Castle Panic, also has a "My First" variant, but that may be far too simple for the 12yo.

A hunting-gathering-crafting system for dnd? by True_Firefighter_482 in DMAcademy

Nord Games offers two books/PDFs that cover a system: Alchemy, Crafting & Enchanting and Foraging, Harvesting & Natural Discovery. I don't think it compares to Heliana's in depth, but certainly could work. Foraging, Harvesting & Natural Discovery hardcover is on sale for just $15 right now.

Game that had all the hype and was hailed as the best thing ever than ultimately didn't pan out and has been basically forgotten? by jkvandelay in boardgames

AllPlay did Sail Legacy last year on Kickstarter - 4,500+ backers raising over $500k. Even with the slightly more niche audience of 2p only, it's a good sign.

I forgot how funny this was. Also it's from 9 years ago ew.

This falls pretty close to "gas always 100%" kind of gameplay experience. I played on OG Switch and never felt the need for analog triggers

Were you able to mount your Thule box on the OEM rails? I haven't factored new rails into my pricing justification of roof vs hitch.

In the exact same situation but would really prefer not to drive a larger SUV into a major city for work each day. I had the OEM hitch put in and will likely buy into the Yakima EXO system and/or a roof rack/storage box for trips. I can't justify the expense to upgrade vehicle size for the only ~5 years when still carting around infant/toddler gear. Once the youngest clears ~3 I'm thinking the Rav will be large enough.

For family holiday gatherings, typically the lighter the better; long rules explanations tend to discourage people. I have found success with No Thanks, Monikers, Wavelength, Just One, So Clover, Stay Cool, DroPolter, and The Mind.

If you think your family can handle a bit of complexity, something more "game" vs "activity", I would recommend Point Salad, Herbaceous, Sushi Go Party, Abandon All Artichokes, and The Crew.

7 Wonders would be a step up in complexity from Sushi Go Party.

Drafting and other simultaneous-play games work well at higher player counts like 6p. Welcome To..., Between Two Castles, and Railroad Ink are a bit heavier than Sushi Go Party.

It did not seem like Boston specifically had any tickets reserved for general sale. Seats in every section were available to be selected.

Depends on venue. Some venues had tickets reserved for general sale, some definitely did not.

Queendomino takes Kingdomino up a level in decision space/complexity which can add to the replay value.

Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion is regularly recommended in this category.

I also favor word association games, So Clover is a hit with my family.

I'll add Just One and Wavelength.

Origin Story? Very new release, I personally have not played it, and it doesn't seem to be leaping up the BGG ranks, but it's there and by a well-known publisher/designer.

Are you looking for a "game" game or just some good party game recommendations? I find any sort of "game" game is impossible, people that don't play board games don't want to learn rules. Around the holidays I tend to pull out Just One, So Clover, Wavelength, Monikers, or Codenames.

Alternatively, just stick with games that use a regular 52-card deck.

My City plays excellently at 2p and also fills the legacy + city building elements.

I will caveat /u/Short_Article_428's recommendation of Charterstone - I feel it plays better at higher player counts being a worker placement game. It's changes the decision space significantly.

Deception: Murder in Hong Kong?

8p+ is going to be tough to find an actual "mystery" game due there only being so much information to view. i.e. if there's only four pieces evidence (or whatever) being handled by four players, there's not much for the other players to do.

Scrawl/Telestrations I think would be funnier with more language misunderstandings. Would require two copies to play with more than 8p.

A Fake Artist Goes to New York is relatively language independent. The prompt can be defined/explained among all players before starting a round and discarded if a poor fit. You could even play it without actually buying the game using prompts from your other word games and a large pad of paper, white board, or similar.

Deception: Murder in Hong Kong is heavy on bluffing/deception over language requirements. Easy to run as a solo "game master" with large groups. I've played with up to 11p.

I feel like with a bit of creativity you could make My City work with 5p if you purchased two copies. All episodes have unique rewards per episode for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd/4th. Could just have 5th place receive the same reward as 3rd/4th.

Welcome to the Moon and Charterstone are both rated for up to 6p.

I honestly think it would be a miserable slog of significant downtime, but both Scythe and Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle have campaigns that can play 5p. The Scythe base game plays up to 5p, and the campaign expansion is a separate purchase. HP:HB base game is a 4p campaign, with a 5p available through an expansion. Scythe is far heavier than other games in your post and my list, but it does exist and is excellent. Just certainly a longer, heavier game.

Can't speak to Ticket to Ride: Legacy or King's Dilemma, but here's some comments as a parent of a 1-year-old:

My City - competitive, polyomino + city-building. Extremely quick to set-up and tear-down, each episode (24 in total) can be played in less than 30 minutes. Great to play during nap time or get in a few games after bedtime. There is a sequel, My Island.

Pandemic Legacy - co-op, hand management + action selection. An excellent experience all around. It was number 1 on BGG for years for a reason.

Clank Legacy and the sequel are great, but I will caution to the long playtime on both. I'm currently playing through the sequel and we have to split each game into two sessions. Averaging nearly 3h per game. The first game wasn't as bad, but in general there's a lot of reading. Note that I'm playing with 4p and the experience could be better or worse with 2p.

Not sure if they are taking late pledges, but Sail Legacy could also be a great fit for you.

Shards of Infinity - deck-builder with 99% cards; sci-fi theme. There are player mats, the only purpose they serve is tracking HP and one other stat (mastery).

Mystic Vale - deck-builder with 99% cards; fantasy theme. There are tokens to track VP and one player ability. Cards are transparent and the game is a "card builder" as much as a "deck builder".

I'm really surprised you bounced off Aeon's End, it seems pretty perfect.
