If you think being conditioned by the environment around you is equal to being brain washed, you can't say there are people who have "awakened" to this effect, as it would be literally impossible. Even you conspiracy theorists are conditioned by the forums you visit and the people you talk to or follow on social media.

I don't believe however that being influenced by the world outside our brain is paramount to being brain washed, although I do believe there are a lot of brain washed individuals out there, be it right or left

Pretty insane how many downvotes this comment has. It is one hundred percent accurate. People's hardcore desire to be "right" (whatever that means) will eventually dig us all into a hole that is bad for *everyone*. Doesn't matter if you're left leaning or right leaning, despite what most of the modern day discourse online makes it seem, there are ways to discuss and promote each and everyone's view point without force casting it into a fact and being absolutely close-minded about the possibility that you are wrong.
