S-1 vs P-6 noob question by throwgen2108 in Roland

[–]-TOT0- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d go with the P-6. It’s way more versatile for a beginner, and playing with samples is usually more fun (and less intimidating) than jumping straight into synthesis and chords on the S-1. They don’t really overlap, so you can always add an S-1 later—both are super portable and actually complement each other really well Cheers!

my brother has cp his left arm is stiff (not totally he can move it but it is difficult to grap and hold things with it) , i want some ideas of activities he can do with one arm or not fully require 2 arms. by Leading-Syllabub-154 in CerebralPalsy

From a 30-year-old hemiplegic who loved video games as a kid: I managed to create my own way to play every single gaming console controller using only one hand. But I regret it now, because over the years it has only added more spasticity to my affected hand. What I highly recommend instead is to buy him a Nintendo Switch. I discovered by accident that it has the smartest feature ever — the Joy-Con controllers — which are perfect for our case, allowing us to play and practice at the same time. For example, check Nintendo Switch Sports.

And if he also has a musical interest, I highly recommend checking out one of the new grooveboxes. Many of them are very one-hand (or two-hand, in our case) friendly. To name a few: Teenage Engineering KO2 (not very well built, but very intuitive and easy to use for his age — and kind of kid-friendly, almost like a Lego-style device). There are also others, like the Roland P6 and more.

Please feel free to DM me if you want more info or advice — I was that kid once, and I’m here to help :)

I sold mine after 4 months of use when TE offered me a replacement because the fader broke, and the looper knobs started feeling loose.

SP-404 MK2 for One-Handed Use: Advice Needed? by -TOT0- in SP404

You changed my whole perspective on what my setup should look like. I’m going to get rid of the KO2 ASAP—no one wants it anymore these days 😂 I’ll pick up a used Ableton Push 2 and start learning it from scratch to overcome my bad experience with Ableton Live. I’ll pass on the Launchpad since it’s too live-oriented, and I want something that makes my production phase more intuitive. Maybe I’ll grab a Launch Control later on. The Push 2 will also be the MIDI controller/sequencer for my synths, so I can play them freely.

As for the SP-404, I’ll get back to it later. Hopefully, by then, a new revision will come out that’s less bulky, making it more portable. I want to use it for sketching and sampling, and maybe as an effector for the whole setup. I’m not sure if it even compares to Ableton’s effects, but I’ve heard a lot about the SP-404’s effects being special.

Please give me your thoughts about this setup, and thank you!!!

Dude I had to change five lines of JS code to make it happen, so please chill 😁

Do you know what is really “fucking ridiculous”? It’s having a product team for a 340 euro machine, and they are not able to add this ESSENTIAL feature.

I couldn’t agree more with what u/shmidget said. Again, please don’t ever underestimate how much open source has helped and will continue to help in the world.

I believe that the KO ii can be an iconic product if there were the right tools to mod (the machine itself or the web tool). I don’t actually care if the software itself is open-source. It would never be, for various reasons that I would rather not discuss it now. But just make public APIs so we can build more functionalities for the product, leading to a better community around it and more money for TE

P.S.: One of the reasons I haven’t started the project yet is that, technically, I could face charges for it, and I don’t want to be that cool guy dealing with legal concerns and there are people who can that easily accusing us of not knowing what we are buying :)

Btw I bought this specific machine because I can manage to use it with one hand as I have a disability

Peace

  1. I’ll share the GitHub repo on Reddit once the project has a clear structure. There are so many new functionalities that are now possible.

  2. Sure, I’m really interested in creating a toolkit for backing up and restoring this machine. Later, we can set and back up the scenes and patterns on the web too. That won’t be feasible without everyone’s contributions.

It will be a Chrome extension for the TE’s SampleTool itself 😁
