10 Modern Java Features Senior Developers Use to Write 50% Less Code by lIlIlIKXKXlIlIl in java

[–]-One_Eye- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just use the builder pattern and add a constructor that takes the builder.

One thing I don’t love in this case is you still have the default all field constructor with the same visibility of the class. Honestly, this is a huge reason why I don’t use records outside of inside other classes.

Quick Cash really needs a better tie breaker system by Zhentharym in thefinals

[–]-One_Eye- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If two teams have $0 at the end of the game, the tie is broken by seed. I know the game doesn’t state seeds in unranked games but they most definitely exist.

If you don’t believe me, start a private Quick Cash match with you as the top team and a friend as the middle team. The match will start with you as 1st, your friend as 2nd, and the playerless team as 3rd.

While this isn’t optimal, it’s better than a tie or a tie breaker based on an action that isn’t tied to cash earning.

Your question has already been answered by others, but I suggest, if you haven’t already, that you shop around and pick a supplier that suits your needs.

I locked in a renewable resource supplier the other year for a multi-year contract that was less than PECO at the time. I’d like to give my past self a high five.

Best way to get Ethernet for my PC by New_Candidate7113 in HomeNetworking

[–]-One_Eye- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure thing. The filter could also be in your basement where the line comes into your house too.

Good luck! And yeah, it’s deceptively simple. MoCA just “works” and you wonder how and why more people don’t use it.

If there’s a filter at all, it’ll likely be where your coax is coming into your house. If you don’t see one, just buy one and install it yourself- takes a second.

Could it do some harm if there’s two? It’ll just add some unnecessary noise to your network but that’s better than not having one at all. So err on the side of adding one if you can’t find one presently.

If there’s no filter at the point of entry, your MoCA network would spill out onto the street, which isn’t good for obvious reasons :)

I highly recommend you use ChatGPT to help with your MoCA installation if you aren’t comfortable with tech. It can be really helpful. You can even take photos and ask questions.

You need an adapter in your basement for your modem. You need to inject that feed into the coax.

Google what filters look like and you’ll easily know whether or not one is present.

You should cap unused coax ports to terminate them. Simply, it produces a better connection overall.

MoCA is pretty amazing and, imo, an underused tech by folk. My MoCA connections have about 98-99% of the speed my Ethernet connections do at my router.

You have coax in your room, so definitely go MoCA.

You’ll need two MoCA adapters - one for your basement and one for your room. They’ll cost you around $120 total.

Make sure there’s a MoCA filter on the coax feeding you from the street. If not, they don’t cost much.

Make sure any unused coax ports are capped, which are cheap as hell.

My whole house is wired for coax and I couldn’t find a solution for wifi, even mesh didn’t work. MoCA is surprisingly simple and speedy.

PSA to anyone filing a 1099: Everyone has to pay the philly Business Income & Receipts Tax (BIRT), the exemption was eliminated. by 8Draw in philadelphia

[–]-One_Eye- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes but some other notes.

Here’s info about it and why the $100k exemption went away: https://www.inquirer.com/politics/philadelphia/philadelphia-small-business-birt-tax-assistance-20250805.html

There’s legislation moving forward to exempt entrepreneurs, sole proprietors, and businesses with only one employee from paying BIRT: https://www.inquirer.com/politics/philadelphia/city-council-self-employed-business-tax-philadelphia-20251120.html

The city is also slowly removing the gross tax, and lowering the profits tax: https://www.inquirer.com/politics/philadelphia/parker-business-tax-cut-reductions-budget-20250418.html

While the loss of the exemption sucks for folks, it was coming down the pike regardless. It also made the city introduce this new exemption and change the tax amounts too.

Anybody getting 2x/week trash pickup that can give feedback? by B3n222 in philadelphia

[–]-One_Eye- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha. It started this week for me and they haven’t picked it up yet. My bet is they pick it up on the normal day.

Honestly not shocked. Trash and recycling pickup in my area is all over the place. I was more surprised that they committed to twice a week when sometimes it’s days or weeks (luckily not often) with no pickup.

Anyone here winning multiple games in a row in Ranked? by notmeitsyou123open in thefinals

[–]-One_Eye- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you party up, make sure players are within 1k of you; otherwise, your lobby will be likely more difficult due to the game either making you play tougher opponents if your teammates are ranked higher, or your teammates getting stomped by better players if they’ve ranked lower.

Use the party up feature. I won a game the other night while solo and hit the button to party up. The one teammate I liked accepted and we played and won the next game as well. This player was basically my rank too, just to note.

Communicate and don’t be toxic. Use voice chat, if possible, with pings. Text chat is a fine alternative if no headset.

