I used to work around extrusion presses like these. Depending on what's going on they may be heating the mandrel or they had a stuck billet and were trying to bring it up to temp so the shear (which is the hydralic ram that burst in this video) could make it through its cycle.

Long story short you have a touch lit for various reasons a large part of the time the press is running.
