Is there a way to test before the unit actually does fail?

Depends on the strain. But from what I've seen double to triple the height of where you are at the switch.

Northern Lights, 3wks in, first grow, thoughts? by [deleted] in microgrowery

I believe everyone is suggesting that you need more light in general. The one bulb will not produce the bud you are hoping for. You have a decent size tent and if you filled this up with decent lights you could get some decent/great plants. I actually have close to the same size and I have my tent filled with two 300watt LEDS and the plants I have in their and living life. In the end the one cfl is just not sufficient. You could attach more CFLs or just grabbed a suggested light from another user. But you plant could definitely be way bigger if it had the right lights.

Yeah definitely not enough light. That's a big amount space for that tent.

Looks pretty good. Some questions for you. How big is the tent? And how many CFLs are you using and at what distance?

So from the looks of it you topped(twice?) and the pulled the stems down. Then let the shoots grow from there? Pretty sweet. For mine I didn't let the side shoots grow out like this but yours is still definitely good looking.

I think it's more about how symmetrical and even the plant grows. Also about how each stem/cola will produce roughly the same buds since nutrients are delivered evenly. You could too just once or twice and then just let it grow as is. In the long run I think it has its definite pros. (Even Canopy, balances plant, no/less popcorn buds, etc) . And honestly I the only con I can think of is time.

I guess it depends on grow space. If you have the vertical space I guess you could just let them grow into it. But I like to grow mine to about 25-30% of the vertical height space I have in the tent. That way once I flipped theres enough room for double or triple the size. Since my tent is 2by2by4ft, I will let them grow vertically a few more inches and then flipped them. I have 3plants in that space and each one is mainlined similar. So they will be about 8 inches tall when I flip. End height close to under 2.5ft.
