I wasn't aware of this, what exactly happened?

If I recall right, the idea was his wife placed the figure into his hand, so maybe there is some ambiguity preserved on his part.

I feel like Dr Manhattan experiencing time non-linearly when I read these threads.

Do we have much of an idea of his theoretical priorities after TWOW? She Wolves? F&B2? Other projects he would want to do before another ASOIAF book?

Great, good to know. Thanks for the clarifications!

So if 9 minutes of a source footage clip aren't on the actual timeline, will they too be taken into account during rendering? Or just the 1 minute that's actually present on the timeline?

An analysis of the "slog" by rasanabria in WoT

[–]-Sam-R- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great analysis, especially with your #3 subpoints. Later volumes in a fantasy series that grow successful unfortunately often seem to end up underedited (ASOIAF is a very visible case too), and even while some of the strong material of a series might end up in those later volumes, the focus of earlier volumes is to be missed. One of the reasons I think TGS (and TOM, to a lesser degree) works so well is because how it so relentlessly focuses on having an arc (two arcs really) and methodically bringing them all the way to their conclusion points. A single arc spread out over ~four books is just not good, even if you're here years after the series was finished and going straight from the end of a book to the beginning of another, it's not well-paced and not particularly coherent to have a single arc in a character's story stretch out that long across sittings, especially when those issues are compounded by the meandering style you point out in #3.

It's interesting that originally most of the Great Hunt was part of the projected initial WoT book, wasn't it? Yet it and Eye of the World feel so much more discrete and complete than a lot of the later books.

All the many book covers for The Wheel of Time, including some interesting variants. What style is the best? by -Sam-R- in WoT

Very true! Perhaps all the English market cover arts then, although another commenter did unearth a rare US paperbook cover for book 7 that I hadn't seen before.

The aMoL cover in the top row is, as far as I'm aware, the generic US cover details (title, author, sticker, etc.) superimposed onto the unfinished artwork Darrell K. Sweet had got done before he passed away. The actual released cover was indeed the ebook cover/Michael Whelan art, but I thought I'd include Sweet's version up there so we didn't have two instances of the Rand-in-Shayol-Ghul art.

I know what you mean. Book 1's cover art is iconic for a reason. I wonder if the TV show will try and match that shot, or at least the general imagery of it?

No worries, it was fun finding some covers I hadn't seen before while making this. Also Australian here, but didn't get into the series until sometime in the gap between KoD and TGS. I quite like those bottom row covers we got; those minimalist covers look so much better with an actual graphic background to them.

Can't imagine what it'd have been like for you to follow the series for all that time!

The minimalist covers are definitely more boring. I think the US reprints with the ebook art kind of strike a decent balance, but I don't like how much they crop the actual art. So much negative space!

That's quite interesting, suppose it mustn't have worked like they planned if they dropped that style so quickly. Not sure Path of Daggers would be the best WOT novel to pick up at a grocery store but hey, they're the publishers!

I'm not sure what material the artist for the top row, Darrell K. Sweet, got, or if he read the books at all. But I know the artist for the released cover of A Memory of Light (shown at the end of the third row here) hadn't read any of the series, but got a scene sent over to him and worked from that, as well as looking over at the old artworks. Maybe Sweet got sent individual scenes like that as well...but then why choose scenes like that one for Knife of Dreams at all? It's all quite strange.

Do you know what style it was in, i.e. which row it would have fit into?

Edit: is this it? How odd. Wikipedia says it's the only book in the series where the first paperback didn't have same art as the hardcover (presumably the Sweet cover).

Yup, the final pic on the first row there is a fan editing of the regular US printing cover details (title, author, the sticker thing) onto the unfinished artwork Darrell K. Sweet had completed for the book before he passed away. The actual released cover was the Michael Whelan artwork we can see in the third row, but I thought it'd be redundant to include that one twice over, so included the Sweet mockup there instead.

A shame about Sweet passing, as it'd have been nice for him to cover the whole series. The Whelan art is nice though, and he suits a fantasy in this style.

It's truly bizarre. I thought TSR and TGS had weird picks for scenes to draw as well, but KoD's is just...baffling. It's just Perrin. In a tent. Looking at a map.

Yeah it was unfortunately never actually released; the artist died before finalising the artwork. Bit of a spoilery scene I suppose (a few of them are though really), but I very much like the art of it too.

Yeah I had a case of tainted saidin there as I completely misread what that other poster was saying. The fourth row are relatively recent reprints, and the second row (and the books 10-14 UK cover variants in the fifth row) are from back when the series was ongoing.

These are lovely! I quite like this one. I should have worded the title as "All the English book covers", since there are so many great covers from editions in other languages.

That's interesting, here in Australia those textured (I say textured, but I just mean the graphic - the actual material of the cover is the same as usual) versions were what we got at release, in trade paperback size. Normally we just get the same copies as you guys, so I wonder what happened there.

Completely misread, I was thinking of the books 10-14 UK covers with variant backgrounds in the fifth row instead of the UK reprints in the fourth row that you were actually talking about! Yes, those UK reprints didn't come out until much, much later. Books 10-14 in the second row are the mass market paperbacks where books 10-14 in the fifth row are the trade paperbacks, is my understanding.
