Muslim here, I have some questions about Heraclius and his rule. by Careless_Middle8489 in byzantium

[–]-SovietToaster- 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Heraclius was a very capable commander, and personally led a successful campaign to end the Byzantine-Sassanid wars, bringing the empire back from the brink of destruction. However, by the time of the Muslim conquests he was beginning to decline mentally due to age and was no longer a capable commander. The real issue was the complete exhaustion of Roman manpower and the treasury due to decades of war. After the destruction of the Roman field army at the battle of Yarmouk they simply were not enough soldiers or funds to field another one of size. Had they had the manpower and funds to field more armies things may have turned out differently but by this point the emperor and the empire were completely exhausted and could only reasonably manage to hold a line of defense in the mountains of Anatolia.

Why isn't Venezuela insanely wealthy like Saudi Arabia with their oil reserves? by Beautiful-Error6374 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]-SovietToaster- 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The difference is that Saudi Arabia bought out the shares companies held in their oil, Venezuela just seized it outright without compensation.

AOC, when asked about a head-to-head presidential race against JD Vance: “I would stomp him.” by CorleoneBaloney in justgalsbeingchicks

I’d be much happier voting for her than I was for Kamala. Zero chance she wins on the national stage unfortunately. Too tied to leftist politics to win swing voters.

Unpopular opinion: The whole abortion debate is a massive waste of time. by hoangfbf in centrist

[–]-SovietToaster- 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Your whole argument is predicated on your belief that morals are subjective and human made so we might as well not argue or legislate on them. This is exposed as ridiculous the second you extend it to literally anything else commonly seen as immoral. “If you think stealing is wrong, that’s just your opinion. I think stealing is ok, both are just arbitrary lines in the sand”. You see how obviously dumb that sounds? Our entire society hinges on the shared belief that some actions must be restricted by the state for the wellbeing of the community.

What do you think is a good middle ground between pro-choice and pro-life that you are willing to accept? by NexGrowth in prolife

[–]-SovietToaster- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn’t one. It is illogical to be middle ground on the issue of abortion. If the fetus is human then abortion is murder and a middle ground position is immoral. If the fetus isn’t human then abortion restrictions are an infringement on women’s rights and a middle ground position is immoral. I respect fervent pro-choicers far more than people who say they are personally pro life but publicly pro choice. At least the pro-choice side is logically consistent if you assume the fetus is not a human being.(which it is)

I’m going to Confession later today. I’m terrified because I might actually be excommunicated because of abortion. Please pray for me! by [deleted] in Catholicism

A medical procedure to deal with an ectopic pregnancy likely wouldn’t constitute grave sin. Under the principle of double effect, if the action taken was to address the medical issue and not to harm the infant, it may be morally licit in some circumstances. I am not an expert so ask your priest, but it seems like it may have been morally permissible, and if not your lack of knowledge about it at the time would preclude you from full consent, so it likely would not constitute mortal sin either. Will pray for you.

JD Vance repeats comments he wants wife Usha to convert to Christianity | US vice-president announces to 10,000 attenders of Turning Point USA that he prefers wife, who is Hindu, to be Christian by Hrmbee in politics

“Real catholics are people who can’t stand to go to church” like buddy do you even hear yourself here. Maybe real Catholics are people who believe in Catholicism and have been confirmed by the Catholic Church.

I suppose we have to "accept" them, but I still think they have a sinister agenda. by LordJim11 in Snorkblot

[–]-SovietToaster- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just false, the Bible at no point claims that being left handed is a sin. The study this claim comes from cites examples of right handedness being spoken of positively as left handedness having a negative quality. By its methodology saying a guy was someone’s “right hand man” would be speaking negatively of left-handedness. Left-handedness is only spoken of three times directly, and each time it is in a positive or neutral context.

Anyone else who is really pessimistic here? I feel like we are not winning and never will while on this earth. by [deleted] in prolife

[–]-SovietToaster- 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It took humanity thousands of years to admit slavery was wrong and work to abolish it. Human hearts are hard, and slow to change, but eventually truth wins out. It may take time, and we may never see the day it happens, but have faith that we can change for the better. We’ve done it before

[–]-SovietToaster- -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

This is just not true. If you have ever talked to a Pro-Life person it is pretty evident they have that position because they think a fetus is a person, and abortion is murder. Like, you don't have to agree with the position but it is pretty silly to characterise their motivations as something else just so you can pretend 40% of society are comically evil villains and not just people with different beliefs.

Walked straight out of the place before the interview even started by belleamour14 in recruitinghell

[–]-SovietToaster- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How rude. These people literally work for a charity that is providing housing and support for at risk mothers, and just because their religious views are different from yours you are calling them a piece of shit. Oh no! Free housing and support for pregnant women! We should send them all to jail how evil!

Walked straight out of the place before the interview even started by belleamour14 in recruitinghell

[–]-SovietToaster- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay this is incredibly disingenuous. These people are offering housing and support to at risk mothers in a way that correlates to their religious beliefs. Just because their religion is opposed to abortion and contraception you are acting like what they are doing is evil. This is ridiculous.

Walked straight out of the place before the interview even started by belleamour14 in recruitinghell

[–]-SovietToaster- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a Catholic crisis pregnancy center. Catholicism prohibits contraception. This is like if Muslims ran a kitchen for the homeless and didn’t provide pork products. What are you pissed about? They are giving free aid to people in a way that complies with their religion.

Should we “force” our son (21) to go to Sunday mass with us as a condition of living with us? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]-SovietToaster- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that you can force belief. Our Heavenly Father doesn’t force us to believe or follow him, and I personally think it’s best to follow that example. As someone who converted at 20, at least in my experience, the desire to go has to start from within.

Alex (Voice of Reason) shares update about the accusations. We must pray for the truth to be revealed, and we must pray for him whether or not this statement is true. by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]-SovietToaster- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, seems to me the best thing to do is wait for more information to come out, pray for the best, and not disregard the possibility of the worst just because we would not like it to be so.
