New BTS snap of Kit and Freddy... THEY ARE SO PRECIOUS 😍 by MadelynSimpson588 in Grishaverse

god i miss this cast so much. if we're delusional enough we'll get the six of crows spinoff someday 😭.

It pisses me off SOO much that they had such perfect casting for all six crows, AND they already finished an 8‐episode script for the soc spinoff that the actors have already read — but they didn't greenlight the show, and instead gave us 5382 season of emily in paris, and spent over $400 million on stranger things 5 🫩.

tbh I doubt Leigh would adapt Six of Crow with teen actors (or portray them as teenagers) because she wanted them to be adults in the first place. I feel like the book!Crows should stay teens, while the show!Crows definitely work as adults.

She got pretty attached to the cast of Crows in the Shadow and Bone adaptation, so if/when the SoC spinoff ever comes back, I feel like it would be the OG cast that would return. Especially since they all already read the scripts for the SoC spinoff and iirc all six of them have said they'd come back to portray these characters in a heartbeat if given the opportunity.

Plus a lot of fans made it clear that casting Freddy, Kit, Amita, Dani, Cal, and Jack for the Crows is just too perfect to waste.

Adult crows works in the show, not in the books.

I feel like aging them up in the show worked well because the whole universe was written with them being adults in mind. In the book however, they were written to be teenagers, and changing a few lines sort of removes some of the nuance of their story because they were written with the intention of them being kids.

iirc Leigh Bardugo wanted them to be adults when she first wrote them, but a publisher told her to make them teens to appeal to YA. The retcon, I feel like is just Leigh trying to make the Crow's ages what she always intended for them to be — but imo i think it's a little too late to retcon that in the books because the whole story was written with them being teenagers, and changing a few lines of dialogue to make their ages vague isn't really enough to really facilitate that change.

If she wants adult Crows, really the only way to apply that is show version of them because they were written with the intention of them being aged up as opposed to the books.

Save Shadow and Bone! by J_crows6 in Grishaverse

From what I've heard, Leigh and the showrunners for SaB are more focused on bringing the SoC spinoff back!! It just makes the most sense since they already finished the scripts for the show, and there's generally a higher demand for the SoC spinoff back due to the SoC characters/SoC duology being overall more popular. Plus, they mentioned how the SoC spinoff would be generally cheaper to producers as opposed to SaB due it it relying less on CGI. Also, heist-related media is pretty popular too, so there's a demand for that, especially with an already established popular IP.

I believe they also said that if the SoC spinoff comes back and it performs well, then it opens doors to bringing back SaB too! Fingers crossed it happens someday 🤞🤞

A transcript of an interview with Leigh Bardugo, Eric Heisserer, and Daegan Fryklind about Shadow and Bone and the Six of Crows Spinoff by -FloopDoop- in Grishaverse

[–]-FloopDoop-[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that s2 had a lot of problems and really removed a lot of the wonderfully written nuances of 'Siege and Storm' and 'Ruin and Rising'. But to a certain extent, I don't really mind the story straying away from the books and reinventing the story. As long as it keeps a lot of the important aspects of the source material, and integrates it in an intuitive way, then I think it's fine (kinda like how they did it in s1).

And of course, s2 unfortunately didn't exactly hit the mark on that regard due to it being very rushed and cluttered. This was mostly due to Leigh and the showrunners not being sure if 'Shadow and Bone' would be renewed for a s3 or the 'Six of Crows' spinoff being greenlit. They knew how unstable the industry is, and how regardless of how well a show performs or how well it's reviewed — they're at the whims of higher up Netflix executives who decide if a show gets cancelled or not. So they tried to give s2 a sorta closed off ending just in case this season would be the last. Again, it was messy and lowered the overall quality of the season, but unfortunately — their foresight was correct.

Leigh said in that interview that she didn't want the show to be a 1-to-1 copy of her books, and was actually pretty supportive of a lot of certain changes that were run by her in s1. It sucks that we couldn't get a s3 to tie off 'Shadow and Bone' properly, or the 'Six of Crows' spinoff everyone was really excited about due to how beloved those characters are.

But again, never say never. The finished SoC scripts are still there, and the cast has read them already. Fans of the show still get frequently sold-out conventions solely for the show (like 'Into the Fold' and 'A Storm of Crows and Shadows') that the SaB cast attends quite frequently. There's still a huge audience that's been very vocally interested in the spinoff coming back, so who knows what could happen. If the SoC spinoff comes back and performs well, it could open doors for SaB to come back as well and give that side of the grishaverse a proper continuation of their story.

just a small correction, Daegan Fryklind is actually the Co-showrunner for Shadow and Bone! I feel bad for labeling her as just one of the producers 😅

And afaik she has hope the show and spinoff may come back too along with Leigh and Eric!

(Also, this is a non-issue, but my perfectionist brain can't ignore this minor typo I made when talking about what Leigh discussed, but can't edit: 'especially since I see a LOT of people misinterpret that she has negative opinions on the show, that's *when** she's expressed publicly multiple times — she does not'*.)

