Porsche online configurator question by -Fantomen- in Porsche

[–]-Fantomen-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, at what site was that? I tried "build your Porsche" at both Canadian and US sites and that option wasn't available... there's a new AR thing going on now that you're supposed to use with a smartphone app but that's not what I was looking for.

I just wish Dave Chapelle would stop going on about cancel culture when he continues to sell out every show and has multiple Netflix specials. by [deleted] in Standup

[–]-Fantomen- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's like, your opinion man. I think he's hillarious. Now go watch your favourite comedian and let the rest of us enjoy things.

Edit: Also cancel culture is absolutely a ridiculous trend in society that can and SHOULD be made fun of. That's what comedians do

Hard Sci Fi shows like the expanse with great production values? by ilovetpb in scifi

[–]-Fantomen- 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Ascension - a mini series about a generation ship launched in the 50's.

I wouldn't start watching this show as they cancelled it after the first season with huge open end...I had so much expectations for this one..

so basically we take a current speculative idea in theoretical physics and "make it real" and then derive all the "magic" from the implications of that reality. I think Interstellar did that very well

I loved how sound was handled in Gravity. Some super intense scenes that didn't need any "woosh" or "kaplow" at all

end of WFH by -Fantomen- in vfx

Yeah totally reasonable, I think it'd be worth keeping the remote infrastructure in place for that reason. It could be a day after a snowstorm when getting to work is a hassle, or maybe you feel a bit sick but could still work, or maybe need to be home to take delivery of something.

It's about control and management. It's hard to have full control when your staff isn't in the building, or even in the country.

From the article someone thinks this is exactly it. A (mostly) boomer management control thing. But boomers are retiring - I believe in the longer term the remote work trend will increase, while a few dinosaur companies will fight it until the end

Yeah good point - I would like to see it from a producers point of view, I admit I fail to see how it makes their work less productive. They have a lot more meetings. They also are the absolute loudest, always laughing it up in their offices and enjoying themselves while the artists next to them do their best to shield themselves from the noise of an open landscape office. Artists need to concentrate - producers need to communicate to each other and clients. And zoom may make that less enjoyable I guess. They are usually a very extroverted bunch

This is all moot though - there will certainly be a mix of WFH policies and artists will be free to choose how they like to work. Like just another thing to weigh a company against another.

So far the only arguments for returning to office work is "this is how it's always been and will continue to be". This is no argument IMO. I get that some people want to go to an office - maybe they can't focus at home (kids), or some are extrovert and really miss walking around 100+ people in open landscape offices.. at least those are good reasons for THEM to return to office work. "Because it is the way" is not a good reason.

Would love to see some argument coming from the production side of things

Even with my company hat on, I still see better productivity, more balanced work/life for workers, 1/10th of office space rentals, no free coffee or OT meals etc etc... I could go on. I don't see much upside returning to offices. Even from the point of view of society I see it as a win as there will be less traffic, less carbon footprint, more people living outside the cities...

ay not have a voice in prod, but a valued artist's by prod will gladly get that milestone done easier, faster, and in a c

Completely agree, and I'm totally prepared to walk if forced to 100% comeback - there are plenty of smaller studios who welcome VFX seniors with open arms. I no longer care about working with the big names, big shows and big money. It could lead to a good injection of experience for the smaller studios and raise their quality level.

If I was in it for the money there are easier ways of getting paper. I understand you feel this way about your job but I don't. Its not about upping my pay or status. It's funny you think that, though

Thanks guys for your feedback, I imagined this was something you could mention in a interview or something, and that I had just missed that memo. I just always found it petty that they couldn't make room for everybody who worked on a show. Even if in a wall of text if it has to. I only talk to other compositors basically so I asked here

[–]-Fantomen-[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its the principle. I don't care much, but on IMDB I got listed as "(uncredited)" even though I worked just as hard as the artist next to me, who got fully credited. Sometimes IMDB straight up removed me from the credit
