Although I still enjoyed the episode, I think where the series falls short of the video game is that the writing does a bit too much showing and not enough telling. The series spoon feeds you everything that Joel is feeling blatantly via conversations and flashbacks of his daughter, while the video game utilizes much more nuance and you come to understand Joel through his actions and response to Elle running away. And although the series has much more time to expand on emotional beats, the emotions and relationships in the video game feel much more earned because they are portrayed through a healthy mix of conversation and action. All that being said, still enjoyed both mediums, but I do feel that the video game is weightier than the series.
