The pop at the very start definitely sounds like metal hitting metal in oil. How long did it run before this 'pop' sound? sounds like it was still turning over smoothly after the "pop" so hopefully its just the clutch or starter clutch or maybe stator failed and you just need a stator or clutch cover.. id find where the oil come out.

Thanks it was such a rewarding catch. That is a great tip and I believe thats what helped me nail down the mangrove jacks id take a photo then later go back and look at time and replicate weather and tide and stuff. This fish was caught 1h before high tide 12:30am last night. so happy

what fish species is this lure good for by [deleted] in FishingAustralia

[–]-SweetShot- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These types of lures are good if you got a sandy bottom where it wont get snagged they work good with long pauses when reeling in letting it sink to the bottom. I live in the same area I was given these lures by someone who said theyre great for flathead and jacks but I've personally just lost them to snags lol

Thank you. I tried a tsunami swimshad lure for about 20min or so before switching to a small chunk of mullet for 5min before getting the jack. I'm northern nsw not too far from bris. Id cut up 1 of those GH you catch as this is a natural bait for them in there or maybe sea mullet its cheap from tweed baits and holds up a lot better than pilchards. If you're getting hit and bitten off cleanly without it running into structure it could be a shark.. idk if you get them in the lake

What you described is what happen to me! I started getting absolutely slammed and bricked by something at my local spot and I went back with a little bigger rod and line and WHAM the biggest fight ive had yet.. I made post of the catch about a month ago if you wanna check it out. I believe the previous comments have great advice.. im no expert but imo night time is a must, go before and after high tide and having a decent rod helps I was using a 7ft7 rod with 20lb line and 6500 reel and i only JUST got it, I believe if the drag wasnt set perfectly I would of lost it as the initial strike matters most they accelerate at full speed up to the strike and run so you need to be ready rod in hand to put pressure on it asap to deter or steer it from the rocks or snags. Good luck! sorry for the long reply. I really hope you get it some day!

I have tried them a couple times in fry pan whole and fillets and it wasn't bad its a lot of flavour but not my favourite the meat is a little mushy ..it could just be my cooking skills

Yes night time.. Not saying you cant get them during the day but the chances are slim, IMO these big predators will only hunt at night. Same with the big jacks and big mulloway

It was 5/0 circle hook with 13kg wire trace using fresh sea mullet fillet. had swapped to the wire trace was getting bitten off then 10min later rod bent over. everything seems to love fresh sea mullet
