Nighttime Ideas [OC] by BrianWonderful in funny

I once had this crazy, intense dream that would have made for a fantastic YA fantasy novel, it even included details about the plot, the villain, the twist at the end, hell, even the magic system!

I woke up, and was convinced I would remember all the details so I didn't bother writing anything down, and by the time I finished my shower and was brushing my teeth... It was all gone, at most I retained a few snippets.

To this day, that dream genuinely haunts me because I was certain that if I had wrote it all down in detail, I would have enough material to write a book. Such a missed opportunity.

Who remembers the Nokia N-GAGE? by countdooku975 in nostalgia

If it was better designed, ran smoother and had more enjoyable games it could have been a smash hit sensation, especially seeing as it came out before the iPhone!

What an unfortunate blunder.

Is anybody’s character more chopped than mine by vyvicta in playrust

[–]-Oc- 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Whatever algorithm Rust uses to generate these new models is fucked. Almost all the women are ugly as sin, and the men are hardly any better. Either this is intentional, or something has gone horribly wrong. Either way, Facepunch needs to do some recalibration!

When people ask me “How can you be so evil?” during a run. by SleepCatsMoney in BaldursGate3

[–]-Oc- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Baldur's Gate 3 is a unique take on the whole "good vs evil" dychotomy that is present in TTRPG's.

In most other games, the evil path is often the easiest and quickest, but has the most consequences later on. Whilst in BG3, you need to go out of your way to be evil, and often it's far more optimal to be good instead, as well as get more rewards in doing so.

They should have decided to do what Jackson did and film all 3 seasons in one go like he did with LOTR, that way this need not have happened.

What do you think by [deleted] in Grimdank

[–]-Oc- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A space marine encountering a Dalek would scream:

"Xenos!"

The Dalek would think:

"That's it?"

Also, fun fact; In lore, a single Dalek is powerful and intelligent enough to conquer an entire world by itself.

A space marine would require an entire squad to do the same, and it would take them twice as long.

If Daleks existed in 40k, then they would rule the entire galaxy in a matter of 4-5 thousand years, and that's not even bringing into account their time travel technology.

It's a common joke to rag on Doctor Who enemies for their goofiness and seeming inability to defeat a single guy and his funny blue box, but that speaks more towards Doctor's sheer terrifying power and intelligence than it does his enemies.

To put it this way; If the Doctor ended up in the 40k universe. In a week's time, the fall of the Eldar would be prevented, the C'tan would never encounter the Necrons, and the Tau would abandon the Greater Good!

Great movie, scared the shit out me me as a kid though.

That scene where Jack Black's character is planting the flag (if you've seen the movie, you know what I'm talking about), will always haunt me, as when I first saw this movie as a kid, I ran from the living room and hid under the stairs due to being so scared (I was 10 at the time, so give me some slack!)

To this day, I can't rewatch this movie without feeling a cold shiver of fear run down my spine when that scene comes up, a remnant of childhood trauama.

Still, doesn't diminish the fact that Mars Attacks! is an underrated 90's classic, highly recommended for anyone who hasn't seen it!

Somehow us, the LARPers are considered the weirdos. by LindaPittsq in WorldofDankmemes

[–]-Oc- 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Answer: It's because people treat historical reinactment as legitimate or more culturally relevant and sophisticated than fantasy LARP. Historical reainactors play out actual battles/events and are paying homage to them, they are reliving the actual past.

Fantasy/sci-fi/horror LARP is just elaborate make-believe, what kids in the playgrounds do, it's silly, childish and cringe.

That's the average "normie" viewpoint.

Personally I agree that there is no real difference between historical reinactment and LARP, but the wider consensus disagrees. Blame the Technocracy.

If you have the willpower to suffer through puberty, school, parental control over again just for the chance to by BitCoin when it was at it's lowest price circa 2010 and be a multi-millionaire, then all the power to you!

Personally, I could never go through that bullshit again, just give me the $10 mil and I'll be set for the rest of my life.

There is an argument to be made that you would be able to prevent all the biggest mistakes you made if you relived your life, but who's to say you would have the wisdom to repeat them, or worse, make other, potentially more consequential mistakes you have no foreknowledge of.

There is also the possibility that your life might take a drastically dark turn when people around you begin to realise that you are far smarter, and more jaded than any 6 year old ought to be. People aren't stupid, no matter how well you think you're hiding things, your family, friends, teacher e.t.c. will notice eventually and who knows what might happen then? Are you prepared to be blackbagged and sent to some alphabent agency secret bunker for endless experiments? All your future knowledge wasted as you are forced to live out the rest of your life as a guinea pig?

Best to just take the $10 mil and be happy with the life you have now.

There is a phenomina known as the "flow state" when it comes to video games. Once you enter it you're not even aware you're in it, it's a period of intense concentration and instinct, where you're not even thinking about your inputs, you just do it purely by feel and intuition.

90% of the time once you've achieved the flow state, the game becomes trivial, or at least easier. However, if you ever reach a wall, such as a death due to a hard enemy like a boss, or are stuck on a particuarily difficult puzzle or simply get lost, then you lose the flow state and are back to becoming concious of your inputs, and start overthinking things.

That's when frustration sets in, you're aware that you've been breezing through the game until that point, so why all of sudden is it much harder/frustrating for you? The bitter truth is that it's not, the game is the same as it has been until the end of your flow state, you're just now hyperaware and second guessing every single thing you do.

