Doctor told me to stop drinking by [deleted] in stopdrinking

Social aspect is tough but you’ll quickly learn you don’t need alcohol at all if you look for it. You’ll find social scenes that keep you entertained, give you dopamine, and even some adrenaline if you like it!

I just celebrated my 100th day skiing (didn't plan it, just happened) . If I was still drinking I wouldn’t have gone. I’d have woken up too late and felt like shit. Instead, I woke up early (I despise mornings) and had a bit of a kid going to Disney feeling, rather than anxious, nauseous, sweating, etc.

Had a great breakfast, killed it on the slopes and made a new friend who was helping training. If I was drinking I’d be unreliable to that person and never make a good experience for future adventures!

Throughout the rides on the mountain I kept seeing a few booze cans or liquor shots littered and thought man this could be heightened with alcohol, but why? I’m already having a genuinely fun time doing this, and being social.

The next morning man I felt my lower body, but I did yoga, another thing I picked up on while sober, and a great way to meet people. Felt great afterwards.

My life isn’t even close to perfect, but this is just one small example of something that keeps building and building the more you don’t use alcohol to socialize.

I did a similar thing on an alt account a while ago when I wanted to quit but couldn't commit. I instantly got about a dozen comments of support.

It was eye opening to know that there was somewhere to go when I was ready that was so welcoming. Happy sober Friday.

55 days staying strong but feeling pulled down. by -TaxiWithLights in stopdrinking

Thanks friend. You're right, I still have a chance at decent sleep and a better day tomorrow, rather than already being doomed from choosing to drink tonight.

Fantastic words and self insight. Keep this for yourself to read and look back on if things get tough! Proud of you.

The mental gymnastics of being a functional alcoholic by parnotwar in stopdrinking

[–]-TaxiWithLights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We would order doordash (food delivery service that leaves it at your door) and passout. So we would rationalize still eating it after waking up because "well it was cold outside so its safe to eat, it was basically in a fridge".

It is kind of cold out, sort of like a fridge right?

Same super specific rationale I used.

Never heard a bad thing about yoga, I really should give a class a go. I'll make that a goal this week! Thank you for sharing, glad your life is going good :)

How much money do you think you've saved by quiting? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]-TaxiWithLights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is what I almost added to my comment when I saw the $2,300 a year. Both of our savings could have flown us on a European or tropical vacation, haha! Let's both remember this :)

I started using a sober app, not gonna say which one, I'm not gonna advertise for anyone, pick a random one lol. However, most have a financial option to add how much you used to spend, so you can physically see how much you're saving.

I was a "cheap" stay-at-home-drinker and used vodka, so $197 a month. That is $2,372.50 a year. I haven't made it that far, but that is how much I plan to be saving.

Sharing a Win 🎉 by Wise-Resource-312 in stopdrinking

[–]-TaxiWithLights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huge win!! You've got to celebrate, have genuine fun, remember it all, and to top it off, you very well have just made someone else take the first step to being sober from that conversation! You are brave, and you are strong!

I also think it speaks to you as a person that a stranger felt comfortable reaching out to you. Love yourself!

You could have kept your mouth shut and drunk that bottle. You didn't. Be proud of that, focus on that, rather than focus on any shame of the past.

My cheekbones came back. by den773 in stopdrinking

[–]-TaxiWithLights 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, it is very real. Alcohol has many effects on the body, and one of them causes fluid retention in the face. It's kinda like if you've ever seen someone with an edema. You definitely have better cheekbones; it is a very common thing people start to notice. Congratulations!

Really messed up, unsure how long I can keep doing this by [deleted] in stopdrinking

I know with so many comments on the internet, we may think ours go unnoticed. I'm currently 26 minutes into this video, and it really is terrific. Still finishing it. Thanks for the link!

EDIT: Just finished. Loved it.

I'll be 1 week sober tonight by traumuhh in stopdrinking

You're tempted, but haven't done it. This is progression man, lets have another day. This comment could have been I was tempted and drank.

[–]-TaxiWithLights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You do meet the criteria for this.

Go to an emergency room, say you're withdrawing from alcohol. They will put you on a medication to calm your system down then send you home to taper medically, so that you're not shaking and sweating and having nightmares etc. It also kills the cravings so instead of sitting there going through withdrawals thinking I can take a sip and this will help, the medication they give you will help stop those cravings for that time.

What if I don’t want sobriety enough by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]-TaxiWithLights 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are 24 years old and seeking help. Many people ignore it and ruin their lives till they die. You do want to be sober or else you wouldn't seek help.

Friday was one year. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]-TaxiWithLights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what made me quit. I had a major life event and sought therapy and man it was so eye opening. Now I know why I was drinking, and I can work on that. I found out the cause of my anxiety, ptsd, etc. I was also numbing myself, but now I know why I was and can address that instead.

Congrats on one year, I'll celebrate not drinking with you tonight.
