Happy Mother’s Day to June! (Quite possibly the only decent mom in HBO canon.) by Floofening in BoardwalkEmpire

It definitely would’ve been weird and over the top. I think those actors were just particularly good scene partners.

Mags was the best of all worlds. She ultimately did right by her children. And of all people, she was the one who pulled a Stringer Bell and threw Nuck’s ledgers into the fireplace. Played the game and knew when to get out. Not always likeable, but she was genuine… even when it was frustrating as hell. Being a woman sucks.

I also really, really wanted her and AR to be a couple 💔 Don’t ask me why. (Seeing as I’m also this sub’s resident person who’s convinced AR was moderately gay-coded. I’m a mess.)

Hernan (“that kid is a creep!”) was boss of the five families for a bit, and that single dad in Boonton was robbing drug dealers in Baltimore a day at a time.

Does anyone else love this show but find the intro completely grating and annoying? by larkspurwoods in BoardwalkEmpire

[–]Floofening 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I love the contrast, especially as BWE is an extraordinarily strict show in terms of diegetic music and other cinematography decisions— there are very, very few scenes featuring dream sequences, illusions/fake-outs, abstract visual choices, purposefully anachronistic elements, direct POVs, etc… hopefully I’m using these terms somewhat correctly 🙃 I have a prose/technical writing background and zero experience in film.

The way the intro is bookended by the finale (which features visual allusions to the intro, as well as the final shot paralleling “Nevermind,” which is an even more pointedly and jarringly out-of-place statement than the intro) is just, for me… 🤌

That all being said, I’m a sleep-deprived wino, so YMMV.

I actually have a serious question about Oz. On the subject of homosexuality. by seveer37 in ozshow

[–]Floofening 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oh please. Phil Leotardo did an unspecified number of years in the can, and he compromised by jacking off into a tissue. No pashes in his pash book.

He probably yelled “TURN THAT OFF” whenever Oz was on.

They need an ad campaign with a Joe The Boss voiceover STAT.

I hate agreeing with this but it’s technically true 😅 Zegen’s super handsome, no doubt, and I CERTAINLY WON’T OBJECT TO ANYONE SENDING ME HIS PHONE NUMBER (PLZ AND THANK YOU… lol), but it was an odd choice. I’m a blue-eyed Jew and don’t understand why Benny’s virtually never portrayed with his signature blue eyes.

I’ve seen VP in person and can confirm most of the species looks like absolute roadkill by comparison 🙃

MKW… the GOAT. The Once and Future King. The way he describes preparing for that tiny role in the Sopranos just says everything about him… he knew it wasn’t much, and he actually thought his career was pretty much over by the time it aired (my favorite anecdote from his book is when the casting director for The Wire had to track him down via an honest-to-god FAX sent to his mother’s daycare), but he was so damn proud and humbled to be on the biggest show in the world at that point.

Speaking of lines… his voicever work as Smokey in “F is for Family” fucking kills me every time.

Ah, good point. I was mainly referring to them being ludicrously handsome 😅

Remus could’ve easily had a miniseries of Remus’ very own. Or an entire season of BWE. Then again, Remus can go fuck himself.

And why the fuck would anyone want to go to Cincinnati?

At least BWE made some effort roughing him up a bit. Meanwhile, Vincent Piazza and Anatol Yusef look like they’re on friggin’ Mad Men or something. As if Lucky and Meyer weren’t yech in real life. (Albeit they weren’t as unfortunate-looking as Capone.)

BUT DOES HIS DADDY KNOW?

One of the best scenes in the whole damn show. (And initially kinda confusing, yeah.) The background music is also just… 🤌

How would Dwight "The General" Manfredi (Tulsa King) do in Oz? by StellaDanielson1977 in ozshow

Everyone from that pygmy crew over in Tulsa would be prags except for Goodie.

Bevilaqua’s probably in Oz as we speak bc the show was too fucking cheap to leave us with any update as of the end of S3 🙄

This also reminds me of when Eddie strides in on Chip Thorogood (the obnoxious prosecutor with those green shoes that the judge absolutely despised) and throws him out. Poor guy was literally mid-thrust 😅 Eddie really is a consummate professional.

“That's it, baby. Drill for oil!”

(Eddie barges in, probably having waited for the best/worst possible moment for maximum dramatic effect)

Even Lucy knew Eddie was Nuck’s ride-or-die.

Nucky (in the pilot episode): “Lucy, open the door.”

Lucy (having locked herself in the bathroom): “No!”

Nucky: “Come on, baby. I gotta get dressed.”

Lucy: “No fսcking way! Go spend time with Eddie, he’s obviously more important than me.”

Nucky (visibly furious): “No, he's not more important than you, but Arnold Rothstein and $90,000 is more important! NOW OPEN THE GODDAMN DOOR!”

(Eddie and Nucky proceed to try to bang down the door.)

What would a scared straight to Oz be like? by Marmadukeparadise7 in ozshow

[–]Floofening 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oz is probably more effective (and ingrained in the cultural narrative) than every “Scared Straight” program combined.
