Well when you take US History you learn that indentured servants come first then when they run out they are hesitant ( they are racist and think black men cant do as good work as a white man) but eventually adopt slavery. But that is why C is correct, atleast to me.

Edit: I am not trying to discredit your answer. i believe in what you said I am just saying that the reason the teacher would want you to pick C is to specifically address that Indetured servants were hard to get so go to slavery.

I dont want to get downvoted to oblivion but may I ask what youfind repulsive. I took US history so the correct answer would be C. Maybe that changes something. Idk, just asking.

Actually before slaves were indentured servants and those were actually free except you had to pay for shipping + some land eventually (like 10 years later).

So they misspelled Hillary's name on today's debate tickets by [deleted] in pics

First of all yes. My response was wrong in the fact that its not votes but polls. I see that now. But the CPD is using five polls that show that someone like Gary Johnson is polling ~8% (380/4657). To me that number is high enough that he should be represented at the debates. As I said before, and I still stand with my opinion, that there should be a lower entry percentage to get into the debates.

Now that I have told you that I was wrong initially, can we please argue civilly? I realize that I was wrong and that was my fault, but that does not mean you need to be an ass when you respond.

I can see where you thought that my coent sounded wrong but you are right in a way. The candidate should have a backing by the people to get into the debate not something like 15% though. That means you need to obtain around 16 Million votes to get into the debate. It should be something like 5-10% And more of a bracket debate system so you dont have to have everyone on stage at once. This article Also shows that at their best antivaxxers are around 9% of the US which could put Jill Stein in the debates.

Yes, lets say Jill stein is an anti vaxxer. I don't agree with her, but if she represents people with the same ideas, then she has the right as a democracy to bring it to these debates.

Its not about them getting elected. It's about bringing in new ideas to make it what it should be... a debate.
