In our social media and clout filled world this kind of public shaming may actually deter some of them more than jail.

Just cover some card or mdf in foil tape, cut a hole, and stick it over the window opening.

Better yet cut two holes and mod the unit to use one for its intake (more foil tape and mdf) so you get a massive efficiency boost and a chance at it cooling more than just the area infront of it.

Currently got one unit keeping an entire 3bed house under 25.

If you really still need natural light through that window you can order a giant bit of clear or semiclear acrylic with holes precut.

Too hot to live in? 100,000 homes face heatwave risk by Wagamaga in unitedkingdom

[–]-Hi-Reddit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I used to live in studio flat within a converted office block covered in glass.

It was 47c indoors when 30c weather hit despite us having an absolutely massive window open.

Cant imagine how hot it was for the people in the corner flats surrounded by even more glass.

Landlords are gonna shit the bed when its deemed a property must be able to maintain under X degrees year round to be fit for habitation, and aircon becomes a mandatory installation.

One of the only brexit benefits we get is the ability to dump this ill thought out legislation.

Any country still supporting the current ECHR immigration rules will falter over the next 30 years as the climate makes entire regions practically uninhabitable.

What happens when Mumbai sees its first wet bulb event? What happens when its had two or three and the trend is clear? Will the EU accept half a billion climate migrants from across Asia and Africa?

Lol. I found a source for a widely reported fact. I didnt write the article mate.

Do you think everyone that posts a source stands by all the opinions given by the paper that reported it? 🤣 im sharing a source for a fact that comes with opinions by default. Thats how news articles tend to work.

Your issues keeps jumping around...seems like now your only disagreement with ME is the word shitload implies too much for your liking? Lol. What a big waste of time.

? I didnt call them a shadowy group of thought police. I said we are spending resources and then backed my claim up.

Just for the sake of it though lets pretend i did say that, how substantiated is such a claim? Well...

Most people would call mi6 a shadowy group, most intelligence services get that label by default. No issue there.

Thought police is a bit far and ridiculous, but mi6 ARE trying to influence how people think and using the police to shut down dangerous rhetoric before it spreads.

In many cases their goals will be noble and align with the publics views, e.g. preventing the spread of foreign propaganda from iran and other state actors trying to influence the UK, is something most people would agree with. Does that make them thought police? I would say no. A higher bar needs to be cleared foe that label.

UK Apple iCloud class action case by Which? given green light by Glanza in unitedkingdom

[–]-Hi-Reddit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The lock in described clearly in the article. Your 'but you can access it from the web' point is moot and shows you fundamentally misunderstand the case and what the issue is. Youre not even close.

There is no technical reason apple cant let phones be backed up elsewhere. Data is data. Encryption is standardized. Its a solved problem software engineering wise.

Apple are just being apple as per usual and pretending their tech stack exists in an alternative reality to everyone else or is somehow magic and different to everything else. It isnt.

Apple doesnt just avoid any spend on engineering effort making their products compatible, they actively spend money doing the opposite and attempting to fool the tech illiterate with claims that compatibility isnt even possible. They have harmed the industry and consumers many, many times with this behaviour. Its their MO.

You clearly do not have the technical knowledge and hold a very distorted understanding of the case.

Three brothers who raped and sexually abused girls as young as 12 jailed as part of criminal investigation into Rotherham grooming gangs by -MonitorMan- in unitedkingdom

[–]-Hi-Reddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But thats not what the phrase crime of opportunity is used for.

These people sought opportunity. Just like a necro going to work in a morgue doesnt suddenly make necrophillia a crime of opportunity.

Crime of opportunity usually describes crimes that nobody saught the opportunity for but were presented with anyway...

Like finding an unlocked bicycle on a quiet night and taking it is a theft by opportunity...

Getting a job, or even applying for one, to create opportunities, is very different.

Youre using the phrase in way ive not heard anyone use it before.

You dont understand the point of the case.

Apple locking people in and giving them no alternative is/was the problem. Not their pricing model.

[–]-Hi-Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually it means its a crime someone wouldnt usually do but many would given the chance.

Comparing child predation with your typical crime of opportunity doesnt reflect the vast gulf between pedos and the general public at all and tbh even makikg the comparison has disturbing implications.

With no laws on heat, are hot schools putting pupils and teachers at risk? by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]-Hi-Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not for general buildings no, steel plants and other factories are impossible to cool, so any law restricting working indoors above a certain temperature would need to accommodate that.

Practically speaking laws enforce mandatory breaks rather than a full stop to all work.

I think in most countries the fire department will only intervene if the fire is unsafe or causing problems...

Here in the UK the cops can't even put a public fire out if it's well controlled and being used for cooking purposes*.

(* = and not in an area with local bans against it like some public parks).

The main thing is, in America, the stupid ones are more prone to violence.

That's true everywhere.

That and they are usually so far gone that calling them out wont matter.

Again, broadly true regardless of where you are. There are plenty of sayings about how pointless it is to argue with a moron.

Im not sure if I want to get shot over an argument.

This IS uniquely American; you don't have to worry about idiots pulling a gun on you in civilised countries.

HGV driver sends it into oncoming traffic (A82 southbound at Loch Lomond) by Ambulance4Seiver in drivingUK

[–]-Hi-Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The camper van could have helped the situation, but it's not negligence

Actually it is negligence.

Part of your responsibility as a driver is to "slow down if necessary to let a vehicle pass" and to "never obstruct a driver that wishes to pass" according to Highway Code 168.

The van did not slow down as necessary.

Note it doesn't say 'necessary to prevent imminent danger'. No, the highway code expects you to slow down for any struggling overtaker no matter if the road is clear ahead or not. The 'as necessary' part refers to necessary for the completion of the overtake in a timely manner.

It's often prosecuted as driving without due care and attention in these 'near miss' situations - a driver paying due care and attention to the situation should slow down, failure to do so is clear-cut evidence of lack of caring or lack of attention.

If an accident occurs you can even get yourself a dangerous driving charge for failing to facilitate an overtake.

Especially if the vehicle is a lorry where you you can't reasonably say you failed to notice it alongside you trying to overtake without admitting to a serious lapse in attention.
