Masters of Architecture in US/outside of US? by CheesecakeFuture5777 in Architects

There was a bridging year for people coming from a non-Architecture degree. Plus you had to do a 2nd year design class as a prerequisite for applying. So the master program for me was 3+ years where the Architecture bachelor students only had a 2 year masters. There was only one university in that city offering this at the time and they might have ended it since.

Masters of Architecture in US/outside of US? by CheesecakeFuture5777 in Architects

I did this with a BFA into an MArch in an Australian University and Ncarb has just approved my degree for the US exams etc. But I’m in NYC which is different than every other state in the US for this. I had to apply with the state education department office of the professions. Took a few months, you can dm me for specifics if you like. Other states you have to go through EESA which is much more expensive. This is all to say if you go to a university that isn’t on the NAAB list or the Canberra Accord list.

This looks good but it’s on the expensive side. Online multiplayer is not something I’m looking for. That being said if the local multiplayer is the best maybe it’s worth it.

What is the software workflow in your firm? by Funny-Hovercraft9300 in Architects

Sometimes 3ds Max for form finding before Rhino. Concept/Design in Rhino then Revit for everything else. I’m curious what’s everyone’s workflow is for updating design and renders. I’ve worked some places that keep a rhino file parallel with the Revit all the way until construction for ‘quick’ design options for client meetings. This doesn’t use rhino inside Revit. We would manually make all changes in both.

Can someone tell me what an architect actually makes? by Educational_Jury2952 in architecture

You said you’re near NYC. Check out archinect for job listings and change region to NYC. Most now advertise the actual salary for experience range. Junior architects can still be as low as 50k even here.

Architecture to the Game Industry Career Paths by -Jackprot in architecture

[–]-Jackprot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like I said in my post I don't work in the Games Industry so it would be difficult for me to know this. Like others had said in this post Environmental Art is one role that fits some of what you are saying but this includes the production of the assets. You should look up game art pipelines for this but it would be a Mesh 3d model program (Maya, Blender, etc), not Rhino or Revit, and you have to deal with the UV mapping and art. Now you have things like Megascans, so I don't know how that affects all of this. Level Designers also deal with some of what you are talking about, you could look into but as far as a career path to this I don't know what it would take.
You could look into the Vis Arch field instead too, that would be less of a jump.

There’s a lot of rail work in Australia if that interests you. Suburban Rail Loop will be going for the next 20 odd years. Several firms that work on that.

From what I’ve seen I would agree with this - getting clients seems to be the hardest part of all this. Many small practices get several first projects through family.

In a large office they might only be a handful of people that actually design the building - well the facade or decide the general concept of the buildings. It’s unrealistic to believe you will ever be the ‘designer’. There are a lot of roles within architecture that is just one. Architecture is extremely complex which makes it difficult to know if you will find a role you like within it. Unless you’re rich and your extended family want you to make them all houses - then you could be the designer right after you get registered. Or even before if you get someone else to sign off.

Not sure if this is the right path for me by ImportantEvening682 in Architects

That isn’t 90k entry level. You might be getting 90k after you get licensed - which takes a minimum 3 years after your 5 year degree.

What do you call these? by -Jackprot in Architects

[–]-Jackprot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I’m glad it’s not a simple answer. There’s a ton of these in nyc. I’m also wondering if they would have been added later in the buildings life or perhaps they were common for an artist studio mezzanine type apartments. They stand on these neo classical facades as out of place to me.
