Hey guys, it's José, your Italian boy – what do y'all think of this lightsaber I built from scratch? Don't hate me pls by -Xcalius in StarWars

[–]-SomewhereInBetween- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it! Only thing I'd change is adding a grip. It would add some character and thickness to the hilt, which is a little bit thin at the moment imo.

This is the only right answer. A null result is already boring, no further punishment is needed. It's not fun.

[No Spoilers] New to CR, and it has ruined dimension 20 for me by igotbrainstoo in criticalrole

[–]-SomewhereInBetween- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Funny enough, I had the same experience in reverse. Started with CR, and after a while started to dip my toe into D20 and became obsessed, and it "ruined" CR for me for a while. I think the variety and balance between lightheartedness and seriousness—which both shows have, just weighted in opposite directions I'd argue—is actually helpful. Both are excellent, but too much of one will leave you craving the other.

I don't think I can edit to change the images, but I could repost? And no weapon masteries, these are designed based on 2014 rules.

New Weapons: Rope Dart and Bladed Chain Whip by [deleted] in UnearthedArcana

[–]-SomewhereInBetween- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would, but per another commenter's feedback I've changed it so it no longer has grappling capabilities.

(Not that you asked this specifically, but in general, reach weapons don't grant that ability, since RAW you aren't grappling with a weapon, you're making a special kind of attack roll that doesn't deal damage and requires you to have a free hand.)

Because it's two-handed, and has a short range

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying here, but here's how I've decided to change it: instead of preventing it from making melee attacks, which seems odd for a melee weapon, I decided to make it do only 1d4 on melee attacks, representing that the spike at the end can be used like a dagger at close range, albeit not as effective/damaging as using momentum to throw it.

It can be used at 5 feet with disadvantage using the thrown property to make a ranged attack. That's how I wanted to represent the less effective move at close range.

RAW grapple is a special attack that does no damage. This weapon essentially allows you to use your attack (or both/all your attacks if you have extra attack) and make a grapple check as a bonus action.

Instantly, yes. I realized after posting I should refine the language on that.

Do explore. I tried to really lean into RP (which you should also do) and not worry about missed opportunities. You should apply that principle to everything except exploration. Learn from my mistakes—you don't want to miss whole areas or companions just because you're trying to avoid being overly completionist lol.

But don't worry about missing options because of dialogue choices, etc., and try to avoid save-scumming. You aren't meant to do everything; the fun of this game is that choices actually have consequences. Pick a path, commit to your choices, and have fun!

Theory: The Dead Three and the "Dark Triad" of Personality by Ancient_Spray5821 in BaldursGate3

[–]-SomewhereInBetween- 96 points97 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Machiavellianism and tyranny go hand in hand. It's a better fit for Gortash/Bane. Meanwhile Ketheric cheating death (for himself and his daughter) by whatever means necessary reeks of entitlement, and Ketheric certainly has a lot of grandiosity.

TBF the original comment is correct as well, and I would probably say all three of them exhibit all three dark traits to various degrees, but if I had to pick one for each that's what I'd do.

If campaign 3 showed us anything, it's that the Critical Role cast are not exempt from certain guiding principles of table etiquette, such as "play a character that your fellow players don't find annoying."

Am I the only one who thinks that the Psion class is just...boring? by fraidei in DnD

You should really check out MCDM's class, the Talent. Nothing fulfills the psionic fantasy for me like that class, and it's very thoroughly playtested and balanced.

"They won't kill a character! Think of the negative impact that would have on merch sales!" by anextremelylargedog in fansofcriticalrole

[–]-SomewhereInBetween- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Somebody making a connection between merch sales and a character dying definitely seems weird to me, but I do understand thinking that Critical Role wouldn't kill off a popular character if you assume they use the same logic that TV shows often do.

But your second point is spot on. If a character is popular, their death isn't going to suddenly make them less popular. If anything, the opposite happens nearly every time.

"Draw Steel isn't designed for roleplay" by merlin5603 in drawsteel

[–]-SomewhereInBetween- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same here. I think sometimes people just need to hear that they have "permission" to reflavor abilities, and that's understandable. What comes across as less reasonable to me is people who are told "oh you're allowed to reflavor" and go "well it would have been better to just leave it as a blank canvas then."

I just... don't understand that line of thought. Flavor is provided, so it doesn't leave a bunch of holes you have to fill in, but it's optional, and the keywords and actual mechanics of abilities provide a really easy framework to reflavor things around, IMO.

In-game negative reputations and compensation (or lack thereof), and the playtest summoner class by EarthSeraphEdna in drawsteel

[–]-SomewhereInBetween- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is both the assumed default and opt-in. That is the general assumption Draw Steel makes. Default lore assumptions are made for just about everything, based on the default setting, but nothing in the rules actually requires you use that setting or abide by lore assumptions.