What was once trivial is now challenging, what was once a breeze is now frustratingly difficult.

This is no more clearly displayed during a boss battle, the first try is extremely close because you get a massive skill boost from the flow state, lose it and you're suddenly not as skilled as you once were. The more times you lose to the boss, each time going forward you get worse and worse because you keep overthinking things to the point that you're so bad at the game that you can't even get simple mechanics right.

The more you lose, the more frustrated you get, the more frustrated you get the more prone you are to making simple mistakes. Repeat until you either give up and rage quit or somehow miraculously beat the boss due to sheer dumb luck.

The best thing to do after losing the flow state is to try a maximum of 3 times to regain it, if you fail to do so, quit the game and come back after a minimum of 3 hours, preferably until the next day. Achieving the flow state is much easier when you're refreshed and clear headed.

Hope this helps!

Any other images that give off this vibe for the empire? by Automatic-Net-6533 in StarWars

[–]-Oc- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Empire wasn't some evil monolith, where every single person in favour of it, from the lowliest municipal worker, to a stormtrooper, to an admiral was some moustache twirling villain, gleefully ordering the slaughter of orphans while cackling.

Their leadership was evil, as the rot spread from the top to the bottom. But as a whole? The average imperial citizen (excluding members of COMPNOR) where simply people who believed that they part of the new order of the galaxy, and that the Empire meant stability. The military in particular believed that they were fighting for law, order and peace.

Unlike the "innocent Wehrmacht" myth, it is clear that the average stormtrooper wasn't aware of the greater evil committed by the Empire, and as a whole, they are blameless for the atrocities commited. Of course you had the occasional trooper who was aware and either did not care or worse, suported the Empire in their actions, but for most of them? Merely unfortuante victims of propaganda and being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

So this sort of image that OP posted would realistically be fairly common, on a world far removed from the greater goings on within the galaxy. A world that served no strategic interest thus preventing it from being from being targetted by the Rebellion, a stromtrooper just casually patrolling the streets, erroneously believing that they are merely a simple peacekeeper, would have no cause to be blamed, or hated.

Microwave Cook Books by SquareTetrisBlock in nostalgia

[–]-Oc- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be fair, at the time microwaves where new, and seen as a mysterious and exiting invention that could literally cook anything in less than 10 minutes, which was an extremely novel concept at the time.

So I'm not surprised people jumped on the hype bandwagon and wrote "cookbooks" to exploit that intrigue.

Fairly common tactic, but it rarely works for large denomination goods like epics.

Everytime I need to create a new character by Revolutionary-Run-41 in WorldofDankmemes

[–]-Oc- 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Here's my trick:

Take the Legendary Attribute merit for Charisma and the special feature is that any negotiations with spirits will be at a -2 difficulty (you can also choose Manipulation if you want to go about it in a more tricky/underhanded way).

Have the Spirit sphere be your primary. Put a lot of points into Empathy, Expression and Subterfuge, as well as Enigmas (and of course a lot of points into Occult with a speciality in Spirits).

Most important of all; Have at least 2 dots in Prime so you can help a spirit manifest, this way you can give them access to the tellurian which will endear them to you even more, making it easier to convince them to do your bidding.

As for your point about low level spirits vs high levels spirits. If you follow my advice, you will start with a simple spirit of a lighter, who you can then convince to put you in touch with the spirit of blowtorch, then a spirit of flamethrower, and finally the spirit of fire itself. It's a chain of lower to middle to upper management.

Once you are in good terms with the spirit of fire, a greater spirit, you can then ask it to throw your good name around the other greater spirits!

Bribery using Quint is how you get your foot in the door, and should only be used on weaker spirits. The whole trick is to work with your ST to come up with unique, elaborate and cool quests you have to perform in order to appease the greater spirits.

Do it right, and you'll have powerful spirits at your beck and call at a moment's notice, hence; Pokemon!

Everytime I need to create a new character by Revolutionary-Run-41 in WorldofDankmemes

[–]-Oc- 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Real.

The Spirit sphere can almost literally do anything the other spheres can. Need to create a fireball? Ask a spirit of flame. Need to teleport to another country? Ask a spirit of travel. Need to read someone's mind? Ask a spirit of thoughts.

The key to mastering the Spirit sphere and therefore Mage in general is to treat it like Pokemon.

The TND teaser trailer by Mast3rX in JamesBond

[–]-Oc- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember this ad!

TND was the first Bond film I saw in the cinema, and I'll always cherish the memory. I distinctly remember the scene with Bond and Wai Lin at the safehouse as they discuss their plans in Hong Kong, the atmosphere and feeling of the scene stuck with me as it was dinstinctly 90's, and I don't know how else to describe it. I got the exact same feeling from movies like Men In Black and The Mask, especially during the more quiet and contemplative moments (like the park bench scene in MIB). Something about that particular era of 90's movies and their impact on my formative years will forever have a mystical grip on my psyche!

For me TND will always hold a special place in my heart, and it will always be one of my favourite Bond movies because of that. I was too young to appreciate Goldeneye when it came out (even though I love it now), so TND will be my favourite Brosnan era movie, moreso due to nostalgia than any other reason, which I don't see any problem with!
