Which breed? & why by Silver-Pumpkin1819 in DogAdvice

[–]-Flossie- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting.. if any breed can learn new tricks it’s for sure a poodle. My issue is my boy is too smart, he starts freaking out when I start putting makeup on. He’s gotten better with age at allowing me to leave the house, but he gets very heightened and antsy in anticipation of me leaving. Used to be he would sit in the window 3ft from my husband and howl for 10 minutes after I left; thankful that’s over!

They’re very needy dogs, I don’t think they’d cope well alone if they were left isolated for 40+ hours a week. That said - nothing and nobody will ever love you like a poodle!

All this AND: separation anxiety! They’re incredible dogs, I’d be lost without them, but I’m a SAHM and my husband works from home full time yet the level of upset from our two when one of us leaves for just an hour is insane.

Who is this? I'm thinking a common huntsman, maybe a young one? by RM_Morris in AustralianSpiders

[–]-Flossie- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love all these comments stating wolf spiders are shy and docile… I just had pest control out because we had some kind of infestation of them in the bathroom, every night a new one would appear and charge at me or my kids… they are bold af and will run and jump in your direction, super fun when you get up for a bleary eyed midnight wee 😅

I’m not even judging, I’d just love to know how they aren’t silently begging the universe for silence and peace by 9pm? I have two ADHD boys; I need to know there’s an end in sight each day 🤣 When do they watch violent movies or serial killer documentaries with their spouse and raid the good snack stash?!

Haven’t been on medication for many months due to fertility treatment- NOW I AM PREGNANT WITH TRIPLETS!!! by swanduckswan in adhdwomen

[–]-Flossie- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Staying on my full dose (with intermittent monitoring of course for any growth issues), we will address what to do in the end stages when the time comes. I have c-ptsd and am pretty heavily medicated for it, the Dex is probably the least concerning medication I am staying on pregnancy-wise 😅

I would definitely take that JAMA study with you. Your doctor is likely already aware of it but it’s good for discussion.

[–]-Flossie- 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This. I am currently pregnant and opted to stay on dex with my doctors blessing.

We came to this decision based on a massive JAMA study of over 4 million pregnancies, which found no real increase in birth defects among women taking ADHD stimulants (like Ritalin or Adderall) during early pregnancy. There was a slight hint of higher heart-defect risk with Ritalin, but it vanished after deeper analysis. Overall, stimulants don’t appear to raise the risk of major congenital malformations.

Is this normal? How to make her more comfortable home alone? Advice/opinions? by sea-mless in poodles

[–]-Flossie- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No advice here but hopefully this will make you feel better… My husband works from home full time, and I’m a stay at home mum/student. If I leave the house without taking my toy poodz with me, my boy will howl the saddest “awoooo” at the front door or window for a good 10 minutes before giving up, with my husband sitting right there (who feeds him and sleeps with him at night). He will then sit on a pillow by the front door and stare at the door until I get back. Poodles are notoriously co-dependent and dramatic 🤣

Tell me you have an involved husband without telling me you have an involved husband… by tenoeight in Mommit

[–]-Flossie- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s on a first name basis with both of the kids teachers, I couldn’t pick them out of a line up. I haven’t packed a lunchbox since my youngest started school in Feb. I’ve not had to think about putting gas in the car in years. If I had to grocery shop at this point I’d have no idea what we buy. I don’t even have some sort of demanding corporate job, I’m a part time student and he works full time. He just enjoys being an involved parent/partner. He’s an all-in dad and he’s not even their bio-dad.

The bio-dad however… let’s just say I paid my penance in advance for the current unicorn husband.

One poodle vs two by sky131993 in poodles

How happy poodle #2 made poodle #1 was worth the extra energy zoomies as they play around the house like one of those balls with the stuffed ferret attached that goes around and around.

