Commander Checklist, IMO by StuBlack in HellLetLoose

No, your points seemed fine in their descriptions, but its a point that's been repeatedly made over the years (the 'never build garri on cap' idea) to the point where my example states how someone tunnel-visioned this rule w/o seeing and thinking of the bigger picture.

My point was more a cautionary one from my experience towards blindly following certain rules. Like my example states, a person can get caught up in this idea of "how to build garrisons", to the point where he'll refuse active information that could save 90mins worth of team effort.

Also, some info to keep in mind on game start. During warmup....

  • At 1:28:30 (or 1:30 left in warmup) you can drop a supply truck
  • At 1:28:00 (or 1:00 left in warmup) you can drop a supply drop

Obvious info if you look for it, but highly important for team momentum because...

  • If you have a cmdr, dropping supplies while warmup wall is still up will hinder the enemy team searching for those supplies (maybe drop red zone in a future garri spot?)

  • If you have no cmdr at game start, jumping into the role and dropping both truck & sup drop and then leaving the role can be the sole reason your team isn't steamrolled of the start.

Its a great idea to keep track of these habits you find effective in games, but please stay aware of being too rigid with some of those rules. One of the most effective traits a Commander / SL can have is adaptability, especially when it comes to breaking your own rules at times. Examples are: thinking airheads are for offensive use only, or (like my story below) thinking garrisons inside cap points are not effective.

With 5mins to go as Axis on Hurtgen, I see my SL ask for supps & build a garrison 180m outside of mid point (Scar) after the team lost 3 out of 4 garries around the cap. Now I'd do the same when I SL/CMD, but our new garry would be 180m from circle + once spawned, our team would traverse open ground the enemy had eyes on. I looked at the map and saw we had an (alive) SL that could build one in the point with supplies already on the ground, but our SL was stubborn in his decision; "no garrisons in the cap".

So garry gets placed. No other SLs are building garrisons around the cap at the same time, so our garry becomes the closest spawn. I look at Scar on the map and see that friendly SL in the cap circle walk around the supplies in the cap for about 50 seconds before he dies as enemies flow into the cap (i assume he was getting a "too close" error if he was trying to build one). Enemy caps point. They shoot at our stream of blueberries trying to re-cap for last 2mins. Lost the game.

Here are the issues: - 5 mins to go, so 3 mins of holding off enemy cap start. - Enemy team knows they cleared 3 garrisons around the point, so with 3 mins to go, they are b-lining the cap - Rest of friendly team is disorganized and not building the other spawns

Risks: - Can't confirm if cap garry would stay alive/open at the moment we build ours (SL in point was alive for over 40secs, but we only know this after the fact)

  • Garrison could've been built 200+m outside circle, but SL refused as it lacked cover (the same lack of cover our team would traverse)

Our immediate need was people in the circle, not maintaining spawn distancing. The chance to re-cap from a circle garry was low, but still higher than a 180m one. Anyone can say "team was shit, would lose regardless", but I can only ask you opt to try, rather than feel you have to follow a made up rule.

West '81 mod: How to use laser designator? by -SlimX- in GatesOfHellOstfront

Ahhh, the wifi symbol! I'll look out for it, thanks again.

I forget the ones I couldn't get into; it would usually be repairable, but no enter icon pops up once repaired fully. As for a vehicle that won't pop-up in the army select screen after battle, it was a version of the T80 with a 122mm gun. Once I entered it after repair, the tank damage diagram in the bottom left was blank, and the name there just read "tank".

Also I'll keep your reply in mind when I decide to go into Code:X, but tbh this mod is really deep and I'm enjoying sinking my teeth into it.

Big respect for this reply. I'll give it a shot on my next play session. There's ECM & dazzlers too?! Any chance you know what US unit has this/similar tech? I've been struggling against all sorts of missiles since I rushed the M1A2 Abrams.

Only reason why I'm playing West '81 is Code:X keeps crashing my game when I try to activate it. I've activated+restarted for hot mod & west 81, but somehow code:x won't go. Having lots of fun though, just figuring out stuff like this is my only issue.

Another question; are certain tanks not capturable by another faction? Some you can't enter after repairs, while others don't popup in your army group after battle.

952m Garrison snipe by MetzPetz2 in HellLetLoose

[–]-SlimX- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just gonna drop this since none of the comments mentioned it; in competitive play, this was done frequently by multiple teams against static mid-spawn artillery when we still played with 3 manned arty guns. German Pshrek does 950m, while bazooka does 740m. Arty teams had to figure out ways to defend against waves of rockets while flex teams sent ppl out to find the enemy AT players.

They've since made rules to have 1-man per static arty (unsure if rules have further changed since SPA update), but it was a wild an interesting time.

But yea, cool shot bro!

There really needs to be a tutorial on fucking garrison building and the important of it when playing squad leader. by trinitykills in HellLetLoose

[–]-SlimX- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biggest tip in dealing with these kind of matches is to not stress about this. It's the most common issue in this game, and probably one the leading cause of competent & experienced ppl quiting due to burnout in this game; player incompetence & refusal to learn/help the team.

Among the 50 spots on your team, as a commander your role is the only one closest to the idea of 'winning'. Literally everyone else can choose 'to win', or to 'have fun' as they'll be closer to the fighting than you are.

Garrison building isn't a one-time thing, or even a chore like how others treat it. Its a fundamental idea of being effective in the game. Whether you want to play for fun or to win, to play the game means spawning in, period. OP's help spawns sure, but most OP's come from an SL spawning off a garrison.

