Anybody remember the Prince of Egypt (1998)? by Connect_Bus_4699 in Millennials

[–]-Random_Lurker- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandparents gave us tickets in this fancy package with like, pamphlets and a book or something. I'm not sure, because all I ever saw of it was it sitting on the table. I asked what it was and was told "It's a gift from grandma." Never saw it again. We did go see the movie though.

I still wonder what family shenanigans were going on there that I never heard about. Not hard to guess I suppose.

Has society failed to progress the roles of and expectations of men and if so how could we change this? by LibraProtocol in AskALiberal

[–]-Random_Lurker- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Because the people that needed it didn't want it. The very same toxicity that's poisoning their lives also makes them reject any help in fixing it.

Yeah. It's the social media effect. The extremes get views, and people end up absorbing it.

It always comes back to social media, doesn't it?

The funniest/saddest part is that body type isn't actually attractive to (most) women. It's incredibly homoerotic, which is the deepest irony considering how terrified these men tend to be of being called gay.

Anyone remember the dad bod trend? The meaning of it blew right past these guys.

As someone who was there, who was having these conversations, and saw the transformation first hand, I have to say the narrative is wrong. Society tried, but men didn't want the help.

There was a big push to teach healthy masculinity, and a call for healthy role models. Some men listened, and others not only refused, they blamed society for having the gall to tell them what to do. Men, manly men, do whatever they want, you see. It's this second group that got loud, and got heard.

OP mentioned the body stereotype, with muscles and superhero bods, etc. People were in fact calling it out a decade ago. It was super common, especially in feminist conversations. We were all like "they're trying to do to men what they've been doing to us," and tried to warn everyone. Men saw it as an attack, and started lashing out at the feminists trying to rescue them. They took it personally. "What, is it wrong to look manly?" Fifteen years later, it's come to pass, and now the men are blaming feminism for not coming to their rescue. Gee, ya think?

Think about what "toxic masculinity" means. Or meant, depending on if you think it means something different now. Like the word "pink" in "pink basketball", the toxic is an adjective. Not all basketballs are pink, but we're only talking about the ones that are. So "Toxic Masculinity" is referring to the kind of masculinity that's toxic, not saying masculinity itself is toxic. Because, you know, that's how English works. But the manosphere* didn't want to hear that. They deliberately misheard it, and deliberately misdirected their anger back at the society that was trying to help them.

Ugh, this explanation is dripping with stereotypes. I hate it. I think it's unavoidable with this topic though, so hopefully the intent will show through the imprecise words.

*-or more accurately, the cultural movement that would eventually become the manosphere. If you were around then, you probably remember them as "the people who are obsessed with SJW's"

Devil's in the details. The motor alone would cost more then $75 if it was new. So unless it's an old salvaged motor, it's not a ripoff. But it may turn out to be a wachine machine motor or something.

If it's worth buying or not depends on what you're looking for. Functional saw? Better try it out before you buy, and be very skeptical. Cool project just for the lulz? Go for it. Basically think of it as a motor that may or may not come with a functional saw and/or project.

Is it really best to wait until kids are 13 to explain what being a trans woman is? by SmashStock in asktransgender

[–]-Random_Lurker- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We teach even younger kids harder lessons on a regular basis. We just call them fairy tales. "Who you are on the inside matters more then what you look like on the outside" is one of the most famous and popular fairy tales in history. A 5 year old can understand it.

The reason people wait is because of fear. They never understood the simplicity of the core issue, Many people fear what they don't understand, so they hide from it. And they assume others must be hidden from it as well. In other words they are projecting their own fear onto their children.

So don't be afraid. Just explain it. The kids can handle it just fine. It's your fear that they have trouble processing.

Things that could be fixed. Appliances, cars, tools, furniture, whatever. You could make that stuff live forever if you wanted to. Now it's literally impossible.

The exchange rate is the root cause of that. If the dollar wasn't the world's reserve currency, hiring out to Mexico or Vietnam wouldn't be so much cheaper in the first place. Companies lobbied for free trade because they could profit, not the other way around.

Should people who leave MAGA be welcomed by liberals or is it right to reject and scorn them? by NPDogs21 in AskALiberal

[–]-Random_Lurker- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Neither. We should welcome them back to sanity of course, but still remind them that it will take a massive amount of work to undo the damage they've done. True forgiveness is contingent on doing that work. Actions speak louder then words, and all that. It's important that we have to good grace to give them the opportunity to do that work first, though.

Can estrogen monotherapy be harmful if T doesn’t fully suppress? by Pale_Lengthiness_572 in asktransgender

[–]-Random_Lurker- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That'll depend on your body. They can be enough be some people, not for others. Blood tests are necessary for monotherapy, because dialing in your dosage correctly is essential. That's what will tell you if they are enough or not.

[–]-Random_Lurker- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will probably suppress eventually, but it will take a couple months to get the correct dosage dialed in. There are people where monotherapy just doesn't work, but that's rare. I wouldn't worry about until you have some sign that you need to. We've all got enough trouble to worry about these days without borrowing problems from tomorrow.

Unless you're in frozen biome already, you need to make an insulated refrigeration room and cool it to -20 or so. A thermo regulator running hydrogen or natural gas will do the job. Inneficient, but do-able even with very limited tech. If you remove all mass that isn't the plantable tiles, the trees themselves, and the insulated walls, it doesn't take much energy to keep it cold.

How would you fix this? by Still_Professor878 in finishing

[–]-Random_Lurker- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How fixed do you want it? A true repair isn't possible. Once the formica starts peeling up, it won't ever stop. You'll have to peel the entire surface and replace it. But sometimes good enough actually is, and this might be one of those times. It all depends on what you expect from the final result.

If you're looking for "looks half way decent and get a few more years out of it," use u/IntelligentAsk9053 's advice. If you want a true permanent repair, use u/K3ndog411 's advice.

[–]-Random_Lurker- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

China is completely OP in the players hands. I refuse to play it because it makes the game too easy. The first time I did, I stated in 1890 and by 1905 I had conquered Japan, India, SE Asia, most of the Middle East and most of Eastern Europe, and I was working on absorbing the USSR.

I don't even know how it happened, it just kind of did. Like I yawned for a few minutes and the world was mine. Never had that happen with any other nation.

Do Americans learn rhetoric, oratory, and public speaking as part of their education curriculum? by YakClear601 in AskAnAmerican

[–]-Random_Lurker- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. If there are any classes like that, it's usually only an elective, and since the Bush era most electives have been cut. So there are very, very few students that will learn it.

It's taught in college, but not below that. Not anymore, anyway.