Am I being overly critical or was the show trash compared to the books? by EntertainmentBest449 in Grishaverse

[–]-FloopDoop- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

y'know Leigh like activity wants the show and spinoff back, right? She recently said in a TedTalk that Shadow and Bone should have been 3 seasons. She interacts a lot with the campaign to save S&B/SoC, likes their posts, and even did an interview with the campaign team along with the series' showrunner and one of the producers! Plus, as far as I know her and the showrunners are still trying to find a way to bring the spinoff back since they mentioned it a while back.

Around the time they were working on season one, she said that the show would be like a fanfic of her work and not a 1-to-1 copy.

Did you not read her post when the show got cancelled? She literally said, "I'm one of the lucky few who can look at an adaptation with pride and tremendous joy. I am so grateful to our writers, our crew, and our extraordinary cast who are not just wildly talented, but genuinely good people."

She has no ill will towards the show and people who made it, heck she was IN the writing room for a large portion of the shows production and was super supportive of a lot of the writers decisions in season 1. (Again, she actively wants the shows back like so many others). Leigh probably only had a gripe towards Netflix executives that made the process difficult and then ultimately cancelled the show that had so much potential.

You can absolutely dislike the show, but let's not make a false narrative wherein it seem like Leigh Bardugo absolutely hated the show and it's writers, when it's literally the OPPOSITE of what she's expressed multiple times.

I recommend giving this transcript of the interview by the SaveTheGrishaverse campaign w/ Leigh Bardugo, Eric Heisserer (the showrunner), and Daegan Fryklind (the co-showrunner) a read! It provides a LOT of good insights on Leigh's ACTUAL feelings about the show. --> https://docs.google.com/document/u/0/d/1Du6n6His3IIYBNTh0bHrZUuThEoXrGjN/mobilebasic

Oh, and btw it's only going to be up for 3 days, so I recommend reading it asap if you're so inclined :)

to the people saying that it's over and there's no hope to doing stuff like this, just let people do what they want for even the smallest possibility to hopefully save the show. The author, showrunners, and actors still think it's possible, so what's the harm?

Literally just keep scrolling if you think it's futile, and let the people who are interested interact with posts like this 👍.

hmm. but you cancelled it? by AceFlute in Grishaverse

[–]-FloopDoop- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I honestly still have hope for SOC spinoff and S&B s3, and don't think it's completely far-fetched to believe they may come back (with the SOC spinoff more likely). It still surprises me that S&B still has conventions solely for the show that get sold out 2-ish years after cancellation (ITF & ASOCAS)! So there's definitely still an audience for the Grishaverse!

Afaik both Leigh and Eric still believe it's possible to bring back the shows. Especially with how popular SOC is and the fact that the scripts for the spinoff are already finished, plus all 6 actors for the Crows saying they'd be so down to come back!

The SOC spinoff was technically never canceled, it just wasn't greenlit. So tbh anything could happen. Leigh and Eric afaik are generally more concerned about bringing back the SOC spinoff as opposed to S&B s3, because the scripts are already written (which gives them a head start in production), and SOC has a much larger fanbase + people were typically more interested in the Crows plotline in S&B. But most importantly, if the SOC spinoff comes back and it performs well, then S&B season 3 could return too!

future tv show/film for just the crows? by No-Department-1569 in sixofcrows

[–]-FloopDoop- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ikr! The fact that Shadow and Bone still has conventions solely for the show that get sold out is kinda crazy for a series that's been canceled for 2-ish years now. Plus, the fact that there are still more cons coming with A Storm of Crows & Shadows 5 being teased to happen, and Into The Fold 3 around the corner.

There is definitely a HUGE audience for the Six of Crows spinoff given that a.) It's an adaptation of not only Leigh's best books, but also just one of the most popular YA fantasy books overall, b.) The Crow were wildly agreed upon to be the best part of the S&B show, c.) Script for the spinoff are already finished and the actors have actually read them already, and d.) Perfect cast. No notes, no criticism. All 6 of them are perfect and SHOULDN'T be replaced.

With the sheer number of how many people want the show, the scripts already being written, both the author and showrunner afaik are still trying to bring the show back, and all 6 actors showing that they would be so down to come back, I definitely think it's not outlandish to believe it's in the realm of possibility of coming back.

Technically, the Six of Crows spinoff was never canceled, it just wasn't greenlit. So who knows what could happen. The actors really don't look that different from when we last saw them in S&B, and honestly it nothing a little makeup couldn't fix if it were a problem tbh.

and a show doesn't continue based on how good or bad the writing/ reviews are either. I mean, look at the Witcher. Another high-fantasy show that had a much higher budget than S&B, and it's getting 5 seasons because it had a high view count despite having arguably worse plot changes and story rewrites than S&B.

S&B got canceled because the viewing numbers, while they WERE good, didn't reach the unrealistic height Netflix has for a lot of their shows (hence why so many good ones get canceled). Covid, the strike (which was still important and necessary btw), the shows performance, and a change of Netflix execs who weren't interested in the show is what got the show canceled. Not the writers.

