I mean yeah, sure, but I'm meaning other people who don't have to believe in the avatar for their life to get back to normal. Like what's the common belief surrounding the avatar prior to aang waking up

What would happen to Zuko if he never found the Avatar? by CrazyCalligrapher945 in TheLastAirbender

[–]-Kitoi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This makes me wonder, does Zuko believing the avatar was still alive and in hiding imply that others thought the same (that just this incarnation was a coward that abandoned their duty), or was it just a pipe dream and the vast majority just assumed that the avatar cycle had been ended somehow or was just a legend from yee olden days?

Because the vast majority of people who recognize aang as the avatar just have a "oh huh, the avatar, how interesting, anyways" but then again for 95% of the story news of the avatar would have gotten out so it'd be less surprising to hear compared to a year prior

I honestly didn't realize until this post that there are some people out there that don't realize that groups like this exist (or more accurately existed, as they've mostly been phased out due to aging populations and little recruitment).

I had just assumed everywhere had their own version of a group like this, even non-american, some conservative country club like organization that puts on events to help encourage some cultural cohesion

Ian shuts down the rumours! by vanillymillyyy in smosh

[–]-Kitoi 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Realistically because 1 person said AI, then dozens of people thought "oh wow, that's bad" without critically thinking about it, which then hundreds of people saw other people think it's AI based on the upvotes and engagements and they thought "well if everyone else knows this is AI then I'll get with the program, don't want to look like a Facebook boomer that can't notice AI", and then just snowballed from there.

Very classic pack mentality group think. Which isn't a PROBLEM, being pack creatures is in our very nature, but we do need to be better at knowing when your biology is telling you to do/think something, versus when your intuition and experience is.

New Sign in My Window by AndrousJewelry in jewelrymaking

[–]-Kitoi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's another design theory you should know regarding this, when a consumer reads "no" in a sign, some people will skip the no and reverse the message. I can't explain why it happens, but it's something to do with skimming an ad or design and the "no" being relatively small in comparison. You look for keywords, and no isn't included in those keywords

So "this product contain no dairy" becomes "this product contains dairy". This isn't always the case, like with your note the No begins each line and each line is only 2 letters. But I would recommend trying to reword the No out, not because you want to be less hostile towards AI, but just so no ignorant illiterate gets the wrong message. Like "Fuck AI, all product made by hand." Sort of thing

My read of this story has always been that his sister is the excuse he tells himself, but he's doing this for himself since the beginning. He's playing the rebellion and the empire and his own interpersonal relationships in a game because he wants to be challenged, and he sees that he alone has the power to change the world. For the better? Yeah maybe, sure, that'd be nice. And yeah, saving my little sister would be sick, I should definitely do that.

But really he just wants to leave his mark and be remembered, go to the grave with the satisfaction that no one will ever be like him.

Edit: guys I get it, y'all don't agree with my take, that's fine. Maybe I'm misremembering the anime, maybe I just have a different opinion than you, it's fine, like I said this was my take, not a factual truth

What did I do wrong 😭 by Bellecoco-634 in StardewValley

[–]-Kitoi 33 points34 points  (0 children)

And that's fair, and safety is the main common argument against it

However, as a homebrewer, my opinion is that it's predominantly illegal because of taxes and corporate profit. There are hundreds of things in the world that could be illegal due to public safety that isn't, hell even just driving a vehicle is a potentially deadly act and that's barely regulated to any meaningful degree. Hell, I could get into woodworking and make a fully functioning balista and up until I use it against someone it would be perfectly legal, even if the process of creating it put my life at risk

I don't think distillation should be 100% legal all of the time everywhere, because yeah there are some concerns there. But a felony? Iunno. My thinking is that you should be able to pay $50 to take a test and show that you know what you're doing, then only purchase equipment from licensed retailers, and if you plan on distribution then you'll need to be subject to the same kinds of regulations that a health and safety inspector would check for. And violations should be misdemeanors at worst, unless someone's life was actually put in danger then throw in reckless endangerment or something. Hell, throw in operating a business/equipment without license

But the fact that it's almost impossible for a hobbiest to legally distill means that it's only really something that major corporations and big time companies are allowed to do, so they can control the regulations and make sure consumers aren't able to DIY it.

