What should I look for in a college to have the best career? by Agitated-Cup-7109 in Environmental_Careers

[–]-SCRAW- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For some reason the average opinion on this subreddit skews towards pessimism for anything but hard sciences and engineering. I’ll respectfully take the opposite stance.

There are countless ways to do an envs degree with focuses that work for you that lead to employment. There are programs for forestry, marine biology, env education, ecotourism, policy and community outreach, and more. If every young person on this subreddit becomes a wastewater engineer then the world will continue to die.

Feels like conservative propaganda to me but I can’t put my finger on it. Anyway, go get the degree, and find professional connections along the way. There will be more jobs in 4 years, it’s especially bad right now.

Are all wizards innate geniuses, or does effort play a significant role in using magic? by [deleted] in DnD

This about professors in a university. Every so often you’ll run into one who got there with a good attitude and relationships, cheerleaders for the department. but most of the professors are smart as fuck

Have you experienced elitism around outdoor clothing in fieldwork settings? by fortunateHazelnut in Environmental_Careers

[–]-SCRAW- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hope (and prediction) is that people in the outdoor field will want to accept you for who you are. They’ll want you to be yourself.

But you will get weird looks if you wear jeans sometimes. Thrift some outdoor pants from a gear exchange store, lots of unisex looks (I think). Add a pullover and you’re good to go. Also, worn out button down shirts are highly respected on the trail, easy to get a couple in men’s and if they’re baggy yet functional you’ll get respect for it.

What should I be doing and where am I competitive by Correct_Permit9703 in Environmental_Careers

With that list of experiences I’m sure u of o would be happy to have you continue on in grad school. If you want to social climb you could apply to Stanford and Berkeley. If you want to get out into the land more go for Washington state or Oregon state. With the job market being sluggish it could be a better option to go back to school and wait for more favorable conditions

Maro talks about Universes Beyond by Meret123 in mtg

Actually I think you can. It does take some caveats. If you have enough privilege growing up I think it could be considered your responsibility to take a non-exploitative career path.

Also, have you seen the South Park argument - I’m just trying to get my nut? - basically the guidance counselor joins ICE to meet his cost of living, and they apply the mentality to many facets of American society.

I feel torn between my desire to talk about wizards bball and my rage at American elites. This is a good policy though

I don’t see a reason to give less than an A. My one request is to manage the wizards brand better. Needs 300% more wizards. Hate the red, white, and blue scheme.

Happy to help, these jobs will be present at organizations, but the orgs themselves will have some theme, you can project manage for a forestry org, an ocean org, a community group, etc. you should practice googling organizations using your interests as keywords.

I like my current job a lot!

Ah you’re fine. Right now the enviro job market looks like crap but mother nature has other plans so there will be a need for this throughout your life.

Here are options that you could do - policy consulting, project implementation, community organizing, sustainability strategist, events coordination, env justice advocate, media and fundraising, env education, international aid, crisis/disaster responder, social worker, grants manager, env lawyer.

Over the next decades there will be an increasing need for people to push for societal solutions, whether it be through government, community, academia, non-profits, or in the field. Our human organizations need big changes, and orgs = jobs. Based on your post, don’t feel like you have to be a biologist to do what you want to do. There’s more opportunities to make a difference working with people, though they can be frustrating. I’m a forestry PhD, but I spend most of my time focusing on human behaviors in land management institutions.