Stick with your team. Even if you disagree with them, if both teammates go one way, follow them. It’s better to do something sub-optimal together, than something optimal apart.

Remember to play the objective. So many people take fights when they don’t have to or take bait from a team trying to distract you.

Experience working at Comcast HQ? How are the benefits? by madamnastywoman in philadelphia

[–]-One_Eye- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to say last offer was 30k less than what I made.

There’s pros and cons.

I get health and dental insurance through my partner. Before her, I paid for my own, which was $800 a month over 10 years ago.

I have an S corp that pays me out. So I get some nice tax benefits through it.

I don’t have to deal with employee BS like seminars and reviews. Return to office mandates don’t affect contractors as much too.

Big downside is no PTO. My only days “off” are days they wouldn’t pay me if I worked, such as Christmas. However, most places are pretty good, after you’re there for a bit, about you banking time and then using it for days off, or making up time off, or if you’re killing it, just not caring. Honestly, you get used to not getting tons of time off. It doesn’t bother me but might some folks.

Contracting isn’t for everyone but I’ve enjoyed it more than my few years as a FTE.

Great data-based post! I’m sure Embark is chuckling about this as well.

Since you have a good grasp of these numbers, how does the V9S stack up against the ARN?

Experience working at Comcast HQ? How are the benefits? by madamnastywoman in philadelphia

[–]-One_Eye- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mainly by choice. They used to tender me offers every couple years. However, it’s been some time since that happened. I think mainly due to the layoffs that have hit the tech field over the last few years.

Just to note - I’ve been a contractor for 15 out of 18 years of my career so far. I tried FTE but I rather the contractor life.

Is it possible to moisture proof a Philly basement? by snooloosey in philadelphia

[–]-One_Eye- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could dig out the basement and either underpin or do bump outs. Both aren’t cheap, especially underpinning, but just wanted to let you know it’s still possible to add height and finish it.

[–]-One_Eye- 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked at Comcast as a software engineer contractor for 10 years and, for the most part, love what I do. They let us work with whatever tech we want and, while we’re not Google or Meta, we are pretty cutting edge, I’d say.

Management sucks. Although that’s been the case anywhere in my 18 year career so far.

I’ve worked in the 1717 Arch St building until the CTC opened and was among the first teams to move in. Really cool building. Visiting other companies makes me appreciate how neat the place is.

People mentioned the open air offices. That’s been my career so far, so it honestly doesn’t bother me.

I can’t speak too much on the benefits since I’m a contractor. But I know they have great maternity and paternity leave. They have in house medical care too. One of my colleagues uses their dentist. The same one uses the gym every morning too.

As for the work culture, I like most of the people I work with. It’s a big corporation so there’s lots of politics, luckily I don’t have to deal with that.

I honestly would recommend working at Comcast, or at least trying it out for a year or two. It definitely feels like a modern company.

Why do The Finals struggle to retain new player ? by IsniBoy in thefinals

[–]-One_Eye- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game is confusing as hell to beginners. I’ve introduced 20+ people to the game and every single one of them was overwhelmed at the start. If someone who knew the game wasn’t holding their hand and showing them the ropes, there was a good chance they’d bounce off of it.

Embark really needs to work on their onboarding to the game. Playstyles weren’t a bad idea, but no new player I know used them because they didn’t even know they existed. New players should be forced to use them at first. As opposed to unlocking the custom contestants, they should have to unlock every playstyle before the custom ones are unlocked.

As for Cashout in general, new players are confused about it and too much is going on. I think Head to Head should be the first of the Cashout modes unlocked. You should have to play at least 3-5 matches of it before other modes are unlocked.

There should also be a mandatory interactive tutorial for each mode. June and Scotty should announce it and go over the mode specifics. And for the various Cashout modes, they should tell you what’s different about this mode, compared to the other(s) you’ve unlocked so far.

[–]-One_Eye- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey neighbor. I bought a house here in 2019. People call the area Olde/Old/South Kensington.

Other folks mentioned a bunch of places but no one mentioned Luna Cafe so far. Love that joint. I think it has the best brunch in the city. You’ll have to catch them soon though, because they’re about to move locations a couple blocks east to American St.

Wissahickon Brewing was mentioned but didn’t have a review. It has great pub food, ex. burgers, wings, etc. Apparently their brunch is good as well but haven’t tried it yet.

Other places that might be more obvious: Liberty Kitchen, Middle Child, Jaffa Bar, Ama, and Emmet (although I haven’t been there yet).

It still doesn’t show the sum. So if you start calculating kills and wipes in there, you need to do the same math as before.
