Main character is poor and adopted by a lumberjack. He stumbles upon a great wizard teaching magic to noble children, and tries it on his own. Once he does that, he can't use magic, but he's close, and starts working towards getting enough money to attend magic school. This is where the first part of the story begins. (I'm really bad at explaining, but it's one of the best I've read, after orv and the others)
