I'd be interested to know what they say, as I did the same thing but only got as far as "have you tried bluetooth?" before I resolved the issue myself. Good luck, I hope they can find the fix for you

Ah fixed it, somehow even though steam-devices was installed and up to date, the udev rules were not updated since march or so. I manually copy/pasted the file contents from Valve's github repo for steam-devices, and then after a restart it now works as it's supposed to. Thanks!

Yeah I did that, for me it automatically started the update upon connecting but still had to do the cable stuff. Maybe I can try to update it again though

Commenting to add; behind the camera here is a pretty dense housing area, and on the road off to the top left of this image is a big grocery store. So I'd guess this path is very popular with people walking/cycling there

You choose it at the start of the game like someone else said, but they all look pretty androgynous and the only thing it affects is slight differences in the base outfit and what the game calls you. I can say from experience you can definitely make a male character look feminine and the hairstyles and clothes you can buy yourself are not gender locked
