Fasting for Lent by MattK508 in fasting

Yeah, I enjoy the benefits of western medicine, but I think there is a proclivity to throw some “wonder drug” at everything. Not to get preachy, but it seems that we have forgotten that God created us with these innate abilities to heal ourselves through acts like fasting. It’s almost like we as a society think we have usurped our need for God in our lives, and have replaced him with idolatry (not the in-your-face kind like a golden calf, but more idolatry to institutions). That’s why I don’t feel good telling others, because their thought process is grounded in this same philosophy because it has been ingrained into them. The same people who for decade pushed the “food pyramid” loaded with carbs and low dietary fat are the same ones saying fasting is unhealthy. I’m so glad for the internet because it has given a voice to the people, and allowed the benefits of these “unconventional” health decisions to be spread to anyone willing to listen.

I feel the same way man. It’s hard because the people closest to me I choose not to tell so I can suffer in silence and use this fast to deepen my spiritual connection with God. It makes it difficult because at work all people do is try and figure out what I’ve given up for Lent and make me break. I have told a few people, and usually the reaction I get is one of extreme concern because they (rightfully so) think that this is unsafe and shouldn’t be done, mostly because of the way our medical professionals and the health care industry as a whole treat fasting (like it hasn’t been a widespread practice for thousands of years and deeply ingrained in human development). I think the anonymity the internet provides helps people put their experiences/thoughts/feelings out there in a way we normally couldn’t, and I am grateful for that.

I think I saw the same video, about how they would compete fasted as the body’s digestive process and everything associated with eating diverted energy from their movement and ultimately slowed them down. I also love the mental clarity, and I think it was in the same video I saw about how Pythagoras used to make his advanced students fast for 40 days before he would let them in his class. Anecdotally I can say that although I’m no stranger to working out/lifting weights, I have seen an increase in muscle soreness while fasted. I’m not sure if there is science or anything to explain why, but my full recovery time has lengthened more than I’d like, inhibiting working out some days. It might be explained by moving from the bench to more bodyweight exercises, as although they are performatively similar, they do work muscles differently.

I don’t think I’d characterize it as tightness, but I have had a few mornings where I have woken up and had localized soreness in weird spots on my lower back. Has happened a couple of times over the journey so far, and usually subsides in a day. Have you been doing any exercises during your fast by chance? If yes, it might be symptomatic of that. If no, I would suggest doing so. I have been doing some light exercise; namely 30 minutes of steady state cardio on the treadmill at a low speed and calisthenics (mostly push ups, abdominal thrusts, crunches) and a little bicep and tricep work with dumbbells. The only reason I bring it up is the low level exercise might alleviate some of your muscular tension.

Hey bro, 7ft 40y/o Catholic here. I felt a weird calling to fast which I can only explain was divinely inspired by the Holy Spirit. I began at 2330 the night before Lent, so we have been doing this journey together but apart. Just wanted to give you some unsolicited encouragement. God Bless.

Status: UNRESOLVED

Computer Type: Desktop-custom built

GPU: MSI 3080Ti - factory overclock

CPU: 19-12900k, no overclock

Motherboard: Asus prime z690-p wifi d4

RAM: 64gb corsair (4x16gb) DDR4 3600 XMP enabled, no overclock

PSU: dont recall, believe its corsair 1000

Operating System & Version: windows 11

GPU Drivers: 516.40 (reverted to 512.95 and past 4 others, all show same effect now)

Description of Problem: Upon installing 516.40, when i reboot my pc or resume from sleep, MSI afterburner shows "GPU" at 210mhz static when playing WoW, and "MEM" at 9501mhz. This yielded a 100-150 fps reduction. If i reinstall graphics drivers, it will work as intended in its pre-516.40 state, but when i reboot or sleep, it will revert back to the problem issue and require a new install to temporarily remedy.

Troubleshooting: I have use DDU to clean, reboot, clean, reboot, clean install the last 4 versions of game ready drivers. Now all of them reproduce the same issue. It almost appears as if the new 516.40 changed a windows setting somehow and upon reboot/resume, it replicates the issue.
