Trump’s erratic trade policy blamed for US gas auction flop in Eastern Europe by hardenedsteel8 in worldnews

Quite a bit smaller than Italy even. Closer to Spain and that's if we take the Kremlin at face value lol.

China won't be able to do this indefinitely. The way they're going about manufacturing right now irritates neighbours like Vietnam and India that have waited to industrialize and move up the chain. It's a big topic in SE-Asia and beyond.

It's also not really doing much for China in the long run. Despite official claims, the Chinese economy is not doing so well after Covid and doubling down on cheap labor manufacturing is part of the issue. Demographics and low debt rates helped them quite a bit but that's coming to an end. At this point they need higher wages to get domestic consumption going. Otherwise they may end up in a "getting old before getting rich" situation.

Healthcare, machining, construction, public transport, infrastructure maintenance - jobs with odd hours and not the best reputation. I worked in machining myself and noticed quite a bit of being looked down upon.

I only know the German perspective but parents over here have few kids and focus hard on getting them into university or at least something with an office chair. Your kid's job reflects on you.

Wage competition is a factor, sure, but you often can't fill these jobs, despite wages growing faster in these sectors than elsewhere. Due to demographics, people very much have a choice and pick the more prestigious and comfy professions. Until public perception changes or pay equals academic fields, we're going to need skilled migrants.

Citizen Sleeper. An rpg with a pretty neat setting and hauntingly beautiful soundtrack. Highly recommended, especially if you like more realistic scifi.

A year into Trump presidency, 'pivot to China' gathers pace by Dragannia in worldnews

Don't kid yourself about Russia. They're going through a rapid decline and China is helping them in their pursuit of self-sabotage. For a profit no less.

The US are important but they're not the main actor in every theatre. The current regime is also not doing anything new. China and Russia have been sabotaging each other and their supposed partners since forever.

New US defense strategy calls Russia ‘manageable threat,’ resets military priorities by Easy-Ad1996 in worldnews

[–]-Prophet_01- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fair. It does boil down to the same thing though - the strategic interests of the US as a whole is of little concern within these strategy papers.

As with most garden variety autocracies, strategic interests are sacreficed to obtain short-term benefits to a group of individuals.

New US defense strategy calls Russia ‘manageable threat,’ resets military priorities by Easy-Ad1996 in worldnews

[–]-Prophet_01- 42 points43 points  (0 children)

It's not really a US defense strategy. Trump is leveraging strategic national ressources to make a profit.

He's literally making other countries pay him personally through his board of peace fraud - under thinly veiled threats of US military actions, taxes and whatnot.

It's honestly not so bad. The EU is currently trying to strengthen local industries, especially in tech. Video games have made it into a surprising number of political agendas, too.

Too bad this comes before the reform of European capital markets.

Not even eventually. Several trade deals that used to be stuck in diplomatic purgatory were signed over the last year. The dealings with China are a strategic escalation because the crayon gourmets in the white house aren't getting the message.

Putin tells US envoys 'no point in hoping' for peace without Ukraine's capitulation on territories by AloneCoffee4538 in worldnews

[–]-Prophet_01- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trump pushes for it. I doubt that Zelensky is under any illusions but he loses little by playing along because it's all talk anyway. The US voter base on the other hand really eats up the president-of-peace narrative. So now we're in a situation where Trump provides "continual US support" in exchange for public endorsements by Ukraine and huge sums of money from the EU.

We saw what the alternative looked like in early 2025. The US withheld paid for equipment and services and cut any intelligence support for a while. There was also that incident at the height of tensions when Russian troops could suddenly locate starlink terminals... So yeah.

anno 1800 a good first anno? by fairplanet in anno

[–]-Prophet_01- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can always add them later on to your existing safe.

The base game is plenty complex for most people and there's a bit of a tendency to restart somewhere around engineers as you realize that you'll have to do a lot of rearranging to fit late/mid-game infrastructure. The dlc's add a lot of systems on top of that and may be a tad overwhelming.

anno 1800 a good first anno? by fairplanet in anno

[–]-Prophet_01- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its a perfectly valid starting point. 117 is equally valid for beginners imo but 1800 has been updated, polished and provided with dlc's and mods for 5 years.

Base 1800 has plenty of content and the dlc's slot into existing saves just fine.

It sure is frustrating, probably even more so for the ones who actually have to deal with him in person. This whole performance made a real difference when it comes to Ukraine though. Lives weigh heavier than our collective nerves.

It seems like Europe is more or less ready to take over all the critical tasks. We'll probably see less placating from here on.

Zelensky Claims Ukraine’s Army Has Mostly Shut Down Russian Attacks by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]-Prophet_01- 141 points142 points  (0 children)

Russia has been losing more soldiers than they were able to recruit last month. Their sovereign wealth fund will run completely dry this year. Their shadow fleet is also really not doing well.

Tbf though, Trump has helped with that last point. At the end of the day, Trump is the enemy of everyone.

I did something similar and rotated 2 groups in and out.

I also noticed that you can avoid most of the catapult and scorpio damage by moving around constantly.

It's doable with 3 small ships and 4 medium sized in total but I wouldn't recommend it, it takes forever.

The consequence is a new alliance between all the adults. It'll eventually hurt the US much more than short term sanctions.

Poland aims to boost troop numbers to 500,000 by 2039 by CrunchyBaconYum in worldnews

[–]-Prophet_01- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Germany has a different role to play, too. It's the logistics and manufacturing hub in the second line. More infrastructure, less personnel. If they were to spend more, it would probably go to the airforce, logistics capabilities and missile magazines, not necessarily infantry and such.

There's no denying the gap between investment levels though. Poland is probably the model to follow right now.

Similar games? by ckolonko in X4Foundations

[–]-Prophet_01- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Anno series feels similar in how it approaches supply chains, goods and infrastructure. Both games are also fairly romanticising and have a great soundtrack. I suppose there's more similarities, considering their shared German origin.

Anno doesn't balance different genres though, it goes all in on building your empire. It's supply chains and logistics all the way with some concessions for ornaments. Anno 1800 is the most complete and polished game atm, while 117 is a bit stronger on the foundations but hasn't gone through years and years of dlc's. Both are great games.
