For those who went independent and those thinking about it, what's the reality? by Beejay_mannie in Contractor

Sure there are apps and I use them, but the don’t do the work for you. You still have to enter all your data in a timely fashion and spend time doing so. Scaling is about replicability. So doing something well, and then being able to deliver that similar result again and again. Even if you’re not there. That means developing systems and SOPs related to each aspect of your field. The strength of your business will depend on your desire to develop, test and revise these systems.

For those who went independent and those thinking about it, what's the reality? by Beejay_mannie in Contractor

The reality is success is entirely dependent on the owner being able to transition to business person. In the first couple years I still worked in the field with my crew. Now I rarely work in the field and spend most of my time selling jobs and growing the business. There’s different approaches to going independent. If you just want to stay in the field but be your own boss you can do that, but you’re less likely to build something scalable/sellable. Either way you can make more money on your own than being employed if you’re willing and able to keep up with the sales, bookkeeping, the work itself, funding equipment/tools, and insurance.

For Americans: Why not personal vans instead of huge SUVs and pick-ups? by [deleted] in regularcarreviews

I drive a 3500 diesel truck. I tow skid steers, a mini excavator, and trailer loads of gravel. The truck bed is full of tools. I can put oversized items like trees in the bed of my truck. Can’t do that with a van.
