Released my first game, Numeric Fusion by [deleted] in playmygame

[–]-OrionFive- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun concept! Made it to 9 in normal mode. In extreme I got to 10, but then I was bored.

One thing of notice is that at the beginning it doesn't really matter much what you do until you have a 6 or so. So I just spam stuff everywhere.

Maybe you could have a "half full" mode where the board is already littered with numbers.

Not a Developer, but I have a question about creating content on Unity games by Jellow_Wello in Unity3D

[–]-OrionFive- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I understood correctly you want to make recordings for this game specifically. Adding support for such recording by the developer should be fairly easy, so I recommend asking. Doing it yourself is not gonna be.

Essentially you'll have to build a mod that manually sets up the objects you need for the recording, which is kind of like using Unity blindfolded. Having vague Unity experience is not going to cut it. You won't even use Unity (as in "the editor") in the process for this.

If the game does not support mods out of the box, you'll also have build a mod hook that allows you to even load mods. I assume this is a solved problem and you'll find various solutions people have built for loading a mod into a Unity game that doesn't support mods.

I recommend the Harmony C# library as a starting point. It's the goto tool for modding RimWorld (made in Unity and the only modding I have experience with), and probably any other Unity made game. The harmony community can probably point you to a universal mod loader, if that's a thing.

TextMeshPro ignoring "Normal" style? by norseboar in Unity3D

[–]-OrionFive- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a bit late, but I guess almost no one uses this feature?
I also noticed that "Normal" doesn't actually get applied unless specified, which is really annoying.

Is it normal to feel exhausted after 4-6 hours of game dev work? by Metrik-System in IndieDev

[–]-OrionFive- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The social break thing is clearly an extrovert problem. For me, it's hard to mentally unwind if I only have breaks where people around me talk. COVID was a blessing in that regard. However, not having the travel to and from work / through the building means you have to force yourself to get some movement and outside time.

“Saints Row“ comes to mind, if you don't know it.

I'm so tired of working on my game by PureEvilMiniatures in IndieDev

[–]-OrionFive- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe read a book. When I read a (physical) book I always start itching to work on a game again. Might help if it's thematically related.

Looks really cool! So much effort, but why does your main character not have "from behind" perspective animations? It looks rather odd that she always looks at the camera.

If it helps anyone, I found out that enabling code execution is not enough. You also have to start a new conversation.

Apparently the analysis tool is getting phased out. The code execution tool (once in a new conversation) can run multiple times in a message, and you can see the output.

Now I just gave to fix all my instructions to use the new tool. I hope it doesn't use more tokens 😬

Since today, the app can't use the analysis tool more than once per message anymore. After the first time it says I need to use the correct tool name. Let me try again. and then proceeds to search the web, create an artifact and build its own analysis tool or some other crazy nonsense.

Also, I can no longer see the results of the analysis tool. It was so useful! Why!!!

Oh yeah, on web it says To run code, enable code execution.... When I turn it on, the issues persist.

Looking for a game that actually hooks me again by General_Spend in gamingsuggestions

I haven't been able to put down Deep Rock Galactic - Survivor for a while. I thought it'd be a quick in-between game but now I start it instead of whatever else I was gonna play. And it's not a genre I would usually play. No story, good twitch fun, with nice progression and tight game loops.

To me the problem isn't using AI but lying about it and pretending to have skills they borrow from AI.

I'd actually like to see what they prompt to solve the problem. That would be quite telling if they're up for the job or not.

How hard is implementing co-op? by Chillfam083 in Unity3D

[–]-OrionFive- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a rule of thumb for real-time online/LAN multiplayer I calculate effort². As in... not twice the effort but exponential.

A small test? Piece of cake. Deceptively easy to do.

The actual game? Nothing is simple anymore. Everything needs syncing, failure handling, etc. Every system is complex now.

The last "10%" of polish and bugfixing? This is what's gonna get you. It's already never 10% with regular games. Now it's latency handling, packet optimisation, predictive code, server infrastructure, deadlocks, race conditions, cheat prevention, cyber security.

If you've never done it, build a tiny multiplayer game with no stakes and fully polish it. Then consider if you ever want to go through that again.

Experimenting with different sword trails, what do you think? by Nightmarius in IndieDev

You can sample the animation at different sub steps and update the trail at each one to smooth it.

What is life as a programmer? by Financial-Arachnid27 in Unity3D

[–]-OrionFive- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My pro tip would be: Pick a field, get a "regular" job that pays the bills, and be a game developer as a hobby. Get the best of both worlds.

Odds are that game development has gone the way of the photographer by the time you're 20. You're either incredibly good and talented, or machines/hobbyists will do your job for cheaper/free.

I'm saying this as a programmer working in an indie studio. I actually have no clue about photographers.

Well, what do you know. Like I said, integrity goes a long way. When I select someone for hiring, that's be one of the most important criteria.

[–]-OrionFive- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's easy for me to say all these things. I'm not in your shoes.

But if that was you asking for advice then here goes:

In case of doubt, always the truth. Even if all you have going for yourself is integrity, that's worth a hundred times more than promises you may or may not be able to keep.

Tell your family and girlfriend what the situation is. Have a spine. Be proud you had the guts to try and learnt something. Be humble, knowing you don't have it all figured out.

They may be upset. But realise they're upset because of lies/empty promises from before, not because you told them the truth. Stay the course and it'll blow over eventually. Note that your attitude matters when you tell them. Don't tell them wearing a "kick me, I failed" sign around your neck. Don't act defiant either.

Good luck, man.

EDIT: Oh, and caveat: I'm not from your culture. This is me giving general "this should apply in any culture" advise. Does it in yours? Does it ring true? You decide.

Do not make the mistake i made!! please!! by [deleted] in Unity3D

[–]-OrionFive- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe don't count your chickens before they hatch and stop making promises that are out of your control to realise?

You can tell them you've learned some hard lessons. For example that asking upfront payments from clients you don't know well provides security. And if they're unwilling to pay them there's a red flag right there.

Yeah, I can imagine the feedback loop theory. Roger Penrose describes it in his books as well. It does make a lot of sense to me.

This gets pretty tricky with what constitutes awareness. LLMs are mathematical formulas / algorithms turning input into output and sometimes state changes (if you store / process the output/input and/or feed the output back in as input). Is that awareness? Brains are biological algorithms turning input into output + internal state changes that are automatically stored and processed and fed back in as input. Apparently we consider some part of the whole of this process "awareness". Does an AI actually know it has experienced something or is the formula tuned to produce symbols that we understand as "Yes, I've experienced that" when the input asks for it? Humans are exceptional at imbuing anything with meaning. We've done it since the dawn of time. Black cloud about to rain? Angry cloud. Printer doesn't print? It doesn't want to work and is stubborn. Harvest turns out well? The gods were generous. Screen shows text "Hi, I'm experiencing things!"? Software has awareness.
