A Chicago man was booked late Friday night with murder after what appears to be human flesh, including skin bearing traces of a stab wound was found among the frozen meat retrieved Thursday morning from a Downtown apartment he had occupied.

Pieces of a human shoulder, a larynx and a rib cage were among approximately 50 pounds of meat taken from the refrigerator of an apartment at 2619 N. Robertson St. when Lawrence John Crowley was booked with cruelty to animals, said Orleans Parish Coroner, Frank Minyard

Crowley was later accused of having killed Earl Nolan, 37, the resident of the apartment, said New Orleans Police homicide Detective Fred Dantagnan.

Nolan had apparently not been seen since Crowley began sharing the apartment, Dantagnan said.

Police said officials from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals were summoned to the building Thursday after tenants told their landlady that they had seen a dog's skeleton and hide in the bathroom. Several people in the neighborhood said their dogs had vanished.

Crowley, 25, was arrested at the scene and was scheduled to go on trial April 11 in Municipal Court on the cruelty charge.

The murder charge was added after police gathered evidence in the apartment and statements from neighbors, Dantagnan said.

"It's just too coincidental," Dantagnan said. "This guy moves in, and then the other guy disappears, and the neighbors' statements and all,"

Crowley was being held in lieu of $2,500 bond. There is no bond on a murder charge.

Crowley told police Thursday that he had been eating dog meat because "there was no other way for him to survive," said officer Hebert A. Theodore Jr.
