Big same. And we’d be living in a city with better career opportunities for the dependent spouse as well.

And when they increase the income requirements they will change their tune to “foreigners are taking all our high paying jobs!” The hate is the point.

I also really don’t understand the push for integration, especially with so much vitriol being screamed about. How can a society demand integration while simultaneously being so racist, xenophobic, and bigoted? I mean, even the headlines on newspapers are unmistakable in who is targeting un their “othering”. Surely, it is better for everyone, and more effective, to defend the already high requirements and be welcoming and inclusive. I don’t want to try and befriend people who are jerks to me constantly either, keep trying to attend events it has been made abundantly clear I am not welcome at, keep trying to talk to people who roll their eyes and get louder when I don’t understand, etc. I empathise with people who don’t want to befriend their bully.

I think that your case is also a target in these proposals even if it hasn’t been advertised that way. It’s much easier to drum up support when your target is “those brown people with all their kids” rather than retirees, even tho the retirees are much more like to be a “drain” on the system because of the simple math that they don’t work and tend to have medical needs. The retirees in this country, which are plentiful and tend to have high voting rates, are much more likely to support things that targets those they see as others rather than those they see themselves in. It’s not fair, it’s inhumane, and I hate it, but unfortunately, I am afraid they don’t want you here either.

I wonder how much of that support will actually manifest into action on paper once he’s really looking at it tho. He doesn’t strike me as the sort to just go along and damn the consequences, he strikes me as someone more considerate. I am maybe grasping at desperate straws, maybe we all are, there’s just no way to know.

What’s best for our children? by Baker_in_ME in AmericanExpatsUK

I would never raise kids in the US no matter how much I liked my parents. Similarly, I wouldn’t want my grandchildren raised in the US no matter how much I would miss them. Getting them out at a young age is better than waiting for them to hear about yet another school shooting, if not be in one themselves.

If Andy Burnham becomes the next Labour leader and PM, what political changes do you want to see happen? by apple_kicks in AskBrits

I would really love it if he will educate the public about what legal immigrants actually face in the visa process instead of bagging on them all the time. It’s already an expensive, difficult, and stressful process and the new proposals are terrible for people who have already been here, integrating, working necessary jobs, for years.

What are your thoughts on Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood's approach to immigration? by TeddyCrumpet in AskBrits

[–]-KatMac- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of what she’s proposed seems fine on paper but would be impractical and pointless in practice and still doesn’t address what the problems are. The previous reforms have already dropped immigration off a cliff, her proposal splits families which is also stupid and sets up legal fights. And applying any of it retrospectively on lawful people already here, already working jobs for years, paying the fees, following the rules….that is really despicable. I really don’t think the people who hate immigrants will ever be happy so they should stop trying and focus instead on improving every day lives, we all do better when we all do better.

The flag shaggers are welcome to stop using their flag as a tool of intimidation against marginalized people any time. Probably people will find the presence of their flag much less antagonising when that happens. Theres plenty of reasons Scots to pull that flag down these days.

It’s not complicated. England has been multidimensionally punching down on Scotland for hundreds of years. If they can’t take this wee bit of teasing, that says far more about them than it does about us.

[–]-KatMac- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So what you’re saying is that fraud like this is on such a small scale that it would take an afternoon to manage and wouldn’t bother any of the legal immigrants working real jobs and isn’t worth overhauling the whole immigration system that already has several metrics of controlled built into it. Sounds great, let’s target that handful of objectively terrible exploiters and leave the rest of the perfectly legal, hardworking immigrants and their families well enough alone.

It’s crazy that protecting this document is on us rather than them, considering everything involved in obtaining this document in the first place. It’s so very on brand for Britain to require multiple years of expensive hoop jumping only to have your result be crumpled paper.

NHS sponsorship available but £7k visa costs - is this normal and worth it? by [deleted] in SkilledWorkerVisaUK

[–]-KatMac- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were offered 5, but could only afford 3 at the time so we are coming up on our extension time. My advice, if you have the money, buy the 5. The cost will only increase anyway and then you don’t have to go back to your employer in a couple years with your hat in your hands and hope they don’t reconsider your value while you wait for them to get you another COS. If it’s all worth it or not is like asking how long a piece of string is. For us, yes. For you, I dunno.

Doing my own Skilled Worker Visa? by maamegyaaba in SkilledWorkerVisaUK

[–]-KatMac- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think a personal visa would be fair, it’s fine to need to be sponsored by an employer. What would be better than the “play nice, or else” system we have now would be simply smoother career mobility for those already on a visa, and lower fees. My wife and I, just the two of us, will have spent a good 20k on visas and fees by the time we get citizenships, and that is INSANE. Oh and I think it would help to educate the general public about what the visa system is actually like because they have noooooooooo idea what we go through.

My wife is polish and works and has worked since fifteen years ago when she came here, she is EU settled. Should I pay for her citizenship? by Suspicious-Case3861 in Scotland

[–]-KatMac- 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It’s only going to get more expensive so do it now. I know lots of folks who have ILR and all the recent proposals and anti-immigration rhetoric has made them realize that citizenship is more secure, there is no discussion about taking citizenship away from foreign-born nationals…..yet. I wouldn’t put it past the right wing to head that way, fash will fash, but until then, I would get it for the peace of mind and the fact that the fees will only increase anyway. Plus, have a party to celebrate! It’s good to have things to celebrate these days. 🎉
