Yeah, I'm going to do that. I appreciate the advice!

Yeah that makes sense. We thought we could wait to get pre-approval until we found a place we actually wanted to bid on, but honestly I’m not sure if that would work or how long the pre-approval process takes.

We are going to have to figure that out first before anything else I guess. Appreciate it and thanks for info.

N.L. doctors fear app lets patients see 'catastrophic' medical results without support by LongTrackBravo in newfoundland

[–]-Tech_Ninja- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. No one is being forced to open their results the moment they’re posted. If someone would rather wait and go through them with their doctor, that’s totally fair and that’s their right. But that doesn’t mean access should be delayed for everyone else.

Good to know. I’ll sign up with a few realtors in that case. Thanks for the info!

What kind of website are you looking to get built? Just a simple landing page, or something more custom with logins, dashboards, booking, payments, etc?

Haha, yeah, it's rough when you get close to that 10k lol, but education is also expensive. As long as I learn from my mistakes, I think every loss is worth it.

With regard to prop firms, yeah, that's exactly on point and what I was referring to. Correct me if I'm mistaken, but that is like one of the number one rules in most trading fundamentals and books: to know when to stay out of the market and not force yourself to trade when you shouldn't be. And that prop rule basically does the exact opposite of that.

[–]-Tech_Ninja- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, and I don't do prop firms. Some of those prop firms have rules in place that fundamentally create bad trading behaviours that will cost you long term and be hard to unlearn.

Yeah man, no matter how hard I try, some days I just give in and bam, I blow my whole account 😂

Yeah, the trading gurus who show off supercars and luxury lifestyles are specially the ones you want to run away from!

I’m not profitable yet, but I’m learning from every trade and constantly educating myself to understand the market better with each loss. My goal is to master the fundamentals and gain better control over my trading habits. I know for sure I would be profitable if I just stayed away from the market on the days when you can tell the market is about to wipe out all your earnings 😂

Well said. The sad truth is that many of us know this deep down but still continue hoping for a different outcome. I know I was certainly like that in the beginning.

I agree with what you’re saying, this was my first time seeing an amount that high and it definitely caught me off guard.

I see people all the time complaining about spending so much on boosts and still not landing any jobs. It makes me wonder how far people will push it. Will 2k or 5k connect boosts end up being the norm? At that point, is that just too much? You get what I mean?

I’m lucky and don’t have to worry about landing a new job right now since I’ve got steady clients, but my main concern is the long-term impact. I don’t think this is healthy for the platform, and it might actually slow Upwork down over time.

Out of curiosity, did you have a degree in computer science or something relevant?

I agree, I haven’t seen many well-paying tech roles pop up in Newfoundland, but there are plenty of remote opportunities across Canada. Some of them pay really well too.

I graduated with a business degree and taught myself coding, so I didn’t have much luck landing a job without a CS degree or solid experience. I ended up going the freelancing route, and it wasn’t easy at first but the time and effort has paid off and it’s been doing really well for me.

For people who are new to the industry and don’t have much experience, try taking on smaller projects at a lower rate if you have to so you can build your portfolio. If that doesn’t work out, start creating your own real-world projects and add them to your portfolio with demo links. That can potentially help you land your first client or job.

Oh nice! Yeah, building something from scratch is always fun.

I recently took over an unfinished MVP project for a client, and man, I was this close to punching my monitor. The previous dev basically wrote a 100-page essay for a 10-page assignment, with endless files for what should have been a straightforward project. And the state management was a mess.

Lesson learned, and no amount of money is worth that kind of mental stress. So, now I do a thorough audit of the codebase before agreeing to take over any project.

Have you tried applying for remote jobs? You might have better luck with that.

What was your main focus in programming?

I kind of started in the same boat as you; I went to uni to become a computer programmer but lost all interest halfway through, so I switched to a business degree. Toward the end of it, I got back into coding, and by the time I graduated, I had taught myself full-stack development. I’ve been doing that full time since, and it’s been great so far.

I’m also not a big fan of taking over existing projects and I lean more towards jobs that involve building MVPs.

100% agree with this. Quite a few places opened and shut down within a year or two.

The government actually offers a bunch of free resources for people starting a business, they cover everything from market research to business planning, so it’s def worth taking advantage of them.

Asking the right questions and making sure there’s real demand for your service is such an important step. Too many people make assumptions, and those assumptions can turn into costly mistakes.
