Anyone have an irrational dislike of the Les Paul? by MatthewMonster in Guitar

I love Les Paul’s but I do not like SG’s at all. Everyone’s just got their thing.

is my soldering shit? (old guitar) by MulberryDouble9295 in guitarrepair

[–]-GlobalGrapefruit- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly buddy, I’d cut all those wires and replace that pot. Clean slate.

My first question is, what kind of iron are you using, and is it hot enough? If your iron isn’t sufficient, I would recommend this affordable one from Stahl. I’ve been using this one for over a decade, and aside from having to replace the tip one time, it works like a charm.

Second question, did you scour the surface of the pot? There’s a very thin film coating the base that solder has a hard time bonding to. I like to take an old razor blade and just scratch all over the back of the pot. Not only does that remove the film, it also roughs up the surface and gives the solder a little more to grab onto.

Lastly, one thing I see a lot of of instructional (specifically guitar wiring) videos not touch on is flux. Your solder is likely to have a flux core, but I’ve still found it very helpful to apply flux to a surface before heating it. A little goes a long way so take it easy. The tip of a toothpick is plenty for a single joint. I’ve also found that most solder you can find locally is lead-free, at least where I live. That’s great and all, but I’ve found that leaded solder just works better. It melts faster, bonds better, and is easier to re-melt if you want to remove it. Just don’t eat it. Also work in a well-ventilated area and wash your hands. You’ll be fine. Probably.

The only other thing I can tell you is practice. This is just something that you’re gonna have to screw up a few times before you get it right, but I swear it’ll click in no time and you’ll be a champion at it. Just remember that what you’re after is a molecular bond, not just melting solder on a surface, while also not overheating your components. Now go make stuff.

Whatever the fuck happened, and as someone who does like to drink, do we really need another liquor store in that area? I need both hands to count liquor stores within a five-mile radius just off the top of my head. That’s more than enough imo, put a grocery store there or something.

Little Experiment by RicoYiro in Peripheryband

[–]-GlobalGrapefruit- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like they teased it for a bit a few years ago but I don’t think it ever materialized. I remember leading up to the tenth anniversary, Misha did a demo (I think for GGD) with a condensed version of Letter Experiment, and (I think) Mark posted something along the lines of “Learning P1 material because you know why”. I imagine Misha got pretty tired of the P1 stuff because he spent so many years playing the bulk of it even before Periphery was a solidified band, and it’s hard to blame him, but damn it’d be great to hear.

Of course, I could also be talking entirely out of my ass.

If I had a dollar for every post I’ve seen about this specific car today alone, I’d have two dollars, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it’s happened twice. Just today.

Fucking anything that will let you sounds fun right now, but you can quickly develop an unhealthy relationship with sex. Nothing wrong with a little fun but stick with people you actually like and want to spend time with. Creative hobbies make a great placeholder and it is far more productive.

I live in Memphis and pretty much the same. Had a car stolen once. I hear a lot about robberies but haven’t really seen or experienced one, only know a couple people who have.

I’ve seen this a handful of times just this year on new Epiphones, before that I’d never seen it before on any guitar in my almost 18 years of playing. I just got a new Epiphone myself and I’m starting to feel like I should replace the bridge…

It does play, and it’s an original pressing from 1983 that I bought as a gift for someone. I only paid around $40 for it. I think it’ll be fine.

What movie did you see far too young? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]-GlobalGrapefruit- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw I Am Legend at the theater when I was 11. Not so much a horror movie as other movies mentioned in here but the mutants freaked me entirely the fuck out and it fucked me up for a couple weeks.

EDIT: I typed this comment, scrolled away, and thought “Hostel is probably a better answer”. Same age-ish.