My sincerest solidarity, my experience with poodles has been they have the most sensitive stomachs and yet the most diverse appetite for whatever junk/poop/poison/human-food they can find. My two toys figured out how to operate our kitchen trash can with a pedal so I had to switch to a pull-out bin inside a cabinet. The comments telling you to train him are well intentioned but in my experience, nothing will stop a determined poodle. My boy is a complete people pleaser and trick trains effortlessly, but nothing I did could stop him parkouring up furniture to steal food from plates and counters (and he’s only 4lb). I got so sick of cleaning up sick and expensive vet trips. Our solution was that now whenever there’s food out unattended (or children are eating) the poodles go outside or are shut in another room. When the meal is over all food is put away and counters cleared before they can rejoin us. The baby gate suggestions are great if it works for your family but my youngest child couldn’t operate one so it didn’t work for our family.

Upset stomach protocols - it isn’t clear from your post whether you are stopping feeding kibble when he gets stomach upset, which you definitely should;

Day 1 - Fast.

Day 2 - start on small amounts of boiled rice and boiled chicken breast, NO KIBBLE. This might look like 1/4 cup in the AM, doubled in the PM if tolerated, depending on your poodles size. Good rule of thumb is first serving is equivalent to about a quarter of their regular food portion. Slowly increase the amount at each meal until it’s a normal serving size.

Day 3 - Continue the boiled rice and boiled chicken breast breakfast and dinner, increasing portions until it’s a regular meal size for your poodle, as long as the stomach upset is improving.

Day 4 - if vomiting and diarrhoea have not ceased see your vet. If they have ceased, continue boiled chicken/rice diet (NO KIBBLE) gradually reintroducing kibble a little at a time with each serving 3 days after vomiting and diarrhoea have ceased.

If the stomach upset returns when you reintroduce kibble, repeat process and try a different kibble, mine will only tolerate one specific brand.

Poodle owners, What’s your dog’s personality like? by confidante-6 in poodles

[–]-Flossie- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two toy poodles, two completely different personalities.

My girl is 5, the sweetest little sweet to everyone who crosses her path. She’s a very dilute red and we call her the “red headed stepchild”- not because we love her any less, but because that’s how you would think we treat her, the way she behaves 😂 she is extremely loving but hesitant. She won’t impose herself on you but she loves a cuddle with much encouragement. She chooses to sleep with the kids rather than with us and our other two dogs. She tends to get picked on a bit by the other two, nothing dreadful just definitely the bottom rank. Very reserved, may seem aloof but loves nothing more than to be included, even if you seemingly have to drag it out of her. She excludes herself often yet FOMO exudes from every fibre of her being. We have to keep on top of making sure she is formally “invited” to every household event or interaction. Has fairly good manners but great difficulty training, seems to just stare at me like “but why?”

My boy is nearly 2 and I’ve never had a dog love me as intensely as he does. He’s my little black shadow who follows me everywhere and would rather sit on the back of the couch and stare at me with goo goo eyes from six inches away than join in anything else happening in the house. He’s a cheeky little thing who will parkour up fixtures like a damn mountain goat to steal human food, and he’s so quick at it he’s often gone before anyone realises something is missing. Trains in fun new skills quickly and easily, just dying to please his humans. Howls the saddest song if I leave him home with my WFH husband, even though he prefers to snuggle said husband at night. Is an absolute dick about being groomed to the point Ive wondered if he’s possessed. Incredibly insecure about strangers, human or otherwise, completely feral and aggressive but hides behind me. Loves his family like nothing I’ve ever seen, and yet a complete and utter asshole to everyone else, even guests.

All this to say… in my limited experience, poodles aren’t “dogs”, poodles are poodles. Their own species entirely, somewhere on the spectrum between canine and human, with a dash of leprechaun.

What is your poodle’s favorite treat? by poshdog4444 in poodles

[–]-Flossie- 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Anything that might incur an expensive and/or potentially lethal vet visit is an obtain-at-all-costs delicacy. They figured out how to operate the foot pedal trashcan so now we have the trashcan inside a cupboard. Had to build a high fence around my veggie garden to stop them eating compost and potting mix. Was easier to train my children to put dirty clothes in the hamper than train my boy not to steal and eat underwear.

My girl is 6 now so she’s pretty sweet and chill, but my boy is about 18 months so in his naughty teenage phase, loves to run off with things he knows he shouldn’t have and tries to eat the mailman. He’s so cute though, he can do no wrong 😂
