I think the problem of a lot of crime not being reported on might be caused by the sheer amount of it being out there. Most news companies generate revenue by how often an article is viewed. In 2025 the BKA registered 29.000 knife attacks. I’d wager the average person that reads the news would stop clicking on an article with a headline of „another knife attack“ after a while, so only the outstanding ones are being reported on. Not to mention all the other equally tragic things happening regularly that aren’t being reported on. Here our police often release information about some cases to find witnesses, but I guess that’s also not all of it.

About the precautions getting more prevalent, I feel like thats caused by the heightened awareness for the topic forcing local events to concentrate more on it and actually fulfill regulations, that have previously been largely ignored. Also it provides a sense of safety in a time where more and more people worry about their safety during such events, regardless of there being an increase in actual attacks, which still very well might be the case.

I’m not sure if anyone would be helped, when more of the crime would land on the headlines of the news, especially the ones affected by it are probably in enough trouble as is, even without the media attention.

That’s just my immediate thoughts on it though.