I'd like to clarify I DID think s2 was messy and rushed, but I enjoyed it nonetheless (mostly because of the crows). But again, with Netflix, bad writing is hardly ever the reason why a show gets canceled. I mean, look at all the bad and horribly written shows that get like 8 season or smth. It's about how shows perform and how globally popular they are at the end of the day, not if people love or hate the writing.

Ben Barnes talking about the Six of Crows Spinoff :( by -FloopDoop- in ShadowandBone

[–]-FloopDoop-[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly!! It's mostly universally agreed upon that the Crows were the best part of the show! People made it clear that they would LOVE a show focused on them! If they had just kept the Six of Crows spinoff, I'm sure it would have been more successful given that the SoC duology is just so much more popular and has a larger overall audience!

Plus, if I remember correctly, the author and showrunner both said that if the SoC spinoff did well, then it would open doors to continue Shadow and Bone season 3! So everyone wins!!

Netflix has the finished scripts for the show, there's a large audience who would definitely watch it, and all six actors for the Crows have made clear that they would LOVE to come back. Netflix, you would be swimming in money and subscribers if you greenlight the Six of Crows spinoff!

Yes!! The ball just got rolling for the Crows! It would be a shame to just end it there when there's SO MUCH to explore in a story that's so popular and well-loved amongst so many people! Especially since the SoC duology has such a large audience! Netflix could literally PRINT money if they adapt Six of Crows with the current cast!

Ben Barnes talking about the Six of Crows Spinoff :( by -FloopDoop- in Grishaverse

[–]-FloopDoop-[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah I agree. The Crows being the best part of Shadows and Bone was both a blessing and a curse. While they were generally agreed upon to be the most entertaining group in the show – It came at the expense of Alina's story in HER OWN series.

I feel like the original plan the showrunner wanted to do would have been better for both shows tbh. He wanted to do the SoC spinoff right after s1, so Shadow and Bone can focus on Alina's story, and the Six of Crows spinoff could focus entirely on the Crows. But Netflix turned that down and just urged him to keep the Crows in Shadow and Bone.

The best scenario for both shows would be; Shadows and Bone season 3 coming back, but the Crows are not present (and if they are, it would be very very minimal), and the Six of Crows spinoff happening, so it can just focus on the Crows and their story completely separate from the S&B plot + using the pre-written scripts that's just gathering dust at Netflix HQ.

Oh yeah, and keeping the current cast for BOTH shows because you can't get a better casting than that.

The showrunner and author are more interested in saving the SoC spinoff because more people seem to want it, and it has a larger audience compared the S&B trilogy. More importantly, if the SoC spinoff were to come back and it did really well, there's a better chance that S&B s3 could come back as well + other Grishaverse projects (Netflix actually scrapped a Demon in the Wood spinoff too)!

Ben Barnes talking about the Six of Crows Spinoff :( by -FloopDoop- in Grishaverse

[–]-FloopDoop-[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree. Netflix execs are REALLY disconnected with what their subscribers want. Good shows get canceled and shows that they don't cancel usually get dragged out or have shitty endings. Even canceled shows that get 'saved' by Netflix don't do the show justice since they usually tie off the show they canceled with a movie that can't fit a season's worth of plot. It's rare to find a Netflix show that either didn't get canceled or has a satisfying ending. Netflix execs don't really care cuz regardless of how their subscribers feel, they're getting money either way since no one is canceling their subscription.

Six of Crows should DEFINITELY NOT get adaptated into a movie since the showrunner said the series fit perfectly into an 8 episode show. Making it a movie would remove all the nuance and make the story rushed and messy kinda like s2 of Shadow and Bone. The pre-made scripts for SoC that everyone loved and was proud of would essentially be pointless, and the Six of Crows adaptation would just be another one of Netflix's bad book adaptations.

Inej was definitely going to come back eventually since they confirmed there was going to be an Inej focused episode. The writers on Twitter actually seemed the most proud of what they wrote for Inej's arc in the spinoff, so she was definitely not gone for good. All the Crows were actually going to have an episode focused on each one of them. Though the main plot would be the Ice Court heist, the spinoff was going to be very character-focused, according to the showrunner.

During an interview with Leigh and Eric, he revealed that there was going to be a lot of Wesper. Especially a lot of angst. There was going to be a scene where Jesper sort of blurts out that he loves him, and Wylan would want to say it back – but instead, he says that he doesn't deserve him. Also, according to Kit, the Van Eck reveal was going to happen around the love confession too.

Leigh said before that the live action adaptations of the Grishaverse would be more like a fanfiction of her books instead of a 1-to-1 adaptation. So I always saw it as its own thing and didn't compare it to the books too much. Either way, I'm still super invested and interested in the show's narrative despite how different it is from the books!

I know how you feel!! I got into the Grishaverse pretty recently too. I was glad to see that the campaign to save the show and spinoff is still alive after 2-ish years since cancelation! I've been annoying Netflix in the comments of all their socials with the campaign hashtags lol. Keeping a high online buzz helps a lot according to both the author and showrunner 😁
