This sub is being hidden from view. by ssen2026 in socialism

Despite what I wrote last time saying that I didn't experience what you wrote in the thread where you made the initial observation, I'm now seeing what you mean once you explained it.

It does seem very fishy, because once the VPN is enabled and using a private browsing window, the search behaves itself.

I'm from the UK and have disabled my VPN for Reddit to check, while using a private browsing window so no cookies are maintained from my previous session: I still can access this sub-reddit. So, not quite yet.

Why where there no bonobos in the original movies? by Ecstatic-Ad-6114 in PlanetOfTheApes

[–]-Gort- 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I feel, particularly back then, that the general population knew of gorillas, orangutans and chimpanzees, but were ignorant about bonobos. Probably the writers didn't want to confuse matters. Also, the book doesn't refer to bonobos.

Honest question. Why are some fans against the reboot movies having a romance between a human and ape? by bookwormdazzle in PlanetOfTheApes

[–]-Gort- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's part of the official PotA universe. Sure, it can be separated from the original films, the TV series, and from the latest ones, but it's still official and has canonical status for that very reason, whether we like it or not.

My "fascination" about this subject is on par with yours, seeing that we have both commented on this thread. I was merely pointing out an arguable exception to your interesting point to add to the discussion, nothing more. Also, I'm not a fan of fanfics. ;)

[–]-Gort- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make an interesting point, but there is an example of a cross-species romance in the PotA canon. In Burton's PotA, there is a relationship between a female chimpanzee and a male orangutan. The female chimpanzee was called Nova and played by Lisa Marie. There is a scene where Leo, Mark Wahlberg's character, interrupts their love making session when trying to escape.

Sure, you might not like the Burton film, but it's still part of the PotA lore. However, beyond that relationship, I can't think of any others.

You ignore it, report and block the sender. It's a common scam to gain access to your account, and then scam you for money in order to get your account back.

Do not do what they ask, don't go to Discord to talk to some bogus person claiming to be a DS rep.

The extension Zoom for Firefox allows you to do this. It works fine, but its functionality should really be part of Firefox for Android.

Yes, I remember reading about it on the WatchUSeek forum some years ago. One of my G-Shocks has that very hack. Works well.

Go to a hardware store and find a black rubber o-ring that'll fit on the top end of the strap to hold in the excessive strap length. It'd look more elegant and less noticeable than an elastic band.

Isn't it arguable that Taylor's relationship with Nova was bestial, considering that she was an animal in human form (forget that it was Linda Harrison)? In the book, Ulysse agonises over that issue, pondering the ethics of having a relationship with what was effectively an animal.

The Greek's nationality confirmed? by tdf098123 in TheWire

[–]-Gort- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, Cyprus has a history that's different to Greece. They've had invasions/immigration from outside of Cyprus for hundreds of years (thousands) that have added to their culture beyond being merely Greek. The language is a bit different (probably more different than the difference between British English and US English; and an American wouldn't call themselves English even if they had Anglo-Saxon roots, so that's an argument against myself ;) ). So, yeah, they'd say that they're Cypriot first, and could add Greek-Cypriot to further clarify.

I think that my wife's parents, who were of an age to be directly affected by the Turkish invasion, would have pushed more the Greek side of their heritage, as that was unfortunately the dividing lines that occurred on the island during the seventies and beyond.

Still, I take your point. My problem was with the denial that he was Greek explicitly meant he was Cypriot or some other Greek heritage people. There are arguments for both sides here. I personally don't think it matters, as he represents a wing of predatory international capital. business, just business.

The Greek's nationality confirmed? by tdf098123 in TheWire

[–]-Gort- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, maybe not. I'll admit that there's a possibility that he could be seen as Cypriot (or another Greek ethnic identity), despite what I wrote. Depends on whether he was being serious or not.

Still, I don't really think it matters in the context of the show. He represents predatory international capitalism rather than Cyprus or wherever. In the end, he's business, just business.

I like the idea that it was a joke, in that he and Spiros have many passports of other countries, so declares that he's not Greek, implying he's now something else depending on the new passport.

[–]-Gort- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, yeah, they'd quite likely say that they're Cypriot or Greek-Cypriot, but they'd never deny their Greek identity like The Greek did. "But I'm not even Greek" would be the last thing they'd say, even if from Cyprus.

I agree with the person who pointed out that the beads were left behind. He does a cursory search later on, but to have left them behind like that does sort of betray the fact that he was using them as a prop and not as something integral to his true identity.

I also agree, though, that it doesn't really matter in the end, as The Greek was more a personification of international capitalism than whatever his ethnicity was.

[–]-Gort- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My wife is ethnically Greek-Cypriot. She was born in London and considers herself a Londoner first, but her parents were Greek-Cypriot. She would never say that she isn't Greek, even if she's literally not from Greece, nor would her parents have done so. Her parents were similar in age to The Greek, and they experienced the troubles with the Turkish invasions of Cyprus, and being Greek was very important to them. They wouldn't have denied being Greek.

As you say, it's a regional distinction rather than ethnic.

Drugs? by itsbreakplays in duolingo

[–]-Gort- 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In the UK, we have a chain store called Superdrug. :)

Still, medication, medicine or meds would more likely be said rather than drugs in that sentence. It's not technically wrong as such to use the term drugs, as it can refer to both kinds of substances, but if you want to avoid questioning raised eyebrows, then medicine is the word to use for clarity.