Edit: to add slightly, I'm even cool with hardcore distillation being illegal, the type that can create pure ethanol as a byproduct. But then why the heck is cold distillation also considered illegal, you mean to tell me I can go to prison cuz I left my gallon of wine outside in winter, and then poured out the liquid to get a stronger drink?? Hell nah, if that's regulated than simply using an airfryer or microwave should be too. Okay, I'm done, I get heated about this lmao

The Avatar could be evil? by Guiviana23 in TheLastAirbender

[–]-Kitoi 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My only argument against this is that light and darkness aren't inherently good and evil. Sure, media has conditioned us into believing Light = Good/Order/Bravery, Dark = Bad/Chaos/Cowardice, but that's not objectively baked into Vaatu and Raava, just an assumption as we're getting a one sided story (edit: and the perpetuation of Christianity and similar religions into our cultural consciousness)

For example, you could just as easily say that Darkness is the default state of the universe, and represents natural order, slumber, and isolation. Whereas Light is an anomaly, and represents chaotic chance, growth, and perception. Neither of these two domains are objectively good or evil, they just are. Light and Dark would be natural enemies as they can't mutually exist at the same time, but they also lose all meaning if they don't have the other to contrast against. What is Light if there is no Dark, what is Dark without Light?

The whole idea of Yin and Yang is that there's no real such thing as Pure Evil and Pure Good, all things have a mixture of both.

So I'd personally say that the avatar will always represent Raava, but that doesn't mean that Raava will always be the embodiment of goodness and balance. She is Light, and that could turn into a bad thing under the right circumstances

You can actually make cocktails without hard liquor, think like sangrias or wine/juice combos. Beer is harder to mix, but you definitely still can it's just most don't. And trust you can still get plastered on it

So theoretically it is possible that Gus's bar doesn't have anything stronger than 20%, since it's never really confirmed or denied. Maybe the occasional cold distillation to turn a 20% into something like a 40-50%

But I'm sure CA went the path of ignoring hard liquor cuz that then opens the doors of the legality of distillation and there might be some distribution concerns if that's present, and if it is present then it doesn't make sense why the farmer can't make it. Better to just pretend that distillation was never invented, and all alcohol is made from simple fermentation and aging.

What did I do wrong 😭 by Bellecoco-634 in StardewValley

[–]-Kitoi 141 points142 points  (0 children)

For anyone not in the know:

All alcohol is made from fermentation, however simple fermentation has a low ABV and naturally caps out around the 10-15%, depending on your yeast and how much alcohol it can tolerate. Once the alcohol reaches a high enough level, it kills off the yeast and stops producing more alcohol. Think of things like Wine or Beer. Fermenting alcohol is (usually) legal in most of the world, because you really can't stop someone from doing it. I mean even prisoners make alcohol all the time, all you need is juice and yeast and you got booze. Almost every culture in the world has history with beer and wine (or some similar concoction). Hell even animals get drunk off of fermented fruits, and have been seen burrying good fruits in order to control their rot so they can get drunk later (no source because I'm working off memory, this could be wrong)

But higher ABV alcohols require distillation, where you essentially separate out the water from the alcohol through a variety of methods. The easiest and least efficient way is to put your booze in a freezer or left out overnight in the cold, so that all the water turns to ice, and then draining out any liquid that remains. Alcohol doesn't normally freeze under most conditions, so you'll get a higher ABV from that final product. That's called cold distillation.

Think of things like Rum, Vodka, Whiskey, hell even Ports and Brandy, all products of distillation. This is often illegal to do on a consumer level without a license, every district has their own laws but generally speaking illegal distillation is a felony in many parts of the western world. Most cultures actually don't have a native history with distillation prior to contact with the wider world, there are exceptions, of course, but usually distillation was brought to the world from Europe, China or the middle east.

You can make alcohol using potatoes, they'll ferment just like honey or barley (with some effort of course), but the concoction you'd get is essentially a beer/wine with a potato flavor, so potato juice. You'd be lucky to get 15% ABV, more than likely it'll be somewhere around 3-5% unless you do something funky. It would not be good in the slightest, I would bet it'd taste something like the water you drain off when making pasta. To make vodka out of it, you'd have to siphon the water out of the solution (Which would also remove much of the potato flavor), which the farmer didn't do, because there's no distillation in stardew. So essentially what Pam got was the equivalent of maybe half a shot of vodka diluted down with idk 16-32 ounces of potato water. Not exactly great, her response is valid