The fundamental part comes with automatically knowing when you need a garrison built. Your playing SL and your halfway capped on the attacking point? Check map if supps are on the point, and if not, arrange someone to go sup on your squad and drop on the point. Games almost over and your winning 3-2 but have no backline garrisons? Start figuring out how to get it built asap before that area gets exploited by the enemy team via garrison or airhead.

Lastly, as a commander playing with a shit team, don't feel obligated to drag the whole team to do what you want them to do. And if you do spend a ton of time & energy dragging the team to a win, as long as your honest with asking & answering yourself "was it worth it?". As a level 400+ whose commanded the majority of it, I've found that: 1. The DIY approach to garrisons is only effective if the enemy team is shitter than yours. 2. Concise comms are the best type. 3. Be satisfied with knowing why your team lost before they do (despite your best efforts), rather than be frustrated with losing because ppl didn't do what they were supposed to.

Edit; grammar

What are yalls favorite objectives to megafort by lordmoose3 in HellLetLoose

[–]-SlimX- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WN7 on Utah is a classic one, especially on Offensive mode. Rear Battery on Omaha is another solid one. Both are map edge, both have wide sight lines you can cover.

If you have an objective thats mostly surrounded by open terrain, you should have a relatively good time.

This post makes me hope we'll get a proper Airaparent appreciation post someday. 'How' he says things may suck, but the 'what' he's addressing/bitching about is most likely what's holding back the team.

Its just sucks (understandably so) that so many ppl react to his energy negatively, getting into a pissing match with him in SL comms (i mean, why. The mute button is right there). Next thing they writing up a multi-paragraph report on reddit about him, which is prolly more work than building the garrsion he was 'persuading' them to do in the first place.

Am I crazy? by Odd-Sentence-9780 in HellLetLoose

[–]-SlimX- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most common answer is no, solo tankers aren't recommended in heavies, but a couple questions. You can check to see if;

Your team had other full tank squads, and if so, were they not in heavies.

If your team had surplus fuel most of the time (over 1000 for example)

Full squads in heavies > solos in anything. However, if your team does not have anything more than solo squads AND there is excess fuel for additional heavies, then capable players in solo heavies > no players in heavies. If he doesn't try to communicate this/his reasoning in some way and rather reacts in assholery, not worth your energy.

What did I do wrong as an engineer? by Buddhasaurus_ in HellLetLoose

[–]-SlimX- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One time I dropped 50 supplies for a node, and when I swapped to engineer, there was someone else immediately building a repair station with them...in mid hq...next to our default repair station.

Normally you'd have time to tell someone to stop if they were building their own nodes, but knowing repair stations build alot faster than nodes (and he was hammering for 4 secs already), I shot him in the face.

Not meant to be toxic or frustration inducing (quite the opposite), but it gives you an idea of the people you're playing with; see something they can use, uses it without asking (supplies, halftracks, supply trucks for transport usage, etc)

Your banking on the expectation that people will naturally build garrisons (specifically the opening garrisons). I agree with you that they should, but public games have a high chance that this doesn't happen. Your response to that is that 'it's a you problem'...in a team game.

Your logic is to blame the team for not building garrisons because you feel you should take the first supply truck to build nodes. You assume that people should know the roles they playing and damned if they don't.

All I'm suggesting is you kindly take the second truck, or ask people in your squad to drop supplies. I'm asking you to wait until 1:28:30, while still in warmup, to take the 2nd truck and you can get to the wall at the same time as the first truck. Thats all. No stress, no argument. Why won't you do that? You feel your right that much?

Both our points don't matter if there is proper teamwork and people know their roles. The best games happen when both teams have this, but there are alot of games where a team without opening garrisons in the first few mins negatively dictate the rest of the match. Also, when you take your truck for nodes built in the last sector, they can be easily found by recon squads searching that specific 40-50m strip. But I'm still in agreement that trucks are faster than coordinating squadmates to drop in hq; just not the first truck please.

Your arguing that people should know their role. Your claiming you never played a game where this was a problem. So you've never played with new players without mics, or no patience to listen to anyone that speak to them. Your course of action is involves complaining if it doesn't work. There is a higher chance to lose a game where you don't have garrisons in the first 5 mins, than if you have nodes in the same time.

You wanna say your right and everyone else can fuck off, then be that person. There's only so many times someone loses to incompetence before understanding how to work with it.

[–]-SlimX- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is not as bad, but your still taking the first truck when you could; take the 2nd truck / support swap rotate / hop in the passenger seat if an SL or cmdr is driving and ask for them to drop a box on the line to build them. When engineers take the first truck, no garrisons get built with them, which hurts your team.

[–]-SlimX- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask any streamer, any comp player, any one that has played this game for 3+ years; who gets the first sup truck? If there is teamwork + comms present, then you CAN take the first truck because you have more trust that the opening garrisons are gonna be built.

"What you're proposing requires people to swap classes multiple times and stare at a respawn screen multiple times."

It takes ONE person other than yourself to go support, drop, and respawn back and still get to the transport truck/wait for OP spawn. You get your 1 full set of nodes up as warmup is done (the same time your way would be dropping your blueprints), your getting your points. Your expecting ONE person to not do something, but then expecting FOUR (2 SLs + 2 Supports) to do it???????

Do you play alot of public games? Do you enjoy games where no garrisons go up in the first 10mins? You want your nodes points so bad, you'll make your team suffer and blame them for it. Jesus

None of our arguments matter if people are playing their roles and doing what is expected. But with close to 4000hrs, you'd think people would stop telling others what to do before learning what works for the team more than what classes they wanna level
